Alex, Aside from all of the valid and good advice that you're getting from other sources, including KnowBrainer, there is a major problem relative to running DNS 9.5 on Windows 7 any version (basic or otherwise). Nuance is not supporting DNS 9.5 under Windows 7 and there are some reported known issues with DNS 9.5 on the Windows 7 platform. You won't get any support from Nuance on this and it is highly unlikely that those posting on this and other forums will have or will want to experiment with this. Mike considered advice is don't do it period. If you do, I think you will be making a big, BIG, mistake. Just not worth the expense to find out it doesn't work properly. DNS 9.5 is known to have problems on Windows 7 32-bit and it is a known fact that Nuance doesn't support it on that platform. I can confirm both of those by virtue of having discussed this with the programmers (DNS) most of whom are my former colleagues when I was SDK Program Manager at L&H. I use DNS 9.5 professional, and would like to know if it will run on a mini laptop platform, like: Toshiba mini NB205-N230 Processor: Intel® Atom™ Processor N280 Operating System: Windows 7 Starter (32-bit) Memory: 1GB DDR2 533MHz memory
Thank you for your feedback.

Netbooks, which is what we're discussing here, are not well-suited to the power requirements of the DNS. Although NaturallySpeaking may actually install on this computer, you'll probably regret trying to use it because DNS will have to dip heavily into virtual memory. We don't recommend running DNS 9 with less than 3 Gb of RAM on Windows 7. In some instances, we have found that you can get away with 2 Gb of RAM but Netbooks really aren't designed for powerful applications like DNS.

While you could install and run Dragon NaturallySpeaking on the netbook you mention, I think overall you would be very disappointed by the performance. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend it.

Chuck, thank you for the candid and honest advise. Some times there aren't simple answers, better to know before launching into a frustrating and expensive experience. Regards, Alex

I think Chucker is right about not using a netbook. Walt Mossberg (Wall Street Journal) did a piece several weeks ago about lightweight laptops that weigh less than 3 pounds and are much closer to a complete notebook than any of the netbooks. He recommended the Dell Alienware M11x ($799) at 4 lbs and the Sony Vaio X. ($1299). You might also think about a MacBook Air running Windows under BootCamp. Stan Winikoff
