Doubled RAM but the usable RAM stayed the same?

Hey folks this might be a double question but I figured I'd ask! So I just had 4 GB of RAM installed (previously had 4 GB) but for some reason the amount of usable RAM did not change. Likewise, my computer performance base score went down after the install (the processor subscore) went down fairly significantly)--should I assume that the install was unsuccessful? I brought my laptop into a shop and my computer is saying that I have 8 GB of installed RAM but as previously stated the usable RAM is the same as before (3.2). I've been trying to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking and was told that I should double my RAM (and so I did) but I'm receiving the same error message and I'm assuming that's because the usable RAM did not go up (despite the additional 4 GB). Any help would be truly appreciated! Thanks ya'll!

Hi folks,

Of course the Memorial Day sales are out and I have a small window of opportunity, (before the deadline of the offer), to buy a new processor for a new desktop I'm building. I prefer Intel-based systems but I have all the components sitting around for a 500W, AMD-based system and these components are either in A+ condition or brand-new. So AMD-based it is.

I'd like to know what you think would be the best choice of these two processors when it comes to Dragon 12.5's performance: One AMD processor is a 6 core, 3.3 GHz, (FX – 6100 Zambezi), and the other is an AMD quad core, 4.2 GHz processor, (FX – 4350 Vishera).

The system will be liquid cooled and I will likely do some light overclocking on whichever one I install, (about an additional .5 GHz can be assumed).

It's the fact that one is a 6 core and will likely be running at about 3.7 or 3.8GHz, and the other is a 4 core that will likely be running at 4.7 to 4.8 that makes this choice difficult for me.

Which is better, more cores, or more speed? and then, when does more speed beat more cores or vice versa?

I thought I read someplace that Dragon will make use of as many as eight cores if available.

Thank you, Rich

If you'd like to know the rest of the system specs on this new build to help with the decision:

Windows 7 HP 64bit, Asus M5A97 Evo mobo, 8GB Ram, 500watt PSU, ATI HD 5770, Liquid Cooled. Dragon 12.5

If it helps any, my intended use for this computer is as an "alternate dictation computer" using Dragon Premium 12.5.

As a technical writer, I right user guides for Flight Sim aircraft and I have to describe the use of the switches and other options of the aircraft in relative detail. My intention is to use the AMD-based computer to dictate what I'm doing in the aircraft as I run the flight simulator program on my Intel-based system.

My main computer, (this Intel-based one), can't handle Dragon premium 12.5 and the full version of Microsoft Flight simulator X with all of its add-ons, high-resolution planes and scenery simultaneously. Even when I run my processor at 5 GHz, the two programs are just too much for it.

First, I have read the posts, and understand basic computers. I understand why more cache is better, a SSD is better, etc. What I do not have is the ability to observe how fast Dragon actually runs or doesn't run on different CPUs with different cache. Please don't waste time with rudimentary descriptions of hardware differences which were posted on other posts.

Laptop, 17", 1080p, dedicated 1 GB video card so no drain on CPU. Have SSD Samsung which will use. Two choices:

3630qm w/6mb cache with 12GB ram 1600Mhz

3820qm w/8mb cache with 16GB ram 1600Mhz for $300 more.

I will be using Dragon 8 hours a day. $300 is a significant but not massive amount of money to me.

How much faster will the 3820qm run Dragon with a large 1200 page Word file, a few web browsers, and a small dictionary program running?

I do creative writing, so maintaining a train of thought and having text pop up instantly is critical, and I often talk VERY fast. It would be great if someone could record a video of how fast words pop up on screen with a given CPU, so we could see "instantly" if they are feeling kind. And then talk fast and see Dragon try to keep up. I think having a resource like this posted, which shows video of real world performance of Dragon with different configurations, would avoid a LOT of the confusion on these posts.

Again, thanks for anyone who can help. I would rather hear from people actually using laptops who have first-hand knowledge.

I have no sense of how many resources Dragon uses, and if the extra 2M of cache even comes into play in terms of observed performance. Will 12GB vs. 16GB of ram make a difference if all I am running is Dragon, a few large word documents, and a web browser and dictionary?

Again, thanks.

Losing my mind using BestMatch IV with medium vocabulary version 12 on second-generation I5 laptop with 6 gb of ram

The title pretty much says it all. It's not really one thing in particular, it's a variety of problems. I know you're not supposed to use an i5 with Dragon if productivity is the real issue. But it does have 6 MB cache. And the latency is not my chief concern.

Here is what I'm experiencing or at least what I can remember.

1. Dragon locks up quite a bit.
2. I will start dictating the volume level indicator moves that nothing happens.
3. When I launch Notepad, even though the cursor is flashings in the text field I have to click again for dictation to be transcribed into notepad.

4 other programs are starting to lock up. Windows Explorer needs to be restarted all of the time.

