Hi All,
I'm using the latest Dragon 15 professional. I want to dictate "Good afternoon" and have the software type "Good Afternoon" - followed by the name I say. I want the A to be capitalized.
I've tried every variation I can with Vocabulary editor, it simply does not do it. Any suggestions? |

There are many ways to achieve this.
The most obvious is simply saying "Good 'Cap' Afternoon". Whenever you use the "Cap" command it will capitalize the following word. Just use it as part of your dictation. Alternatively, if you are in an application with fulltext control, like Microsoft Word, then you can say "Good Afternoon" and then tell Dragon "correct that" and it will give you an option to capitalize the text as you like. |

That is 100% correct however I'd like this to be done automatically. I had this setup a while back, but moved to a new computer, and now I cannot figure it out after spending hours researching, watching YouTube, playing with Vocab Editor, etc. Any automated option to type Good Afternoon when I say Good afternoon? |

You can go into vocabulary editor and change what it prints to having a capital A, the only problem with this is every time you use the word it will then be capitalized. This may or may not be a problem for you. Use it for several words either capitalizing them or abbreviating them all the time.

If you've messed around in the Vocabulary Editor a lot, there's a chance the vocabulary associated with this profile has been affected. But before concluding this, try these steps:
Open the Vocabulary Editor. 1.1. Display "Words with custom properties only." 1.2. If the properties for "good" or "afternoon" have been modified, I advise you to stop here and go to Section 3. You can try restoring the defaults for these words, but if that doesn't work, you're going to need a new profile anyway. Because a new profile only takes five or ten minutes to create, it might be faster to go ahead and do just that than to spend the time to fix a vocabulary... which is often futile! ------ 2.1. Display "Custom words only." 2.2. If "Good Afternoon" appears on the list, delete it. 2.3. Add "Good Afternoon" but do NOT specify a "Spoken Form" and do NOT train it. 2.4. Close the Vocabulary Editor. 2.5. Test by dictating "Good Afternoon" as a single utterance. Does it work? If yes, you're done. If not, try correcting the phrase. Test again. If it fails a second time, I wouldn't spend another minute trying to fix the problem. Go to Section 3. ------ 3.1. Create a new profile. 3.2. Open the Vocabulary Editor. 3.3. Add "Good Afternoon" but do NOT specify a "Spoken Form" and do NOT train it. 3.4. Close the Vocabulary Editor. 3.5. Test by dictating "Good Afternoon" as a single utterance. Does it work? If yes, go back to your old Dragon profile, export your custom words and custom commands. Open your new Dragon profile, and import your custom words and commands. 3.6. Continue to use your new profile to make sure everything is working. When you're convinced it's OK, you might as well delete your old profile. |

I just tried doing this through the vocabulary editor, but very fortunately, it did not take, no matter my efforts in attempting, obviously insisting on its own built in rules. The overall question being why you should actually want to do that in the first place? I for one, if I ever receive a message printed like that, I would start wondering about the writing skills of the person creating the message. ------------------------- The New Game in Town: DragonConnect |

Same here - I tried those exact steps and could not get the A to be capitalized, even with a new user profile. Oh well.
And as far as WHY I want it like that - great question, I'm a lender and do things a specific way that I see fits best. It's paid off so far. |

The only way to achieve this may be to create a custom AutoText command called "Good Afternoon" that outputs "Good Afternoon."
You will need to pause briefly before saying the command, and after. But the pause only needs to be a fraction of a second. The spacing before and after might get messed up:Good Afternoon... Notice there is no space between the colon and the word "Good." Personally, the approach I would take is cultivating the habit of saying "cap good cap afternoon". Sometimes it's better to understand the limitations of Dragon, and then work within those constraints. |

Auto Text solved the problem, PERFECTLY.
I truly appreciate this, I spent so many hours on trying to resolve this.
Would you accept any token of appreciation? You can PM me. Much appreciated. |

To OP:
This subject can get a little touchy around here. In any pursuit there are always "purists" or "fundamentalists" who would like padawans not to deviate from the "righteous path" ... perhaps out of honourable intention ultimately.
P.S #2, regarding the solution above, "disambiguation" is as far as anyone would go. I am sure you wouldn't delete the word "afternoon", nor would anyone advise you to. |

In some near future version of KnowBrainer it may be possible to define a postfix speech command " capitalized" so that "good afternoon capitalized" --gives--> "Good Afternoon"
i.e. is equivalent to standard Dragon "cap good cap afternoon" and "caps on good afternoon caps off" or "good cap afternoon" <-- if you know that "good" will be capitalized because of his position.
I.e. " capitalized" would be the postfix form of the prefix form "capitalize ". You can already write a speech command for the latter prefix form.
Like the OP I find the standard Dragon way of saying this awkward. Even the prefix speech command form I find awkward. For some reason I find the postfix form much more comfortable.

NOTE: I have nothing to do with the coding of KnowBrainer or this particular feature. I just think it's a really good idea, and I want to provide positive feedback to the guy or guys implementing it. ------------------------- DPG15.6 (also DPI 15.3) + KB, Sennheiser MB Pro 1 UC ML, BTD 800 dongle, Windows 10 Pro, MS Surface Book 3, Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU @ 1.3/1.5GHz (4 cores, 8 logical, GPU=NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 with Max-Q Design. |

In KnowBrainer 2022, you can say Title Case <dictation> for Caps and UPPERCASE <dictation> for ALL-CAPS ------------------------- Change "No" to "Know" w/KnowBrainer 2022 |

Right... Which is exactly what I don't like saying. I find the postfix form much more pleasant. IIRC Rudiger is adding arbitrary position <dictation>, postfix, prefix, or infix, to the forthcoming version of KnowBrainer.

That's too bad. Heaven knows Rüdiger and I have had our differences, but he does good work. I continue to be a very happy customer of DragonCapture, and the parts of SAPI he linked to were very educational.
My apologies if I exposed any dirty laundry; and my particular apologies if anything I said pissed Rüdiger off enough for him to quit. ------------------------- DPG15.6 (also DPI 15.3) + KB, Sennheiser MB Pro 1 UC ML, BTD 800 dongle, Windows 10 Pro, MS Surface Book 3, Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU @ 1.3/1.5GHz (4 cores, 8 logical, GPU=NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 with Max-Q Design. |

AG,
I don't think that it was you exposing dirtry laundry, and it wasn't anything you said or did causing this. It was actually Lunis and myself disagreeing over ownership. I will publish my project one way or the other though, but under a different namespace, and I won't advertise it here since Lunis won't allow it.
Thanks for the kind words.

Auto Text solved the problem, PERFECTLY. I truly appreciate this, I spent so many hours on trying to resolve this. Would you accept any token of appreciation? You can PM me. Much appreciated. For over 16 years, people on this forum have been generously answering my questions. Glad you're finding my solution helpful. If you want to kick it up a notch, you might want to try this (untested) Advanced Scripting command: Command name: Good Afternoon <dictation> Sub Main SendKeys "Good Afternoon " & ListVar1 & "," & vbCR End Sub For example, if you say "good afternoon Henry" the command should output the Good Afternoon, the name, and a comma, and then start a new line. There are many ways this command might fail, so be careful! |
