Hi, I would like to enable the numeric keypad to substitute for the mouse, and have made the changes in the control panel accordingly. However, I am unable to test it as I don't have a numbers lock key on my Dell keyboard. I also don't have a function key. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to turn numbers lock on and off, please? Thank you. |

What key is above the 7? Our keyboards says Clear/Padlock which is Num Lock On/Off on our Logi Apple (universal) keyboard. The following keys should be /, * and -. ------------------------- Change "No" to "Know" w/KnowBrainer 2022 |

Hi, Lunis, Thank you for your reply. On my keyboard above the 7, the key says "Clear", but there is nothing further, no word or sign for "padlock". Will this still function as a numbers lock key? Thanks. Regards, Katherine. |

It would be faster to test than wait for response but we suspect the Clear key doubles as your Num Locks key

The "Clear" button doesn't seem to make any difference. Do I have to also disable the mouse that I am currently using, or should the numeric keypad keys take over if they are enabled by the Clear key? Thank you.

Windows 10 has an on-screen keyboard app. Can you use that?

Hi, Tom,
Thanks for your suggestion. I was able to bring up the on-screen keyboard but it does not have a numbers lock key. If it did, would using that numbers lock key correspond to the real keyboard and enable the mouse functions on the real keyboard?
Thanks, Katherine. |

Maybe. You could try the following:
Another option would be to use a key mapper. ------------------------- Turbocharge your Dragon productivity with 40+ Power Addons |

Hi,
I was finally able to see your whole post, thank you.
I tried enabling the actual numeric keypad using the on-screen keyboard, but it didn't seem to translate.
Thanks anyway.

Hi,
Thank you for your suggestions. However, I have a couple of questions: -I didn't understand the picture of the on-screen keyboard. What was the reason for that, please? -I looked at the link to use a key mapper. Would that replace a numbers lock key? Thanks. |

Hi Katherine,
Since Tomc mentioned the on-screen keyboard and you were trying to set NumLock in it...
Anyway, instead of experimenting with this or with a keyboard remapper I think it would be far easier to simply connect a standard USB keyboard to your laptop. Most standard Logitech, Ewent, Microsoft keyboards will do.
You would have all the standard buttons in all the standard places.
Another option would be to attach a separate NumPad to your laptop. ------------------------- Turbocharge your Dragon productivity with 40+ Power Addons |

Hi,
Thank you for your suggestion. Perhaps getting another keyboard will be the simplest answer.

I googled "Dell where is numlock key" and found
https://www.techwalla.com/articles/how-do-i-lock-the-number-keys-on-a-dell-laptop => fn+F11 Some keyboards have NumLk on fn +m F7, F8, Insert, ... https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/663115/Why+is+my+number+pad+not+working => The number pad may be disabled in BIOS... instructions to enable on the link. (I personally nearly always disable the in-keyboard numeric keypad.) Several wwebsites say that "Mouse Keys" < Ease of Access < Control Panel can disable numeric keybad -- I can't vouch for this. My Dell laptop has a numeric keypad with numlock. Burt I was curious, since I have just been doing some AHK bindings to an external numeric keypad. ------------------------- DPG15.6 (also DPI 15.3) + KB, Sennheiser MB Pro 1 UC ML, BTD 800 dongle, Windows 10 Pro, MS Surface Book 3, Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU @ 1.3/1.5GHz (4 cores, 8 logical, GPU=NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 with Max-Q Design. |

Hi,
Thank you for your suggestions.
I looked at the tech walla article; unfortunately, there is no function key on my keyboard.
I also looked at the iFixit post and tried the suggestion, but it didn't seem to work. I am working on a PC, not a laptop.
I appreciate the input.
Regards, Katherine. |

If this is a desktop computer you definitely need to get a real keyboard. Manufacturer included keyboards are typically crap. Personally, we prefer short press keys such as the ones that are included on notebook computers. They're not easy to find because most keyboards are long throw keys. Yikes! We recommend checking out the Logi MX (MAP priced $99.99) and Logi Craft (MAP priced $199.99). We use the Logi Craft but it only adds a programmable dial for minor additional features like zoom and music volume. If you would like a lower price, check out the K380 ($36.99) ------------------------- Change "No" to "Know" w/KnowBrainer 2022 |

Hi, Lunis, Thank you for your reply and recommendations. I agree, this keyboard certainly doesn't do what one would expect. Quick question: what is a short press key and what is a long throw key? I looked those up online and couldn't seem to get an answer. Thank you. Regards, Katherine. |

Notebook computer keyboards and the keyboards we recommended feature short press keys. A short keypress is typically about 1/8 of an inch. A long press key requires moving the keys up to 1\2 inch. We can't imagine why most keyboard users would choose to go through the extra work. Simply put, a short keystroke should be faster than a long keystroke.