I'm sure there are other issues but I cannot think of them right now.

Here's what I have tried to do to fix the problem to no avail.

1. Clean up the registry.

2 disk defragmentation.
3. Malware check
4. Accuracy tuning within Dragon.

I did not expect any of these things to be the culprit but I could not think of what else to do.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

DNS Prof 9.5 going so well until the inevitable computer failure...now I have a HP Intel Celeron 2.20GHz 4GB Ram and DNS9.0 disks not compatible for 64bit...Is the jump DNS Prof 9 to DNS Prof 12 too far for an upgrade? I'm inclined to buy 12 outright, not upgrade, but not if it's a pure waste of money.

Past experience 2006-7 with DNS Prof 8&9 led me to resurve DNS computer to off-line only and I ceased having continual problems caused by,I think,Windows updates. I replaced DNS computer last month with HP that meets DNS 12 specs(Nuance website). I recognise that much has advanced since 2007 - not least the help available online! This caution my no longer be necessary,I can conntect DNS to internet as required.

Finding KnowBrainer back then saved my sanity.DNS saved my dreams when health went south, then KnowBrainer eased the transition - to all of you thank you!

Looking for new system for portability/DNS

Hi all

Currently work in a hospital with a citrix based EMR and dragon 10.1 (now through the hospital rather than on my machine)

I would like to be able to round room to room with a lightweight tablet that would allow me to see labs, data with touchscreen ease and regularly dictate notes on the spot and on the run (currently I typically dictate in a voice recorder for later translation)

I am looking at the stylucMic7G

what I really need though is a portable computer platform; I'd like to be able to stay with windows and while I anticipate this would mostly be a dictation & EMR tool only, I want dragon to run as smooth and efficiently as possible. Most important with the stylusmic taking a usb I think, it needs to be efficient for tucking into an oversize lab coat or something, and do so without losing the link to the connection to the EMR. If it cannot fit into the coat, it has to be light enough that I don't care.

A macbook air works great for portability but everytime the clamshell is closed, it loses internet connectivity (and thus requires cumbersome re login)

Any thoughts? Reading the forum I felt this is too much to ask, although someone mentioned this http://www.dynamism.com/top-notebooks/kupa_x15.shtml which seems to be closer, but if 8gb ram is basically a necessity then it seems waiting makes more sense?

Keep in mind its a need I have 100% of the time, 6 days a week, so waiting is really painful... likewise if there are options I am all ears- and understand I am looking to max efficiency and capability and understand I may have to pay up for it.

As a comparison my lattitude e6530 runs dragon fine with a powermic 2 but carrying it around is truly cumbersome!

Thanks

A quick search on Google returned a number of options; but my purchasing decision was predicated upon the need for lots of processes power, and plenty of RAM.

<span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: "Bookman Old Style","serif"; line-height: 115%;">These two options may be of interest to readers in the UK. This first model, the Asus N56VJ-S4164H with 16 GB of RAM was my indulgence. The extra RAM makes all the difference. In fact, it is the best laptop I have ever purchased. The Bang & Olufsen Speakers + External Subwoofer, give an amazing sound. A slightly cheaper alternative, is the Asus N56VM-S4034V.

<span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: "Bookman Old Style","serif"; line-height: 115%;">However, for the first two hours of utilisation, I was absolutely tearing my hair out attempting to utilise the Windows 8 operating system. While listening to the blandishments of monkey8, to exercise forbearance with said operating system, I was ready to purchase Windows 7, and having it professionally installed the following morning. Then I came across a link to Classic Shell, allowing me to utilise/operate Windows 8 with the comfortable familiarity of the Windows 7 operating environment, and I have never looked back.

<span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: "Bookman Old Style","serif"; line-height: 115%;">Thus far, I could not be happier with my new purchase. Unquestionably, the extra RAM makes a huge difference to NaturallySpeaking. It just runs smoothly, and it's just a joy to utilise.

Hi all, I'm looking at buying a desktop to run Dragon 11.5 on and was hoping someone could give me some advice on a few options I'm looking at. I don't think I'm computer savvy enough to make a good decision myself!

At the moment I run DNS 11.5 on a laptop at home ( Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, 3GB RAM, Win XP. can't give any more info... me and the laptop are currently in different countries) and a desktop at work (i7-2600 quad core, 3.4GHz, 4GB RAM, Win7 64 bit).

