Beyond creating temporary downloads on another server, there wasn't much work on my part. It was Marc, our webmaster, who worked day and night. Apparently the RAID controller blew out, took out both hard drives (one automatic backup) and the entire server in the end. Amazon offers a blazing fast backup system but the restore system doesn't seem to be much faster than 300 baud circa 1994. It took over 4 days to trickle in the backup but we are finally back.  Our apologies for taking so long

Now what took down the "RAID controller", if disclosing doesn't violate any "NDA"?

Redmond's complimentary software upgrade?  7-year-old hardware?  Misdeed from Axis of No Good Countries?  EMP-zapping UFO?  The last entity has been garnering some attention of late.

I am afraid they are going to come after my mission-critical fax modem next ...

No NDA but we are not qualified to answer this question. Having made that disclaimer... We think the server just gave up the ghost. We should also point out that we are using 2 refurbished servers which typically run about $5000 versus a new server that runs $15,000-$21,000.

For showing up day in and day out - all holidays included.  For those of us who have to work for a living, showing up consistently is indeed half the battle.

For demonstrating resiliency by getting this forum back up whenever it was down.  These days, the hospital admins in the city sprinkle "resiliency" into literally every other utterance like an incantation ...

I am inactive on FB, but do live on WhatsApp (partly for collegial communication expediency).  Next to desktop WhatsApp (never mind the invalidity of the comparison), the interface of this website seems as "old-school" as this forum compares to Usenet of yore (on which I cut my online teeth back in the 1990s ... my current dentures are clearly unfit for the likes of twitter, tiktok and similar diabolicals).

Well, rickety or not, here is to Lunis, other regulars, and to 2022!
