I need to buy a new computer because of some hardware issues. I'm currently running Windows 10 on a HP laptop with Intel core i7 (8th generation) and 16gb of RAM. Dragon runs okay on my current system, but it does crash fairly frequently and also has some specific performance issues (e.g. it runs extremely slowly whenever dealing with a window that has long numbers, for instance in Windows Explorer if there are files with names that are 5+ digits).
My question is, how much of a performance improvement would I be likely to see in Dragon if I upgrade to i8 or i9 processors? Or to 32gb or 64gb of RAM? Or to a desktop instead of a laptop?
And how well does Dragon function on Windows 11? |

You may not need a new computer. An i7 with 16 Gb of RAM is very decent. It might be something as simple as performing an FDSK and reinstalling everything. You would have to do the same thing with a new computer but an FDSK might just save you the price of a new computer. We haven't been running Windows 11 long enough to run many tests but Dragon was typically crashing once a day on our Windows 10 64 Gb i9-10980XE 18 core gaming monster. It hasn't crashed on Windows 11 yet but it's only been 2 days. FDSKing and reinstalling everything is a royal pain in the keister but if you think your computer has a few more years left, you can save some coins which you may need after your anti-VAX relatives nail you with COVID-19. Of course if you stay home you can pass on COVID-19/travel expenses and the usual political prison food fight… or is that just us ------------------------- Change "No" to "Know" w/KnowBrainer 2022 |

Lunis,
Many thanks indeed for this helpful (and relatable!) response. Yes this sounds like it's worth pursuing. Just to clarify, does performing an FDSK essentially just mean wiping the computer and doing a clean install of Windows, or does it refer to something more sophisticated that I'm ignorant of?? Also, where's the best place to get hold of an installer for Dragon for the reinstall? I purchased Dragon years ago and I've no idea what I've done with the original installation file! |

FDSK is a polite sledgehammer term for wiping your computer.
We offer Ver. 15.61 which is a lifetime download w/Installation/User Guide of Ver. 15.3, Ver. 15.61 and Ver. 15.7.1 (when or if it is released), details on fixing 28 sandtraps and other perks. Note that because of the complexity involved, we are charging a $20 service fee ------------------------- Change "No" to "Know" w/KnowBrainer 2022 |
