I see from a brief reference in one of the forum posts and in the KnowBrainer store, that you have released KnowBrainer 2020. At this stage I cannot identify any information outlining the differences between KnowBrainer 2020 and 2017. I was wondering whether you could direct me to where this information, if available, is posted.

We haven't gotten around to posting this information but the original KnowBrainer 2017 commands are more than 5 years out of date. KnowBrainer 2017 also ran notably slower because of Windows updates. KnowBrainer 2020 is faster, coded for Windows latest updates and includes 5 years of command technology. We have been leaking some of the commands over the last few years but brought them altogether in this release. You'll find a 30 day trial in our signature tag

I'm interested to run a trial of Knowbrainer (currently using 2017).

However, in your signature, the trial is for 2017.

As a 2017 user can I trial the 2020 version?

I think I have most of the custom commands that I want already, so I am more interested in speed improvements or other enhancements to the user interface and things like that.

Thank you for the information. I also noted in some recent posts, that you suggested writing new commands in the Dragon Command Browser rather than the KnowBrainer software. Does the new version of the KnowBrainer software modify this recommendation?

You should stay with writing commands in Dragon until the 4th KnowBrainer generation is released (KnowBrainer 2023). KnowBrainer 2020 is the end of the 3rd generation. We will be recommending ONLY creating new commands in KnowBrainer 2023 and will not support writing commands in Dragon

Hi Lunis, if I run the updater on my 2017 KB binary, am I technically running "Knowbrainer 2020?" Or should I download a new binary and install it? Thank you.

The KBCommandsUpdater will not work on KnowBrainer 2017. It is designed for KnowBrainer 2020 but not currently needed. You'll find a 30 day trial in our signature tag.

Hi Lunis, your comment seems strange because I have run the KB commands updater several times before without incident. Did I completely miss the release of KB2020 somehow?

 

Does the 2020 version have a nice new interface or something? And you're already talking about the 2023 version - does it have a better interface or something? Any release notes that describe the differences between 2017 (plus updated commands) and the 2020 and 2023 versions? Thank you

• The KnowBrainer 2020 Upgrade was released a couple of weeks ago but was not finalized until today.

• The interface is the same as KnowBrainer 2017 but the code has been substantially improved. The latest KnowBrainer updater can no longer upgrade KnowBrainer 2017. It has been replaced with a new KBCommandsUpdater, which won't be needed for a while. 

• KnowBrainer 2023, as the name implies, is quite a while off and will feature a completely different interface. KnowBrainer 2020 is the last of the third-generation. The fourth-generation will be a different animal.

I purchased knowbrainer 2017 on Dec31, 2019.

1. How long is the free upgrade period?
2. If I am past the free upgrade period, how much is an upgrade?
3. And if I want another copy for a second or third computer (I'm the user, no one else, I have two desktops on my desk, a laptop for travel, and a third desktop in a rec room) is there any discount for a full second license?

The free upgrade is good for 90 days. Most companies don't go beyond 30 days. The KnowBrainer 2020 Upgrade is $99. You don't need a full license because your upgrade includes 5 activations and can be shared with your other computers.

Thanks for the quick reply - but when i tried to register on the second of two new computers, I get  a message "your license failed to activate. All the avaialbel licenses have alrweady been activated".   

As the error message noted, you have exhausted all 5 of your KnowBrainer activations. Our best guess is that you did not exercise the Release Activation option which can be found when right clicking on the KnowBrainer hidden icon. Unfortunately, we have no replacement serial numbers but this might be a good time to consider upgrading

can i reinstall on one of those old computers then go through the release activation?

 

Alternativerly, if i upgrade to 2022 will all five be reset?

The latest version sounds strange but is called KnowBrainer 2020 (with 2021 commands). You will receive 5 more activations and if required, we will issue you another complementary serial number so you won't run out. KnowBrainer 2017 is more than 5 years out of date so it's time for an upgrade.

We hadn't thought of that but reinstalling KnowBrainer 2017 on a computer that previously had KnowBrainer 2017 would work. Microsoft Windows registry remembers the serial number so you could install it, launch it and then choose Release Activation. You should do this on any old computer you still have access to.

Second question - do i install the update over the existing copy or do i unintall the existing copy and then install the update?

Before installing the KnowBrainer 2020 Upgrade, you will need to export your current KnowBrainer commands. This procedure is detailed in the KnowBrainer Manual on page 30, which is hyperlinked in the table of contents.

Suggestion: You might consider re-creating your commands in Dragon which now includes the same engine we use in KnowBrainer. This will make upgrading KnowBrainer easier in the future.

I 've been using the 2020 Trial Version for the last two weeks but have run out of activations. I am going to upgrade to 2020. I have a Flash drive from my purchase of KB2017, is it worth buying a new Flash drive with the 2020 update? Can I get additional activation codes to use until the 2020 upgrade arrives?

In our opinion, we wouldn't waste money on a new flash drive. The KnowBrainer 2020 Upgrade is a relatively small download

 

There are no additional trial serial numbers. We feel that 30 days should be ample. However, you can optionally install on another computer. Also note that KnowBrainer 2020, like Dragon, includes a 30 day customer satisfaction guarantee so depending on how you look at it, you already have an extra 30 days
