I am running KB2020 and I have downloaded the latest version of the Commands Updater.   When I run the program I get the error message KnowBrainer Professional 2018 is required for the installation.  How can I get the latest version of the updater installed?

The miserable KnowBrainer Command Updater 2018 keeps popping up everywhere. We have been trying to find and assassinate it because KnowBrainer 2018 only existed for a few minutes. Try KBCommandsUpdater (2020) which is a direct download. Your browser has probably buffered an older PDF file

 

It really necessary to update KnowBrainer 2020 at this point but it's good to have the updater utility ready.

Surely you meant to say  "It is not really necessary to update KnowBrainer 2020 —"  Rather than  "It really necessary to update KnowBrainer 2020  —."

 I downloaded the updater shown in your post but when I ran it, I got the error message:

You are receiving that message because the download address http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/KBCommandsUpdater.msi doesn't begin with HTTPS:, like secure sites. It is generally assumed that any time you are downloading from our website, you would already know that it's safe but we probably should change the download site address to reflect that it is secure. We will put it on our webmasters list but you can safely download

The download is perfectly safe but as previously explained, the address begins with HTTP rather than HTTPS. You can ignore that warning We've downloaded several times over the last 48 hours

My problem is that when I click on the link you provided, I get the error message: "KBCommandsUpdater.MSI can't be downloaded securely" and the only thing I get in the Downloads folder is a 1.03 MB File named "Unconfirmed 195278.crdownload."

Update:

I went to the settings for Microsoft Edge/Privacy, search, and services and turned off the Microsoft Defender Smart screen option. That let me download the file "KBCommandsUpdater.MSI."  When I ran the file, I still get the message "KnowBrainer Professional 2018 is required for the installation."

We do not know why you keep getting the KnowBrainer 2018 updater but this http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/KBCommandsUpdater.msi link is the KnowBrainer 2020 download. Try emptying your browser buffer. We just uninstalled and reinstalled the KnowBrainer 2020 updater without issue. The KnowBrainer 2018 updater should not even exist

 

PS: You don't have to disable Defender to download this installation. When prompted, click the 2nd link which is something like “more options” and you should be able to bypass the download warning

I am getting the same problem.

 

When I try to install the KnowBrainer updater I get an error message saying that KnowBrainer 2018 has to be installed.  Then the app installation terminates.

Thanks to Rüdiger, we have just replaced the KnowBrainer 2018 updater with the KnowBrainer 2020 KBCommandsUpdater at http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/KBCommandsUpdaterInstaller_2020.msi Note that your current download PDF information is also up-to-date so either download should now work

 

PS: Windows 11 users will receive dire warnings about this download but it is safe.

It looks like we screwed up by accidentally replacing the KnowBrainer 2020 updater with the KnowBrainer 2018 updater...AGAIN. We will contact Rüdiger Wilke to help us out again and make the appropriate updater available.

Most likely because of Norton. In my Microsoft Edge, I get a warning, but may get past it. It is because the KB download page is not HTTPS.

When I click the link from Mr. Wilke I am able to download the .msi file.

 

When I try to install it, I still get the message requiring KnowBrainer 2018 and then after that get a "Installation Incomplete" dialogue box saying that the installation was terminated.

Many thanks for the feedback, particularly the screenshots. Very often, a picture says more than 1,000 words, and I can see the mistake been made here. Now please work with me.

Actually, the message is a misnomer. A mistake which happened when copying from the previous version, but not updating the text, which should read "this utility requires KnowBrainer 2020".

Effectively, this is what the installer searches for, before if goes on, or terminates otherwise:

[ProgramFilesFolder]\KnowBrainer\KnowBrainer 2020\KBPro.exe

So, does this file exist in the specified path on your systems?

I will update the installer and post about it later today.

I do not have the KnowBrainer 2020 folder in my Program Files directory.  In the Program Files (x86) directory I have KnowBrainer 2016 KnowBrainer 2017 but not KnowBrainer 2020 nor KnowBrainer 2018.

Thanks for being so kind, but I wouldn't actually call that "making progress". 

The file and path which is searched for typically looks like this:

 

C:\Program Files (x86)\KnowBrainer\KnowBrainer 2020\KBPro.exe

 

Can you also make a screenshot of this address in File Explorer? Or do you have duplicate entries perhaps?

The whole idea of creating this updater came up as a replacement for the manual approach previously used, and it depends on factors which I cannot control, such as file locations.

We haven't seen this event since KnowBrainer 2017 but we know it can happen on some systems. We don't know the cause but if you check your email, you'll find the latest KnowBrainer commands and instructions on where to drop the MyKBComands.XML command file.

As directed above, I went to the location recommended in explorer and KnowBrainer 2020 is not shown there. Instead, see the screenshot of what is at that location (KB directory). It is KnowBrainer Professional 2017 even though I have KnowBrainer 2020 installed and running.

Furthermore, another user's reference above mentions them finding reference to KnowBrainer 2020 program at this address

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\KnowBrainer 2020

 

This led me to look at this address on my computer. I found the same as the user except it was a shortcut file. When I looked into the actual path that the shortcut led to, I discovered this

"C:\Program Files (x86)\KnowBrainer\KnowBrainer Professional 2017\KBPro.exe"

As has been shown by an earlier screenshot, which is attached in one of my earlier posts above, I am definitely running KnowBrainer 2020 yet the designated 2020 pathway, which presumably is required for updating, is not where it is supposed to be.

 

Lunis said to check email although nothing has arrived yet.

Using a dedicated file searching application I went looking for KnowBrainer 2020. The attachment (Knowbrainer 2020 word appearance) shows what I found. Note that some of these findings, like PDFs, are my own saved files showing my installation key or purchase receipt et cetera in case I need it later.

Thank you very much for the feedback, both of you. It isn't the shortcut under ProgramData which matters, it is where the Program Files are located, and the exact path name. Unfortunately, if you have things left behind from previous installations, the current method may fail, or fails obviously. I wouldn't have created a new updater when KnowBrainer 2020 came out if the internal folder path hadn't changed again also.

I will get back to you and provide you with an installer which doesn't search as a prerequisite, later today, possibly much later.

For those, like me initaially, who wondered what installing this software does? 

After downloading and running the latest update software, available via the link posted by R. Wilke, a shortcut on my desktop called, "KBCommandsUpdater2020" was created.

This is a shortcut to "C:\Program Files (x86)\KnowBrainer Inc\KnowBrainer Commands Updater 2020 Latest No File Search\"  with the target "C:\Program Files (x86)\KnowBrainer Inc\KnowBrainer Commands Updater 2020 Latest No File Search\KBCommandsUpdater.exe"

I closed Knowbrainer. Double clicked the new desktop shortcut "KBCommandsUpdater2020" and my KB 2020 commands were updated to the latest version.