I'd like to replace the laptop with a better desktop, but I'm on something of a budget. It doesn't have to be as snappy as my work desktop but I'm after something that will be closer to this than my laptop performance wise. I found a few of second-hand options that I'm interested in which have the following specs:

(1) i5 2310 CPU with 4 cores, 6M Cache, 16GB DDR3-1600, 60GB OCZ SSD Drive, 1tb Western Digital HDD, Windows 8 OEM x64 with media and key; $ 800

(2) Intel i5 650 CPU @ 3.27GHz with 2 cores, 4M Cache, Motherboard MS-7613, 4GB DDR3 RAM, Win7 (unsure if 32 or 64 bit); $500

(3) Intel Core i5 750, 8M Cache, 2.66GHz cores, 4 cores, Motherboard Gigabyte H55 chipset, hdd: 74G WD RAPTOR 10000rpm, 4G DDR3 RAMS (in duo channel), Win7 64 bit; $400

From what I can tell, the first option is a much better computer… But then it would be great to hear from someone more computer savvy. What I'm specifically interested in is

- - whether any of them will be a major improvement over my current laptop – i.e. performing more like my work desktop

- - whether there will be a practical difference in speed between the three (keeping in mind the last two are much cheaper and I can always buy more RAM for it) - and by practical I mean something that I will notice, rather than just better numbers on a benchmark test. I'm on a budget so would prefer the cheaper ones if not going to be noticeably worse

- - whether Windows 8 will cause any major problems for DNS 11.5 or for Vocola. Don't mind the odd freeze. I heard it causes problems with Internet Explorer but don't use this browser anyway.

Thank you for any advice! Really appreciate it

Jay

PS I'm not using for anything really memory-intensive... at most I might have Firefox, Excel, and Word running along with DNS at any one time.

Many people know how bad heat is for their modern electronic items and especially their laptop computers. So cooling trays are becoming very popular and for good reason. A well designed cooling tray is a great idea, but it is important to understand a few things and keep in mind that a cooling tray does no good if the laptop is not kept clean. Twice a week is not to often to clean your laptops thermal system if all you have to clean with are the cans of compressed air. These are a valuable source of quick air for cleaning but lacks the volume of air to really move all the dust and debris that gets into your laptop. M-Tech Laptops are designed so well that you can use a actual air compressor with a jet nozzle (be sure to turn the pressure down to maybe 40 PSI) if the laptop has gotten Dirty*. Blow from fan to exhaust port and then exhaust port to the fan. You cannot clean too often. It would shock you if you saw all the debris the fans suck into your laptop. This dirt acts as a insulator and traps heat. This heat slows your laptop and eventually enough dirt allows the laptop to run hot enough that is slowly harms your components on the motherboard. So go ahead and keep the cooling trays running, but it won’t help if it is blowing more dirt into a already dirty thermal exchange. Heat is the number one reason for system failures. You can clean a laptop every two weeks and eventually you will still have issues because unless you use the air compressor with its huge volume of air, the dust will build up and eventually will start to build up clots of dust that cannot be removed by any means other than opening up your laptop case and manually picking these clots out, needless to say this is the method of last resort. Cleaning your laptop twice a week can keep you from potentially harming your laptop by opening it up and perhaps damaging some part while you were attempting to clean it. Many people use the little cans of compressed air because of the convenience. M-Tech feels these are a great way to keep a laptop clean. Just keep in mind that these little cans are great for keeping a clean laptop clean but they will not clean a dirty laptop, they may buy you some time, but do not think you have cleaned the laptop if it was already dirty.

Back to cooling fans

A cooling tray has to have a couple of features or it will be useless at best and harmful in a worst case scenario.

#1: It needs to have a slotted or vented bottom (a dished out bottom works also) to allow for natural unimpeded airflow to the laptops fans. A flat laptop setting on a flat top only allows the minimal amount of air to reach the laptop. It will run this way but you are not getting any benefits from the cooler. Increase natural air flow. If you do not have a cooling tray, try placing something under the back feet of the laptop to raise it off the table top.

#2: The fans on the cooler itself should blow up into the laptop, not pull air away from the laptop bottom. No exceptions! Pulling air from the laptop will starve the laptop for air and may ruin your laptops own fans because of the need to fight the air flow direction.

M-Tech’s R&D tested 28 cooling trays before we found one that was actually cooling the laptop. At M-Tech Laptops, we feel that if you follow the two points above you will have a good cooling tray. If for no other reason that it allows you to not worry about where you are setting the laptop down each time you quit using it. Many people place the laptop on their laps and the fabric of your clothes will block your fans. Then if you get up to answer a phone or get something from the frig and you set the laptop down on the couch, bed carpet etc.. These places and situations all block the fan rapidly increasing internal heat and it will also deposit micro debris into the laptop from these types of surfaces.

*The air compressor works the best in M-Tech Laptops but other brands are not built sturdy enough to safely use this method. Only do this on a M-Tech laptop not other brands until you seek their advice on how best to clean other brand of laptop. Many laptops do not have apparent fan air intake ports. Since they run lower performance CPU’s and GPU’s, other manufacturers try to get away from placing decent and costly cooling systems into their laptops. None the less, all electronics need to be kept clean. Contact your manufacturer for their specific instructions on how to clean the laptops. If you cannot contact them, then at least use the cans of compressed air and blow into every opening you can find. Never open the case unless you have training or have been instructed on how to do it from your laptops support representative.

