Whatever I say just gets typed in as the file name, whether I prefix it with click or not.

The only words I can dictate to select are any that appear in the address bar/cookie trail? (Unless I first leave the file name text entry box)

I notice your box doesn't have the left-sided column like mine:

Interestingly, when I have: "This PC > Acer (C" displaying in the address bar, then navigate to it (at this point it changes to: "C:\") and over type it with "Disability" it performs some sort of basics search function and changes to: "Documents > Disability".

When I have type was there with "chrome" and press enter, it loads Google Chrome!

Every day is a school day!

That's because Alan probably changed Explorer View to not show the Navigation Pane (Organize --> Layout --> Navigation Pane).

Sadly there is no quick way to set the focus to the main folder section in Save as dialogs in Windows Explorer. The best you can do is say "press tab" (maybe repeat that command depending on your Explorer view) to shift the focus there.

Another option would be to use a program like VoiceComputer for direct access to that section (the Lite version will do).

Yet another option would be to create a mouse position command to set the focus to the main folder section. However, if at some point you resize the window or maximize it, that mouse position command may no longer be accurate.

Well, one would then think. I will simply make it always show maximized (by double-clicking the title bar). But sadly Windows has a tendency to reset the default state on its own on a regular basis :-(.

It's a small, but annoying issue for sure. I wish Microsoft would by default set the focus to the main folder section in dialogs by default.

Yes, I changed the view of File Explorer to always hide the Navigation pane. I've got other ways to navigate that don't gobble up a substantial portion of the window's real estate!

This is a good time to use the "Mouse Window" command. Saying "Mouse Window... 5... click" usually puts focus into the list of files and folders.

I find the issue more than annoying. I would characterize it as an accessibility and usability failure. The behaviour you describe was the default before Windows 7.

I used to report these kinds of problems to Microsoft, but I stopped when I realized nobody at Microsoft was paying attention to me!
