Your KnowBrainer 2020 has a solution for that also. If you wish to open a file, spreadsheet, PDF, folder etc., from within File Explorer, use your KnowBrainer Open <dictation> command. For example, if you have your work folder open and you wish to open a subfolder by the name of “hogwash” say Open <hogwash>. Unfortunately there is a catch. We just found an error in the command so you will need to update your current KnowBrainer installation with the KBCommandUpdater

Thank you, Edgar. I've been navigating that way for a while. What I am looking for is a way of quickly jumping to folders that are not visible on the screen. For instance, let's say I have a few different subfolders in a "Taxes" folder, I'd like to get to one of the subfolders without going through several different steps of selecting folders.

Lunis, this "open [dictation]" does not activate a command when I utter it in the Windows Explorer dialog box. It is recognized as text every time. Also, it wasn't clear to me whether this command would only work for folders or files that are currently visible in the screen or whether it would be helpful in jumping around to other folders/files that are not currently visible.

I'm wondering if I need to copy the file directory of my most commonly used folders and create speech commands that then enter those file directories into the address bar and take me there.

For this, I have a command (currently written in C++ but originally a Dragon command). You're going to want to name this command with some fairly obscure trigger preface and give it a list of target files and folders:
Explore <FilesFolders>

the list will consist of "aliases to" files/applications and folders:

App Data

See Drive

D Drive

Taxes Folder

My Novel

etc.

unless you want to use a DVC command (which can be done but is a little more complicated) the code would look something like this:

   Select Case ListVar1

      Case "See Drive"

         ShellExecute "C:\"

      Case "D Drive"

         ShellExecute "D:\"

      Case "Taxes Folder"

         ShellExecute "D:\Taxes\"

      Case "My Novel"

         ShellExecute "D:\Novel\Novel.DOCX"

      Case Else

         TTSPlayString "not yet implemented"

   End Select

Brooklyn,

The original KnowBrainer Open <dictation> command is broken so you will need to update through our KBCommandsUpdater, as previously noted.

HOWEVER, did you know that if you instruct Windows to index your entire computer (other than the operating system) you can now open any folder or file instantly. In other words, you don't have to open File Explorer if you know the name of your folder, file, spreadsheet, song etc. For example, if you wish to open a subfolder by the name of “who let the dogs out” on Drive D (4 subfolders deep) say Windows Open Folder <who let>. Think Siri or Alexa. KnowBrainer 2020 now includes the ability to open any email (in Outlook only), OneNote, document, file etc. without going through File Explorer.

PS: If you don't know where to find Windows indexing options just say Windows Open <indexing>. Let your KnowBrainer app do the heavy lifting

Lunis, yes, I am really impressed by the "Windows open [dictation]". That's why I started this thread, because I was looking for a way to do that once I am already inside of a file Explorer dialogbox – such as when I am trying to save a file in a certain folder or attach a file.

I have already updated KB 2020 and the "open [dictation]" does not work. Have you tried testing it on your system now?
How should it work – is it a way of selecting a file or folder that is already on the screen? Or can it select a file or folder that is not currently visible but located elsewhere in Windows?

Thanks.

Have you updated your KnowBrainer 2020 installation with the KBCommandUpdater?

Yes, the build date for my version of KB is 12-02-2021.

Can you give me an actual example of a command you would use with this "Open [dictation]" command when inside a Windows Explorer dialog box?

Thank you.

You are up to date. Try placing your cursor inside a File Explorer window. Let's say the folder the cursor is in includes another folder called “Work”. You should be able to say Open <work>  to simultaneously select and open the “Work” folder.
