Let's say I want to trigger a shortcut like Shift + control + Z, which is a key combination mapped to one of my many pieces of software. How do I create that trigger within Dragon without triggering the shortcut itself?

The same goes for desktop shortcuts which might, for example, open a folder.

I'm not sure what you mean, do you want to create a voice command that presses Shift + Ctrl + z?

That's easy enough with SendKeys.

DVC scripting:

SendKeys "{Shift+Ctrl+z}"

Advanced scripting:

SendKeys "+^z"

Or you can simply say "type shift control Z"

When it comes to desktop shortcuts. You can call them with Dragon by saying their exact name preceded by either "open" or "start".

Let's say you have a desktop shortcut named "holiday pictures" the voice command would be: "open holiday pictures" or "start holiday pictures".

This works from whichever program or Explorer window you are currently working in.

I'm trying this custom command, but it is not cooperating. I must be missing something obvious.

Try changing the name of your command. Dragon has built in "save it" commands -- the same as your custom command.

Thanks @Alan Cantor - but this problem happened with Control + W and other commands. I think the problem will be visible from the screencap.

We believe Dragon already has a save document command that presses {Ctrl+s} but if this command is application-specific rather than global, try changing the name of your command and make it Advanced Scripting. Also note that KnowBrainer's VerbalBasic II can create this command 10 times faster. See following script:

Sub Main
SendKeys "^s"
End Sub

Yes, it does. You are trying to create a Step-by-Step command. Change it to using keystrokes and make it look like:

Press Ctrl + S

Thus, simply press the control key and the S key while you are in the box coming up after pressing "Insert".

I don't see anything wrong with your command. Sending Ctrl + S should save, and Ctrl + W should close a window within an application.

What happens when you run your custom commands?

Does someone have a tutorial on the exact steps for creating these commands? I'm probably missing something obvious.

The free KnowBrainer Manual includes details and videos on verbally creating commands but is nowhere near as complete as “late” Larry Allen's Scripting for Dragon.
