I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional in a work environment. My company installed the software on my computer. They did not turn off antivirus (Cylance) during the installation, which I understand should be done. Dragon appears to be working at the moment, but is this likely to cause problems later on?

Probably not. You most likely would have noticed by now. Besides there's no reason to flag the Dragon setup files (unless they weren't genuine)

From what I understand Cylance does not display the classic pop-ups upon threat detection that regular antivirus programs do. Instead it (silently) quarantines threats. This is something to keep in mind if you ever get errors that Windows (or Dragon) cannot access certain files or when files are missing.

Thanks diligence – that's very helpful.

I've read that certain folders connected with Dragon need to be excluded from antivirus scanning in order to prevent corruption of voice profile. From what you know of cylance, do you think this could be an issue? My IT department say it won't be and don't want to exclude the relevant folders from antivirus scanning. I understand their point but I'm eager to minimise problems with Dragon as I've had a lot of problems with it in the past!

Although Cylance (just like Malwarebytes) appears to not work primarily with virus definitions/signatures but merely with detection of irregular behavior patterns which is most probably similar to Potential Unwanted Programs (PUB) detection as featured in common antivirus programs like Bitdefender and Avast I don't think it's going to corrupt Dragon user files.

That being said, Dragon user files definitely can get corrupted. Sometimes that process occurs very rapidly.

The best way to protect yourself against that is to do an immediate export right after you've created a new user profile and imported your custom voice commands and vocabulary. That way you can always quickly restore it.

Excluding Dragon folders can speed up the antiviral scan but doesn't do any harm. It is also unnecessary to close most applications and utilities, when installing Dragon. Most manufacturers make this recommendation to avoid a possible support call. While it's a good idea to close most programs, if Dragon is working now, no harm done. This should have no effect on future issues
