At the beginning of 2016 I was unable to get Vocola 2 working with Windows 10 and DNS 13. At the time, some other people (not everyone) were having similar problems.  Some of these people managed to get it to work with difficulty. I eventually gave up and reverted to DNS 10.1 on Windows 7 and an earlier Vocola version.

Have all the initial difficulties been resolved? I would appreciate it if Vocola users could comment on what versions they are now using (Vocola, DNS, Windows OS) and whether the installation was straightforward.

Thanks very much.

Joe

We are not Vocola users but if no one else responds, we wanted to point out that no version of Vocola is compatible with Dragon 15. It looks like Dragon 14 may be the last version of Dragon to support Vocola so if you wind up upgrading to Dragon 15, you might consider entertaining alternatives which include scripting macros directly in Dragon.

PS: Your assumption is correct about the time zones, which is silly.

Thanks for the reply, Lunis.
If I was starting from scratch I would cheerfully script macros directly in Dragon. The problem is I have many years development of Vocola commands that I would need to convert.

So let me rephrase my questions:
1) what Natlink/Vocola versions are people using with DNS 13 or 14?
2) Is the Vocola installation straightforward or problematic?

As far as future versions of DNS I will continue monitoring relevant discussions here and see what other people end up doing.

Thanks again,
Joe

We do not know the version numbers but we know that the latest versions work in Dragon 13/14. We also feel your pain. All versions of KnowBrainer through 2012 were based on Dragon legacy DVC scripting which is limited to Dragon. KnowBrainer 1 - 8 were originally just command collections that originally replaced the Dragon system.dvc (master command file). When we released the 1st independent version of KnowBrainer, i.e. KnowBrainer 2005, we took the path of least resistance by preserving the original scripts but all we were doing was putting off the real work. We wound up having to convert 8000 DVC scripts into VB for KnowBrainer 2014 but getting back on point…

The geniuses who donate a lot of devoted noncompensated time on updating Vocola might have another option. We say might because this is a little out of our wheelhouse but we are thinking that the Vocola developers could base it SAPI 5 (which we believe has already been accomplished) and utilize WSR in Command Mode. If the developers could do this, you could preserve your scripts by essentially running WSR in Command Mode so that you could run Dragon 15 and WSR at the same time. We are simply contributing our highly unqualified advice for consideration.

We are working on a utility that will be called KnowBrainer Universal which will include a built-in speech engine that be run independently but work with other speech recognition utilities such as WSR, Google etc.

fwiw here's my console output:

Vocola version 2.8.5 starting...

natlinkmain started from C:\NatLink\NatLink\MacroSystem\core:

  NatLink version: 4.1papa

  DNS version: 13

  Python version: 27

  Windows Version: 8or10

2.8.6 looks interesting and I keep meaning to install it, but haven't yet.

Lunis,

Windows Speech Recognition (WSR) used to be able to run the in command mode back with windows XP. However, it's not possible anymore with Windows 7 and Windows 10.

Just FYI.

Right now, I have Windows 10, DNS 13 Pro, and Vocola 2 works. But I've been using DNS only for 1.5 years, and I'm on my first Dragon license.

I know I will have to make the switch in the future, so I'm trying to learn Knowbrainer.

Is it all of Vocola 2 that doesn't work on Dragon 15, or just the continuous commands?

Chuck,

Thanks for the FYI

chpla,

We believe that Nuance developers accidentally disabled Vocola by preventing it from hooking into Dragon 15. This might have something to do with the new Deep Learning speech engine but we are only guessing.

No, that's wrong, and making wild guesses about Vocola, as you have been doing recently, doesn't help either.

Hooking into Dragon 15 via NatLink still works, basically, and a limited set of functionality is still available. However, one specific interface/method at least doesn't work any longer which unfortunately is fundamental to the most part of NatLink, and this is why NatLink has become non-functional in DPI 15.

At this point, not all hope is lost yet, although chances are very small, and there is no guarantee anyway. But the same holds true for any other third-party solution which may easily be broken in any future release of Dragon one way or the other.

With regards to continuous command recognition, KnowBrainer is not an option, and it doesn't add to the scope of command functionality which is built-in also, so keep that in mind when considering switching.

Thanks everyone for the discussion.

chpla: which version of Natlink/Vocola did you install? (It's listed in the "messages from python macros" window that comes up when you launch Vocola.)

chpla and Alexander: did you encounter any problems during the installation of Natlink Vocola?
