I did post a few months ago about a microphone lag issue on windows 10. Sometimes Dragon NaturallySpeaking 15 is excellent and it barely makes a mistake. However, there are times when I'm continually correcting what Dragon has written! I'm using a Sennheiser SC 165 USB (508317) headset, I also sometimes use the recommended Dragon USB headset.

I must admit I have always found Dragon to be rather erratic, having good days and bad days! I will regularly check the microphone by reading the "read text to configure the microphone" that Dragon provides, just in case my voice changes. As I mentioned before, I believe this is a Windows problem rather than a microphone problem as I also have the same issue if I use Google Chrome voice search.

Is there anything I could purchase to liven up the response time? I'm talking about something that I don't really know anything about. However, knowing what technology is like, I guess there must be something that I could do to liven the microphone up or at least its response.

Overall, I probably receive slightly better results from the recommended Dragon USB microphone headset. However, I prefer the Sennheiser headset as that has stereo headphones! When I test the microphone, I can see that the green response markers are more responsive to the Dragon USB microphone than the Sennheiser headset.

Thank you for reading; any help is appreciated.

Roy

I find the following method hints when a sound quality issue exists. The method doesn't identify the source, only that there is a problem. (The problem can be one of many things, or a combination, including incorrect microphone position, a piece of hardware that is failing, touching the microphone element while dictating, speaking too loudly or softly, background noise, etc.

0. Dictate as usual for a few minutes.

1. Open the Recognition History.

2. Click "Save with Details..."

3. Save the file.

4. Open the file in a text editor, e.g., Notepad.

You'll see a bunch of gibberish:

Ignore everything except for the number after "sN" on each line. ("sN" means "signal to noise ratio")

My experience has been that Dragon works nicely when sN values are mostly between 20 and 30. Don't be concerned with occasional lower or higher values. Lower values indicate too much noise in the audio stream. Higher values indicate the microphone is too "hot."

Good morning Alan,

Thank you for your feedback, I do appreciate it.

I have carried out all the normal tests, including different headsets. However, I will see what results I get from your suggestion.

I do appreciate your help.

Roy

The Nuance HS-Jen-25 and Sennheiser SC 165 USB microphone construction and comfort are not exactly stellar but both units accuracy should be OK. Keep in mind that these are low end USB Microphones. However, their accuracy shouldn't be good one day and not so good another. Both microphones should continuously produce acceptable accuracy, in noise free environments. Noise filtering is minimal in these 2 microphones so a quiet environment is recommended.

The next time you're accuracy plummets, we recommend opening DragonPad, dictate a few words, pause and then say play that back. You are listing for interference.

If speech recognition plays a major role in your workflow, we recommend using the best tools. A professional mechanic doesn't use knuckle busting wrenches. Good to great noise filtering usually translates into better accuracy, even in relatively quiet environments. If you can justify the cost for the best tools, we recommend checking out the Addasound KB SR2831 wired HD USB headset and the new Shokz OpenComm UC Bone Conduction Bluetooth headset.

Good morning Lunis,

Thank you for your input, it's very much appreciated.

Due to the problem being sporadic, I believe it's harder to identify.

However, I do use Dragon a lot, so it is probably worth investing in a decent microphone. Out of the two suggestions, is there any difference in quality, please?

Roy
