I’m in the market for a laptop with a 17.3” display, and I have been reading Lunis and others saying that DPI 15.xx doesn’t use the same amount of power as in the past, so that an i5 works indistinguishably from the usual i7 I’ve been getting. And it looks like a quad core is plenty, as people say that Dragon doesn’t go beyond 1 or 2. I remember reading about the various levels of caches, is there a minimum or sweet spot for L3 cache? 6 MB, 12 MB?

It looks like 16 GB RAM is the sweet spot, Dragon and many open chrome tabs are my main RAM eaters.

I will get a FHD 19K X 1080 display, is every graphics card good enough for special effects in movies? I play no games.

I’ve been reading that it’s good to keep an SSD drive half unused. So I was thinking 512 GB, along with a 1 TB hard drive. I’m going to get a subscription to a backup service like Carbonite (recommendations for better?). Or is it better just to have a single drive, which would mean a 1 TB SSD?

If I’m just a user, I will be fine with Windows 10 home, correct?

Weight is not an issue. Cost could be $1400 + if there would be productivity dividends, but it looks like laptops are plenty good $1200-$1300, like this HP envy below.

I’ve also been looking at Lenovo and Dell
