When I try to start KnowBrainer2020 after installation over KB2017 (which appears to go smoothly) I get a small process stub named KBPro.exe *32 of size around 3,944 K but no flash start-up screen and no KnowBrainer.  This happens whether I start DMPE first (which I've had to do for a long time as KB2017 lost its ability to start DMPE itself) or try to have KB2020 start itself and DMPE.  I've tried the usual uninstall-reinstall cycles with no change in behavior.  I upgraded to 2020 thinking the issues with 2017 would not be present, but no luck so far.  There is no request for the license I purchased although one time there was a KB process in Task Manager that seemed to reference a license check.  Running Windows 7 (blame my employer!).

Suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Terry

So...I uninstalled KB2020 and the KB Command Updater. Made sure all AppData files were gone as indicated in another thread. Rebooted. Re-installed KB2017 and ran it. Functioned as expected. Then ran the installer for KB2020. Started DMPE and loaded a user. Tried to run KB2020; same problem as before. Killed background KB process and shut down DMPE. Re-started KB2020 and this time it came up with the requester for registration, which ran properly. KB2020 then started appropriately and loaded DMPE. I haven't had the courage to kill KB2020 and re-load with DMPE already running, which is a lot faster just 'cause I hate to mess with success. As I recall my issues with KB2017 all started when I tried to use the original KB Command Updater. I'm hesitant to install the new KB Command Updater.

Any thoughts would be appreciated but I'm up and running for now.

We don't recommend changing anything at this point but KnowBrainer 2020 upgrades are full installations and do not require KnowBrainer 2017.

On another note: It's really time for your employer to move up to Windows 10 considering that Windows 11 is already here. However, we do not recommend Windows 11 quite yet.

Thanks, Lunis. I made the assumption that the "upgrade" product required some evidence that 2017 was hanging around somewhere! As for my employer, don't get me started. Curiously, all the C-suite denizens and their clerical support staff have Windows 10. Those of us in the trenches, well, no. Above my paygrade! My employer also switched away from Nuance's DNS some-version-or-another to M*Modal which, after trying it for about a week, I dumped from my system to return to DMPE even though I had to pay for it myself.