Upgraded Systems for DNS 12.5

Back in July, 2012 I had a new system built for me with power to handle DNS. My post from then describing it is below for reference.

This month I upgraded that system by replacing the Intel Core i7 2600K with an Intel 3770K and actually dropped the memory by 8 MB to 16 MB. My what an improvement in DNS performance. The speed and accuracy are much better. I had chosen the 2600K to save a couple hundred dollars but the performance suffered.

LESSON: Don't skimp on the processor to save a little money! The amount saved was less than one hour of billable time as an attorney. The time expended in making corrections has been much more than one hour!

However, I've used the 2600K in a new computer with specs just down a notch from the one below for use in my home office for emails, Internet reading, and other business use that does not require the higher performance. With 16 GB (8 from the office computer), SSD C drive, etc. this is still an excellent computer for the intended usage.

Thanks again for all the great posts here that guided my latest systems designs.

Here's my post from last July -

Just a brief update on my final configuration on the computer built by my local computer builder for about $2,400 including taxes.

Coolmaster 900 w PSU - Coolmaster Chassis - Asus P8Z68-V/Gen3 LGA 1155 Motherboard Intel - Core i7-2600K 3.4 Ghz 1155 - 24 GB DDR3 1600 Memory - 256 GB SSD as boot drive - 2 WD 500GB 6GB/sec drives - 22X DVDRW/CD-RW /SATA

Now I'm running DNS v. 11.5 Professional with KnowBrainer with SpeechWare 3-in-1 TableMike with outstanding speed and accuracy. I'm so glad I've ungraded to this screamer and that I've got the SSD boot drive with all my programs. I've added VoicePower and trying to increase my use of both KB and VP for both dictation and computer control in my law practice - but I have a lot to learn.

My sincere thanks each of you who took time to read my prior posts and offered insightful comments and suggestions - or did so by your prior posts to others that I studied. You contributed so much to my successful upgrade. "Much obliged, pardna!"

I have two laptop computers. If I go to a certain website in IE that shows images to buy, there is a small tab at the corner of the image where you can click to enlarge it. With my old computer, this works fine and the image is enlarged. On my new computer, if I click the enlarge tab, you think the image is going to enlarge but all that shows is a white square and a rotating circle as if it's going to enlarge but never does.

Would anybody know if this is a setting that needs to be altered in Internet Explorer for the image to enlarge? If so, could somebody please tell me how to do it?

I started with a document that was an attachment in my email. I downloaded the attachment and began modifying it. I made several changes to the document, making sure to save often.

I had two documents on my screen the one that I had downloaded and was working on and another downloaded attachment that I was using for supplementary information. Dragon mistakenly interpreted my breathing or moving of my head and all of a sudden something happened and the document I was modifying closed.

I have tried searching my documents using the document name I think it was saved under but I was only able to find a very old version of the document. Any advice on what I can do would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I checked of the side pain that contains recently worked on documents that have not been saved yet. None of those documents were what I was looking for.

EDIT: I ordered the Dell XPS One 27 as a business customer which means I'll be dealing with North American support people. We'll see. I have 21 days to return it if I need to.

----------------------------------

My desktop computer is 3.5 years old. I usually replace it every three years, but wanted to wait until Win 8 had been out a while. Now it's acting wonky, so I dare not wait much longer.

I'll be downsizing to a smaller home before another three years is up, will be getting rid of my massive L-shaped desk, so I need to ditch the tower (have to put the tower on the desk due to massive pet hair). I also have a laptop, but that's only for certain software applications. Don't want to downsize to just one computer.

The only all-in-one that has the specs I need re # of USB ports, HDMI in/out, etc., is the Sony Vaio L series 24". I can customize it like this (and request that all the crapware be removed prior to shipment):

3rd gen Intel® Core™ i7-3630QM quad-core processor (2.40GHz / 3.40GHz with Turbo Boost)
OR
3rd gen Intel® Core™ i7-3740QM quad-core processor (2.70GHz / 3.70GHz with Turbo Boost) - [an additional $320]

16GB (8GBx2) DDR3-1600MHz

NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M dedicated graphics card [or spend $75 less and go with the Intel HD Graphics 4000]

1TB hard drive @ 7200 rpm -OR- 256 GB SSD [additional $430 for the SSD]

There's also the Dell XPS One which you can get with a 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3770s processor and 16GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1600Mhz, but it's a 27" display, which is overkill as I use a second monitor, and has a resolution so high I'd probably need a magnifying glass to read things. Plus, I don't trust Dell. Lots of bad reviews about hardware failure and poor customer service/support right on their website.

