Hi all,

I currently have two different laptops running Dragon on Windows 11. Each laptop has its own Dragon license.

Recently, as soon as Dragon is opened, both of the laptops start running slow. They are slow to open up Word documents and Excel spreadsheets, and there are also issues with file manager.

When carrying out some troubleshooting on both of the laptops, I checked the Windows event viewer, and have come up with the following Dragon error in the Windows event log -

Error: Failed to get access to DgnEngineControl

From the limited information I could find, this error normally occurs when working with the medical version of Dragon, and is to prevent Dragon from accessing personal information in medical databases.

Has anyone seen this error before, and if so, what did you do to fix it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

P

How much RAM does the PC have otherwise it's a guess! Dragon PE will use 2 GB RAM on it's own. WIndows will use 6 GB on it's own so that is everything a 8 GB RAM machine would have so it will use Harddrive for cache 16 GB RAM min I would recomend

The laptop has an i7 processor, a 512 GB hard drive and 16 GB of RAM.

When Dragon Professional Individual is not running, the laptop is very fast, it is only when I opened Dragon it slows down significantly.

Checking the Task Manager, Dragon does not seem to be very resource hungry.

Did your computer begin running slowly immediately after you installed Dragon and created a new user profile or a few weeks later? We mention this because user profiles can swell to the point of slowing everything down. This is 1 of the reasons we created the KnowBrainer Dragon Installation/Training Guide, which includes pictorial details on the installation process, a list of Dragon commands organized by category and pictorial details on fixing 30 sandtraps.

Our 1st suspicion was a problem with your RAM but this sounds unlikely in 2 separate computers.

Lunis, the laptop was working well for the first couple of weeks. Now, a few weeks later, anytime Dragon is run, it slows down the computer, but when Dragon is closed, it returns to top speed.

Since I posted the original message, I have wiped Windows 11 of the computer and have switched it to Windows 10. There are still signs of the error after installing Dragon, but it has not got slow yet.

I am going to make the "sandtrap" changes you suggested in the Knowbrainer to see if they also helps.

Lunis's manual has recommened settings to combat Dragon running slow....  His 30 sandtraps helped my computer when dragon gets slow after a few hours of use and I use to have to reboot.....  Good Stuff

Hi!

This error is not related to to Dragon trying to keep you from using the non-medical versions in a medical context.

It stems from the technological foundation on which Dragon is built: A system named "Component Object Model" (COM), which has been around since the early days.

The mentioned DgnEngineControl is something you can use to get access to the Dragon engine itself, the part that's responsible for loading speaker profiles and vocabularies, among other things.

Usually, if there's such an error, you also get an error code (usually starting with 0x...) containing further information about where the error comes from, it's severity and the type of error.

Is there such a number in your event log?

Thanks!

The error comes from the "Dragon Service" dragonsvc, which is one of two services Dragon installs during setup (together with the "Dragon Logger service").

I'm not really sure what the Dragon Service does - several versions ago there was a mobile microphone app for iOS and Android from Nuance and this app communicated with your local Dragon via a WebService. I think this WebService was hosted inside this Dragon Service, but I'm not sure if it really was this service or a different one.

I have disabled this service on my machine (albeit Win10) and couldn't find any adverse effects.

Sometimes, the system can become very sluggish due to a lot of disk I/O.

The Dragon Logger Service is known to have written hundreds of megabytes of log files at times, bogging down the whole system in the process.

You could check your %programdata%\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking15\logs folder if there is more than the usual amount of log files...

Ah, good hint with the Dragon Service. I disabed it on my machine now, as well, and will keep an eye on what happens.

The sluggishness could have easily been caused by a continuously bloating Dragon user profile. Your manual will take care of that and can even fix your existing user profiles. We prefer Windows 10 but you probably didn't need to take off Windows 11
