I keep getting this problem when restarting the computer. After restart all of the non-application icons on the desktop are gone.  Also, it seems whatever passwords were stored in browsers are also gone.

Even more annoying is that now I cannot even open DPI with Knowbrainer or by itself.

My files are reorganized.

In order to get up and running again I need to return to a restore point.

There is nothing in update history of a recent Windows update.

It's killing productivity.

Any ideas?

Thank you.  (I have hand typed this message)

Our best unqualified guess is that your Windows OS is corrupted. Even in a healthy OS, it's not unusual for Windows System Restore to fail. In our opinion, you should probably outsource this problem to a computer consultant who does this for a living...or your 12-year-old nephew

Funny thing--the father of the very next patient after I sent in the problem is a computer consultant.  He helped set up system scan and check disk which found some corrupted files and fixed them.

Restarted without the problem. May do a System Reset if problem recurs.

Thanks for the advice.

Would suggest that you create a Restore Point now if things are working now. Would use the command prompt to do intermittent scans to look for and repair corrupted files. One needs to do this running as an Administrator using (right click/Run As Administrator).. Type in:  SFC /SCANNOW   then press enter. If still does work well, type in:  DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth   then press enter. This usually solves most ills. System Resore is a crap shoot--sometimes works well, sometimes fails. Creating a Restore Point after successful fixes is important.

MDH:

Thanks. Exactly right.  I ran SCANNOW and it found and fixed corrupt files.  That seems to have solved the problem.

Good point about making a good restore point.  I will do that now.

Thank you
