When I run check microphone I get the following error message: (Thinkpad x201 Win 10 64 bit DMPE4 8 gig, 500 gig ssdi)

"The sound system you selected is not responding Try selecting a different one, or check to make sure that no other application such as Dragon, is accessing the sound system "

At that point I can't go further. The mike is an old version of Speechware Tablemike 3-in 1. It does work on another similar laptop with DMPE2 that I temporarily installed.  I could not get it working by creating a new profile. I tried switching to the internal mics, same response.

Not sure wherre to go next

Any help would be appreciated

Hi!

Could be that you have a security feature of Windows 10 blocking desktop applications from accessing the microphone.

Click on your start button and start typing "microphone". You shoud see a link leading to the microphone privacy settings. Make sure that desktop applications are allowed to access the microphone there.

 

Another problem we found is that some antivirus applications tend to block applications from opening the microphone, sometimes even without any notification for the user (here's looking at you, Kaspersky!).

Thank you for replying.  Most of the stuff under "mcrophone" seemsto relate to Microsoft Apeech and Cortana. I wonder if these are competing with Dragon s/w.  Draagonhad been working until about w weeks ago. ?notorious Microsoft update?

Yipee! I went back and turned off all of the Microsoft-specific software choices, and it worked. In fact I am dictating this note again in Dragon. Your prompt advice was wonderful. Thanks again. Michael
