With the new "free-form" dictation list, one can add a "paren dictation" command that, in the event you say "paren that" will put parens around a selection and if you say anything else, will add that any thing else surrounded by parens:

Dragon Advanced Script:

<paren> <dictation>

Sub Main

    If UtilityProvider.ContextValue (1) = "that" Then

      SendKeys "^c",1
      Wait .1
      SendKeys "{(}^v{)}"

    Else

      SendKeys "{(}" & UtilityProvider.ContextValue(1) & "{)}"

    End If

End Sub

' paren = paren and parentheses

Or as a DVC:

<paren> <dictation>

If _arg2 = "that" Then

    SendSystemKeys "{ctrl+c}"

    Wait 100

End If

SendSystemKeys "{(}"

If _arg2 = "that" Then

    SendSystemKeys "{ctrl+v}{)}"

Else

    SendSystemKeys _arg2 & "{)}"

End If

' paren = paren and parentheses
