Hi all,

I'm on the verge of getting a new computer, vacillating between the older Dell XPS 15 vs the Dell XPS 15 which they call "New." What it comes down to for me right now is that the older model has a variety of ports, while the "New" has only USB-C and Thunderbolt. (The New one does come with one USB-A/USB-C adapter in the box.)

I currently use a Bluetooth microphone, but if I were to want to switch to a wired microphone in the future, would you recommend the computer that has an actual USB-A, vs having to plug into a USB-A/USB-C adapter?

How about if there is a hub in the mix – like if I were to get a USB-C/USB-A hub which has multiple USB-A ports and plug the microphone into one of those USB-A ports – how do the microphones perform going through an adapter/hub combo?

I'm also wondering if there are any direct USB-C mics (that don’t break the bank).

Thanks
Jacky

I use a Sampson meteor USB microphone that is fed through a USB hub to my computer. Everything works fine. If I was in your shoes and there is no difference between the computers except the parts, I would choose the one with the most ports. The USB hub will not make any difference at all. I have tried probably five microphones through my hub, with no difference whatsoever. I even tried some earbuds with a TRRS tip-ring-ring-sleeve plug into a TRRS-to-USB adapter to plug into the USB hub to plug into my computer. None of the links made any difference at all to Dragon.

We have USB microphone tested USB 2 vs USB 3 vs USB C. We concur with KKKwj findings. Our new i9 desktop came with 7 USB 3s, 4 USB 2s and 2 USB Cs (twice the speed of USB 3). There is no difference and if the legacy 90s USB 1 ports still existed, any USB microphone would work equally well. The speed of a USB 1 port is about 10 times more than a USB microphone requires. In other words, using a higher-speed USB port won't help or hurt. However, when possible, it is better to use a USB port that is connected directly to the motherboard. All notebook computer USB ports are connected to your computer's motherboard. We don't recommend USB hubs because they all too frequently lose connection to your computer.

Both very helpful answers. Thank you.

I'll update my profile when my brand-spanking-new Dell computer arrives in about a month!