In addition to Dragon, I also use my computer for photo and video editing. I don't need fast rendering - I can let the computer do that while I do other things - just need to get the job done.

Will I be disappointed with the Sony? My current computer is a first gen i7 @ 2.67 with 12GB of RAM. It seemed pretty darn fast when I first got it.

Also, is the i7-3740QM worth the extra $320?

Thanks!

I try to click on the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon before I eject a flash drive but many times I get an error message telling me "Device is currently in use". When I go to Windows Task Manager (on the Applications tab), I don't see a thing open but I still get the error message that the "device is currently in use" and just end up shutting down the machine to remove the flash drive "safely".

Am I missing something and do I need to look someplace else to shut down everything so I can safely remove the flash drive or:

1. If I don't see anything in the Windows Task Manager under the Applications Tab, can I take the flash drive out of the computer "safely" even if Windows is telling me the "Device is still in use"?

2. If I'm not reading or writing to the flash drive, does it really make any difference if I use the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" to try to eject it?

3. Is there another way to eject the flash drive safely?

(See attached)

Oh, I am also using Diskeeper but I have successfully ejected the flash drive before without doing anything in that program...

In an earlier posting, I believe last summer, Chucker was strongly recommending that a buyer wanting an Ultrabook wait until the end of last year, or first of this year, to purchase. I believe he indicated that he expected that by then, vendors should have an Ultrabook with 16 or more gigs of memory, an 8 Mb cache, and Sandy Bridge processor.

I haven't seen an Ultrabook with those specs come out for sale. On the other hand, I've seen other postings whereby folks seem to be happy with lesser machines.

My question is this: Is the recommendation still to wait for the holy grail described above, or should I give in and get (1) an Ultrabook with lesser capabilities (if so, which one is recommended and with what lesser specs); or (2) a heavier computer that meets the specs set forth above (if so, which one is recommended?).

While light weight is always nice, I don't travel that much and could probably make do with a heavier machine if I had to.

I first loaded DNS 12 Home shortly after it was released in October 2012. Initially it was running on the Windows 8. It's been running up until about five days ago when it started to load it extremely slowly, anywhere up to 20 minutes or longer. Reinstalling the software made no difference. Because I have been having a lot of unrelated issues with Windows 8, yesterday I did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional. DNS 12 was also given a clean install and I did not try to transfer my profile over.

Here is the strange thing, it is still taking a very long time to come up sometimes between 10 or even 30 minutes. But then on other occasions it will just open up like it always did. The only thing I can think of is that when DNS loads does it need to talk to the Nuance server and could there be a delay there.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. It's been going well for nearly 6 months so what's gone wrong?

Robert…

After balancing the compromises in specs v. weight in a laptop, I decided to buy a more powerful desktop which will be primarily devoted to using DNS Pro 12 and a few other less resource intensive programs.

I would appreciate some guidance in setting up the desktop.

How can I make the best use of an SSD (which I have yet to buy) in the desktop?

Desktop specs include:

HP Compaq Elite 8300

500gb 7200 rpm HDD

16gb ram (I could install up to 32, if you recommend more)

Win 7 Pro 64

intel i7 3770 (not K); Q77 Chipset, 8mb cache (nope, I don't know if its level 3, as there was no description, but the price was nice at $790 incl delivery, no tax + $ for the extra Crucial ram I installed to bring it up to 16).

Plenty of Bays for expansion

Specifically, what should I install on the SSD and how? Should I keep the operating system on the HDD? Should I simply use Crucial's software to clone the HDD onto the SSD, and then format the HDD and use the HDD for document storage?

I didn't buy the SSD yet, so I would welcome any recommendations. I was planning to install a Crucial m4, 256gb.

Thanks again to the pros on this forum.

First, I would like it to help me speedily transfer my vast collection of handwritten notes to text in Word via speech.

Second, I would like to be able to carry around a digital recording device that I can later attach to my computer and have that speech turned into text in Word.

That’s it. I don’t need the latest version, or all the features. In fact, would prefer be able to customize the installation so as not to complicate my computer with features I won’t be using. And, I don’t want to spend any more money than necessary.

I am currently using Vista, but may be buying a new laptop soon. I currently have a USB microphone.

What DNS version would you suggest? What additional hardware (input mic, digital recording device) would you suggest?

Thank you. I appreciate your help very much.

hi

I am planning to purchase a laptop. Many of these new laptops have a combo microphone/headphones jack. I looked at the following splitter which can separate the microphone and headphone jacks:

http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-MUYHSMFF-Headset-Splitter-Adapter/dp/B004SP0WAQ/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_2

Would it be same using this adapter as having a laptop with separate microphone and headphone? I know we normally use USB adapters and this wouldn't matter but still I want to keep the option?

