In our opinion, there are only 3 professional digital recorders worth using for Dragon transcription. They include the Olympus DS-9500/DS-9000, Philips SpeechAir DSP2100 and Philips DPM8000.

You will find a detailed comparison in our updated KnowBrainer Digital Recorder Face-Off but the short answer is as follows:

• 1st place is actually a tie between the DS-9500 and SpeechAir. It's really down to preferences. If you don't mind a lower battery life, heavier recorder, shorter warrantee, going to be recording in quiet or moderately quiet environment a want to be able to recharge your SpeechAir around the world, then you will seriously enjoy the extra features in the SpeechAir, such as being able to email your recordings or browse the Internet. The SpeechAir is truly a pleasure to operate. However, if noisy dictations, a double warrantee, replaceable batteries, more rugged case significantly better battery life and the ability to dictate with higher accuracy in noisy environments are important, go with the DS-9500. More details in our review.

• The DPM 8000 is yesterday's news, overpriced and should no longer be considered as a competitor.
