That's because Alan probably changed Explorer View to not show the Navigation Pane (Organize --> Layout --> Navigation Pane).
Sadly there is no quick way to set the focus to the main folder section in Save as dialogs in Windows Explorer. The best you can do is say "press tab" (maybe repeat that command depending on your Explorer view) to shift the focus there.
Another option would be to use a program like VoiceComputer for direct access to that section (the Lite version will do).
Yet another option would be to create a mouse position command to set the focus to the main folder section. However, if at some point you resize the window or maximize it, that mouse position command may no longer be accurate. Well, one would then think. I will simply make it always show maximized (by double-clicking the title bar). But sadly Windows has a tendency to reset the default state on its own on a regular basis :-(.