Thanks

Will this possible new Dell computer speed up Dragon Pro 12

Hi, Im, currently Using Dragon professional 12 BestMatch V medium vocabulary.

With my current Dell Computer, Dragon is simply too slow. I can't run

KnowBrainer unless I am willing to sit and wait and wait for text to appear. Without KnowBrainer dictation of text is somewhat slow but acceptable. However, things are much too slow when I try and use commands. For example, a few days ago I opened up 2 Microsoft Word files. One of them was 70 pages of text while the other was two pages of text. (Also had Internet Explorer open in the background; have turned off commands for it and other several other programs.) Using NaturallySpeaking to switch between the two open windows of Microsoft Word 2007was slow. Also very slow was the execution of commands that were built into NaturallySpeaking such as "PageDown". I found myself repeatedly using my hands to get simple commands done. (I have created only four or five of my own commands and none of them involve lists.) Dragon NaturallySpeaking accurately recognized the commands that I said, but it took a long time for the name of the command to appear in the recognition box and for the command to be executed.

I am considering purchasing a new Dell Computer that operates at a faster speed with a third-generation i7 processor. The listed speed of up to 3.9 GHz for the new unit isn't that much faster than the listed speed of my current unit, but I presume other factors may greatly speed up Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I'm a senior citizen on a fixed budget and don't want to spend the money unless it's reasonable to expect quite a bit faster execution of commands. (Even if I did not have to watch my expenditures, the thought of switching from Windows 7 to Windows 8 would be somewhat daunting.) The work I want to do often requires having open several Microsoft Word files, Internet Explorer, and sometimes other programs.

I'll appreciate any thoughts people may have about the possible performance differences between my current unit and the proposed new Dell unit. Many thanks.

My laptop has begun restarting itself for no apparent reason… I’ll be working in the middle of something and then it just reboots. I usually have Word 2010 up along with VP and sometimes KB. I also run SpeechStart but the issue was occurring long before I installed that. As a matter of fact, I can't really pin the time that this issue started to any new program installation or removal...

I run PerfectRegisty 2.0 usually once a week and will do the Properties/Tools/Error Checking/Disk Check for the hard disk once a week as well but the computer will still from time to time just reboot on it’s own. (I had also updated the BIOS as there was a “critical” update that was posted several weeks ago but the rebooting issue has been occurring before I updated the BIOS.)

This probably isn’t doing my User Profile any good being right in the middle of something and having everything reboot without my saving it first...

I have a Satellite P775-S7320 and my WI-FI has stopped working. Internet connections can be made with an Ethernet cord attached. WI-FI on the laptop worked a few days ago but now, nothing. (I normally use an Ethernet connection at work but yesterday, unplugged it and WI-FI wouldn't work even though it had worked just fine in the past in that location as well as home and other locations).

Summary:

1.<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> Internet access works with Ethernet cord attached so internet is working fine.

2.<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> Tried the F8 Internet switch… nothing happened - WI-FI service was not restored.

Over the past 6 weeks, I have had two Lenovo Edge E430 laptops. Both kept flashing "thermal sensing error". Lenovo suggested replacing the first. The replacement came yesterday and has the identical error. When I requested complete refunds, they readily agreed.

I suspect they are aware of faulty fans or heat sinks. But, no more Lenovo for me (unless you can give a strong thumbs up on another model).

My dilemma is that there aren't many choices for 13-14" laptops with Core i7 Quad processors that will use 16 GB of ram with a Non-glare screen.

Can the experts on this board recommend an alternative (Win 7 pro, 64); and whether or not I can get excellent DNS 12 results with less than a quad core?

For what its worth, I was very happy with the E430's performance- it was great.

Are AMD Quad Core Processors a viable low-budget alternative to Intel's i5 and i7 series for intended use with DNS 12 Premium?

I have been looking at a £250 desktop computer with the following specifications:

I'm planning to build a new small form factor desktop (literally) for my office. The microATX MoBo's that have USB3 and SATA 6GB/s seem to only handle AMD chips up to 95W; the current AMD 8-core 8100-8300 series CPU's are all 125W. I'm using AMD, because I don't need maximum computing power on several programs at once. DNS is by far the most demanding program this box will run.So, I just noticed today:

AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.1GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Core Desktop Processor FD6300WMHKBOX

32 nm Vishera 95W

8MB L3 Cache

3 x 2MB L2 Cache

at Newegg.

This build will include 2X4 Gb memory and Win7 Pro 64-bit, of course. I'm going to install DNS 11DMPE (have been scared off 'til now by my older current computer and the DMPE horror stories). ??Should this be a reasonably resposive machine with DNS11 DMPE?? With DNS12??

I'm a new voicewriting student looking for advice on a new laptop. I have been using DNS 11.5 on my desktop for a couple weeks and will eventually use Eclipse. I want to get a laptop and begin working on it.

