I believe these products need to be used with  something worn on the belt -  but poking around the system diagrams seem to show multiple boxes.

 

 

---+  BACKGROUND -  why I ask?

 

I just came back from my 4th trip since last June -  and COVID willing  maybe looking at more.

 

I am quite frustrated  that I cannot use speech recognition when traveling  by plane.  Historically I have done some of my best work flying across the continent.   mostly noise  interfering with speech recognition, whether  through my Sennheiser headset to my PC.  But also security/privacy,  and desire to avoid  disturbing my fellow passengers.

 

Similarly,  I have frequently worked in airport restaurants and frequent flyer refuges  while on long layovers.   Noise less of a concern, but again security/privacy and avoid disturbing people nearby.

 

I came home resolved to investigate a Stenomask for dictation using Dragon  while traveling, e.g. on plane. Googling found the Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stenomask, which said "Microphones that work much like a stenomask are used by aircraft ground crews to communicate with cockpit crews in airport environments with extreme engine noise, and are usually part of their headsets."    Further googling "ground crew headsets" found David Clark being  most prominent.

 

I know that Lunis recommends against Stenomask -  inaccurate, uncomfortable,  requiring breathing control. Nevertheless, no harm asking.

All of these microphones should work but we believe they are overkill. Accuracy may not be ideal because it is difficult to use over the mouth microphones. Your ears will also probably sweat.

We recommend taking a different approach. Check out the much less expensive Audio-Technica Pro 8HEmW microphone (w/KB PLUS PACK). Make certain you add a USB soundcard. This microphone was designed for vocalists standing in front of refrigerator size speaker systems. If they can block that much sound, they should be able to handle a prop plane. Jets are much quieter. This microphone doesn't include speakers which gives you the option of not having to wear headset speakers or choosing your favorites to play music while traveling. This is how we travel with the air marshals

Lunis: the microphone you recommend, Audio-Technica Pro 8HEmW, undoubtedly will enable recognition in a noisy environment such as a plane - I will trust you on that. However, as far as I can tell it does absolutely nothing for preventing me from being overheard, whether in a noisy plane or in a quiet restaurant on the ground. to me that privacy/security aspect is probably as important as noise tolerance.

I can't comment on the Audio-Technica Pro 8HEmW as I have no experience with that. But I can tell you that I have been able to dictate with laryngitis using the BOOM O--which amazed me. It also is very good in terms of noise cancelling.

@MDH, @Lunis: Thank you for your replies, but you both seem to miss that I am as much or more interested in the privacy&security aspects of a mouth covering microphone like the Stenomask as I am in the recognition accuracy aspects.

There was a thread on here about whispering while dictating. I have tried it and I was impressed with how well it went- though I did not do it for long. I tried it with a pretty cheap mic too. I think that is what MDH is getting at with the laryngitis, comment. Whispering is pretty hard for people to decipher so if you were able to dictate while whispering or while speaking very softly, then it might be a solution to the privacy concerns.

This is not what AG is asking about, but whispering is not a problem in terms of accuracy if you can adjust the distance between your mouth and the microphone element to the absolute minimum. When using a handheld microphone, this is very easy to do. It is all down to the laws of physics after all, and if you are using a desktop microphone for instance, anything can happen. I have heard, though, that there are some medical concerns with whispering for too long.

Did not mean to continue to take the thread the wrong direction.  I was thinking about it and I wonder if a vented anti fog face sheild would muffle the sound enough.
