Hi!

I do not have Dragon but have been thinking about purchasing it for a long time. What is the general consensus in terms of Microsot buying Nuance? I am torn between waiting (I already have been for a long time) or buying something that could be unsupported in potentially a short timeframe.

Thanks,

Matt.

It really depends on what you want to use Dragon for.

Since you have been waiting for so long without buying Dragon it seems to me that you don't rely on SR (like some ppl with handicaps do) and your pain of having to type instead of dictating seems to be pretty low as well.

If you decide that SR is a tool that can help you in your daily life, then I'd say: Go and buy Dragon now (one of the cheaper editions will probably do for you) and don't think about the future. It's pretty unlikely that Windows will change so drastically that Dragon will not work at all with a future version, even without updates. So it's an investment for a long time.

For Dragon Professional/Legal there are no known plans to discontinue those products at the moment (unlike the officially dying/dead DMPE), so we'll probably see support and updates for at least 2-3 more years.

What happens after that, no one can tell for sure.

Hi Mav,

Thanks, that helps a lot. I don't need it, but it would certainly make life easier due to the RSI that I get. I have an old v14 Professional cd, so I will update that .

Thanks,

Matt.

                    Welcome (See Mission Statement)

When Microsoft purchases an application or company, it usually takes a hands-off approach for the 1st year. We would be very surprised if there are any changes applied to DPI 15.61  (we include complimentary installation/training manual). However, we believe Microsoft's Nuance purchase is a good for all of us

In our opinion, if you have a reason to use speech recognition and waiting, you are losing  productivity. There is always going to be a newer version of Dragon or a computer chip just around the corner. You can wait forever or bite the bullet now.

We concur with Mav. You can bet your bottom dollar that standard versions of Dragon will fully support Microsoft Edge, Word, Excel, Outlook and a few others. You have workarounds, right here, for non-Dragon friendly applications so in our opinion, this isn't something you need to worry about such

Hi Lunis,

Thanks for taking the time to respond to me. I will probably go ahead when I have the money and get v15! I will definitely put it to good use, as it's not fun typing with RSI.

Thanks,

Matt

If you want to stay on the fence but want to start using dictation, and v14 isn't working for you, you could use Windows dictation (on Windows 10, press Windows + H) or Lilyspeech for free. You don't have the same kind of control for switching between windows and clicking around, but they are good for basic speech to text.

Thanks Wristofdoom,

I had never heard of LilySpeech but holy smokes - it looks fantastic. Excited to give it a try tonight. Appreciate the tip!

LilySpeech is not a speech recognition utility. It is a text-to-speech reader

I heard that Microsoft are planning to retire their desktop office apps in the next few years and move totally to the cloud. If this happens, does anyone know what that might mean for Dragon users?.

Microsoft is unquestionably pushing cloud computing but don't bet on it. The Internet isn't full-time available to everyone and it would be tricky making cloud programs Dragon friendly.