In fact, a couple days ago I bought an HP ProBook 4540s running Windows 7 Professional (64-bit), with 8GB RAM and 750 GB hard drive. I haven't opened it yet and could return it. I was told by an Eclipse expert that what I bought will be fine. The only drawback I see is that it's pretty big and heavy, but the smaller ones I've seen are running Windows 8, and I'm told that only DNS 12 is officially compatible with Windows 8.

Do you think I should just stay with the large HP laptop I bought? Any reason to reconsider and get a smaller computer running Windows 8? My first priority is that the software runs smoothly; smaller and lighter computer is a "nice to have," but definitely a secondary consideration. Thanks for your thoughts.

The KUPA Windows 8 tablet was unveiled at CES and I have one on order for delivery in March. This German made machine is getting the DNS users very close to a small form factor and completely portable "Dictaphone" for DNS.

This machine is a harbinger of machines that several manufacturers alluded to in their statements of direction at CES. If these manufacurers deliver, similiar machines should be widely available next year by Christmas at a price point of $900 to $1000 using the next release of Intel low-energy mobile i7-xxxx processors.

The KUPA tablet is 1.8 pounds wiith the i7-3517U processor, 8GB memory and full graphics capability on the touchscreen. It also has built in 3G/4GLTE which is crucial for me since I can't use client networks onsite. I currently have a similiarly spec'ed Sony Windows 8 touch screen machine with the same size screen but it is a little more than twice the weight.

I am not recommending anyone else buy this and if I didn't have a specific project for this I would wait to see the follow-on machines.

The info is at the link

USB 1.1?

I have an environment at our hospital that uses USB 1.1 ports on the end points, which sends data via CAT5 to a "blade" in a server room where the processor/RAM/motherboard/etc are live.

The Philips SpeechMike seems to be fine most of the time, but it goes through stretches where it is very slow, inaccurate, and the cursor jumps all around the screen. I think there are a few factors causing this, but one I am curious about is USB 1.1.

What is the general opinion on using USB 1.1 with a DNS microphone? Is that a major factor in these issues? Minor?

I thought this was a good idea until someone mentioned today that having everything else on the I: drive could cause conflict.
Can anyone tell me if this setup really will cause any problems in the future, I was particularly thinking of files etc defaulting to the C drive, when I want everything (apart from Windows 7 and Dragon) I use to go on the - I: drive. Obviously I can install any new programs to the I: drive?
The SSD drive was recommended to me for putting Windows 7 on as it is so fast, and I thought I'd add Dragon as well because this is the most important application I use.
Otherwise, I usually only use my PC for writing, music, emails and browsing the web.

So, specifically, I am interested to see if anyone has any experiences with Asus desk top computers. I have been looking at the Asus CM 6870-US-3AD set up. Specs seem to be all I was looking for, including being able to get it with Windows 7, and it appears to be a good price--right at $800.

Currently I am running a computer with XP, which I just upgraded to 2 GB of RAM.

Any input/opinions would would be greatly appreciated.

Jerry Michrina was gracious enough to allow us to post the following warning which we received from M-Tech today about the use of Google Chrome, Symantec security software and Kapersky antivirus software in computers. We are posting Jerry's warning in its entirety below:

M-Tech has seen an increase in the number of people who are experiencing periods of poor performance. While overall slow speed quite often is the cause of subpar quality computers, we are specifically talking about people who had a computer whose speed was known and then suddenly seems much slower or suffering more frequent crashes. We are not referring to the like new speed of one computer vs. another brand.

Lately we seem to have a rash of people who are saying that their laptops are becoming slow. Upon investigation the laptops seem to run fine all the time except when certain programs or environments are duplicated. The latest addition to the ever increasing list of reasons is the Google Chrome web browser. We have decided to place an alert on this program. Until a resolution has been found we think users of this browser should uninstall Chrome. Wherefore complaints that some web pages take minutes for the handshaking to complete and certain programs seem to crash if Google Chrome is in the background running.

I thought to see if this was a fluke with one or two customers and did not even have to look past the first hit on (of all search engines) Google.

Rule of Thumb: If you are running in Windows and suddenly experience a slow down, crash or freeze, it is software/files/setting causing the issue. Computers have a double POST making it unlikely that any critical component is bad if you can boot into windows. The minor exception could be Blue Screens, which can be the result of bad memory.

The Google Chrome issue has just recently come up on our radar. Other issues that continue to plague all computer users (all brands not just M-Tech)

Norton has been and likely always will be nearly as malware like as the programs it protects you from. At this point we have no reason to assume the Kapersky issue won't be fixed in the future, time will tell.]

[It seems like changes to the latest versions of DNS 12 from Nuance reports the personal file created is getting corrupt more often if the users are using HDD vs. SSD. We don't know for sure why but we do know that there are a number of differences between the two drives that could allow for some very reasonable explanations as to why the HDD is more than just slower, if the new versions call on files or post them in a certain way it would not be unlikely to have corruptions. Not to mention that fact that HDD's can corrupt any file at any time because of the nature of the technology.

If you read the small print you will see that these companies will sell out your unused drive space and CPU time when you are least likely to be using your laptop. While not a Trojan (because you agreed to this program and all its features) these can still at best slow you down because your Internet bandwidth is being used up as well as your computers resources. Companies like Apple make every effort to sell this time and resource sharing to responsible companies who just need the extra computing power and internet connections. However, far too many of these file management programs sell out your computer to un-reputable sources who do not want to be Blacklisted because they violated federal SPAM guidelines. So they make your computer at risk for Blacklisting and of course if you use the computer at the same time your speed will be very slow. M-Tech recommends that you not use these programs. When you want to download that MP3 or ACC just do a direct save to your Music folder on your drive. You can set up any number of ways to organize your downloads so you have quick and easy access to your music.

Users should be reminded that every Anti Virus and Spyware programs as well as Firewalls will introduce some delay and slowness to any computer. As shown, some are far worse than others. Our favorite AV is Avast, but about years ago we saw AVAST cause so much of a a slow down that it made the computer unusable. Fortunately, Avast fixed this issue within the week. Since then we really like AVAST for our customers. There are a number of good and free AV utilities that don’t not cause painful delays.

The reason for this post is because education on this subject for computer users will help them to know the difference between a hardware issue and a software issue. If the computer runs, it is likely that over 98% of your issue is software related. As mentioned most computers will not pass POST and allow the Windows OS to boot up.

We tell our customers to think of it like their TV. If the TV show is terrible you don’t call the TV manufacturer for support, you call the networks. If the TV show is weak and your screen has snow, you don’t call the TV manufacturer for help; you check your signal source. If the TV is faulty it won't turn on.

Same with computers, yet there are still a few too many people who need to be brought up to speed on what a computer problem really is. This will allow for faster fixes of the real issue and will even save many customers a lot of money. M-Tech has sold a lot of computers to consumers who assumed their old laptop was no good because if had gotten so much slower than it originally was. We make sure to tell them that if the computer used to be fast then all they really need is a good reformatting and reinstallation of their programs. We really like Windows 7s "system Image" feature. Once you have all your programs in place, make an Image of the C: drive. Every 9 to 12 months you should restore to this image. Your computer will run like new. Western Digital says that every 9 to 12 months your computer will be 20 to 25% slower just due to file corruptions that happen as part of a daily process on hard disk drive. Imagine how much slower your computer is when you factor in all the variable threats out in the wild, everything from Virus' to malwares and Trojans and spywares and worm and all those other hostile codes.

Hello Friends,

My current setup has resulted in fairly satisfactory results with speech rec. However, I have been looking forward to upgrading my whole set-up to enjoy greater performance with dragon.

I am looking to go all out on the below, and hope it will serve me well for at least 4 years. I would appreciate any general feedback, and responses to my further specific questions below.

Lenovo Thinkpad 530
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;">Intel Core i7-3820QM Processor
16 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (2 DIMM)

1. Do solid state harddrives in any way support the perfomance of dragon better than one with moving parts? And if so would a 16GB mSATA Solid State Cache micro hard drive provide this advantage without needing to spend the extra for a full SSD?

2. Win 7 / Win8? Which would you most recommend for use with DNS 12

3. Since I already have DNS 11.0 - is it possible to just upgrade to DNS 12, or would I need to buy DNS 12 outright? And the same Q. concerining KB 2011 and upgrading to the latest version.

4. Which other manufacturers offer international, onsite next day, accidental damage warranty besides lenovo? Could anybody recomend a different similar spec machine for less but still with these same qualities in the warranty? This particular machine totals at around $2000.

I very much appreciate all feedback.

Regards,

I need to use DNS due to problems with my fingers. I also have poor eyesight, which I work around now with large screens and an iPad that I can use my fingers to expand the screen (saw a Lenovo Yoga that does that).

Am hoping to persuade the disability folks to provide me with a machine, DNS 12, and maybe training so that I can continue to work.

I have years of software experience, mostly with Office, Word and web apps.

What kind of configuration would you suggest in a new laptop? I'd like to provide my own system when seeking new clients (that's why laptop instead of desktop).

Would appreciate the forum's advice. Used DNS briefly at Chevron, and it was excellent for dictation.

Thanks~

I have heard that DNS works better on a PC than on Mac. Is this true?

I am thinking of going with a top-of-the-line new Mac. My PC is an HP laptop that is about four years old, and so I definitely will have more memory and power with the new Mac.
