But now with version 12/12.5 I have to revert back to "wake up", but now that does not even work.

When I upgraded from Home 11 to version 12 I lost everything I had trained and added. I thought perhaps I had done something wrong, but someone on the Nuance forum told me that this is a big drawback to the Home edition, so when they come out with the next new version I will lose all my work again.

He recommended that I upgrade to Premium, which he says doesn't have that drawback. I would like to verify that if I buy premium 12 I won't lose my work when it is upgraded to new full number versions - is he right about that? (I never rely on input from just one person, especially in forums ).

I find that I can get Premium 12 on Amazon for about $95. Does anyone know where I can get a price better than $95, or is that the best I'm likely to do?

Is there a way to automatically transfer text from a Windows virtual machine to a Mac host?

I'm aware of the Mac transitioning discussion running here (http://www.knowbrainer.com/forums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=7&threadid=14694&enterthread=y), but after wasting a few of my and my clients hours with DragonDictate (which is good when it works, but is buggy like you wouldn't believe), I am looking for a better way to integrate Dragon for Windows running in a virtual machine with a Mac host.

So: here's the deal

Short version:

I'm looking a for a way to transfer the text from a Windows program to the Mac host with a voice command. Or a hotkey.

Long version:

I'm looking for a solution to transfer text created with Dragon Medical - or any other Dragon version for that matter - in a Parallels virtual machine to a Mac-based EMR.

There are a few possibilities I have explored:

Copy and paste text from a Windows virtual machine window to a Mac host window.

I can get Dragon to copy text via Dictation Box or any other voice command, but I can't get it to switch to Mac and paste it there. The text is present on the Mac clipboard, but But apparently keyboard presses done with Advanced Scripting (using the Windows-tab-hotkey with keyboard events) do not switch to Mac.

Using the dictation box in Coherence Mode.

I wasn't able to. Again, the text is present in the Mac's clipboard, but it doesn't paste the dictation box's contents into the desired application.

Looking for a macro that would monitor the clipboard for change and paste the clipboard's contents automatically to the EMR.

I haven't found anything yet, but I keep looking.

Alternatively, does VMWare Fusion offer a better integration of Dragon NaturallySpeaking with Mac?

If you have any experience doing something like this, I'd appreciate your input.

Thanks and regards,

I have Dragon home version 12. At this point is working pretty well and I find it increasingly invaluable! I am disabledand unable to type, and Dragon is like a miracle to me!

There are two things that happened repeatedly, however, and I hope that you can give me some insight.

Firstly, and it is difficult for me not to personify Dragon NaturallySpeaking, but in the morning it seems to take time to "wake up" and get acclimated. It usually will not let me right in the body of email and often recognition is poor. I usually have to restart my computer once or twice before proceeding. Am I right in figuring that it has to "limber up" in the morning?

The other thing that seems to be happening often is that the cursor will "skip around" and I often and up writing in a different paragraph then I am intending and don't always catch the mistake. Why is this happening? Is anyone else having a similar problem. I am very careful to avoid touching my mouse, so I don't think that could be the problem.

You have been very very helpful in the past and I am very impressed with the knowbrainer site, I'm hoping that you can give me some more "words of wisdom".

I just started using Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 11.5 in April. My problem is that the application freezes up at least once a day and I have to do a reboot to get to work again. So far I've found no consistency in why it should lock up.

I'm running Windows Vista SP2 with 4 GB of RAM. We've put in for a replacement PC that will be running Windows 7 and starting out with 4 GB of RAM. Other forums have suggested using as much as 16 GB of RAM but I think that must be overkill. Perhaps 8 GB is sufficient?

I'm wondering if other users have experienced the same problem with Windows Vista and if upgrading to Windows 7 with more RAM has solved the issue. Any hints, thoughts, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I believe the application has great potential but right now I'm finding it very frustrating.

Since upgrading to version 12 and then 12.5 (Pro), I have had a few spoken forms relating, in particular, to units of measure that no longer work properly. They all worked perfectly well in versions 11/11.5. On the other hand, there are other spoken forms which do work as well as they used to.

Generally, the spoken form appears. I correct it, and for the next instance of the same "error", the correct form may or may not come up as a correction option. Interestingly (and a frustratingly) if I dictate the the words into the Vocabulary Editor, it will often come up in the form I want! In version 11/11.5, I would define something train it, and it would work.

I have tried the following in various combinations and permutations:

enabling and disabling units of measure in the formatting options

defining them as alternate forms, both with the option to use before/after numbers checked and unchecked

defining both a spoken form an alternate form at the same time

training and retraining them, especially after correction

creating a new profile (done this a few times to troubleshoot a host of other problems with v12/12.5 - please don't suggest this, I will not do it again)

complete uninstall using a tool from the Nuance support, and reinstall

I have my dictation and correction workflow fairly well worked out, but these are words that I use fairly often, and it has become time-consuming to have to correct them every time.

Some of the problematic words are (with "units of measure" disabled in the formatting options):

mM - millimoles per litre
mg/mmol - milligrams per millimole
½ - a half
¼ - a quarter
/L - per litre
g/day - grams per day

Other words which have continued to work properly:

µM - micromoles per litre
pM - picomoles per litre
nM - nanomoles per litre
mU/L - milliunits per litre

I really don't want to try redefining the problematic words with spoken forms that I don't use in my everyday language (such as millimolars for mM); when I am dictating I really need to concentrate on my message not how I am saying it.

Thanks in advance for your considered help.

Via Windows Task Manager I noticed a memory leak in "audiodg.exe", I'm working on fixing it through Microsoft's technical forums. It appears to have something to do with Creative's X-Fi audio cards. I use an Andrea USB Soundpod, so the soundcard shouldn't have anything to do with it?

Whilst in "Task Manager" I also noticed that I have a memory leak in NatSpeak.exe. Memory only leaks when the microphone is either on or asleep and not when the microphone is off.

Together these two programs can chew up gigabytes worth of memory in a day, so obviously I'd like to fix it.

Questions are… Are they related, so if I fix "audiodg.exe" the NaturallySpeaking problem will go away?
Or is the NatSpeak memory leak a known issue and therefore a fix has been worked out? (I checked the forums and found nothing). I guess it could be a virus/malware, but I scan for those everyday.

Where to start chasing this down?

Over the weekend I installed the 12.5 patch. Before that, I exported my custom vocabs into both txt and xml formats. I did a bunch of cleanup on them. Then I installed 12.5 and created a new voice model b/c I knew my other had corruptions in it. It is a detailed process I went through that may not affect this question, so I won't go into it. But, when I got to the point of doing the Import custom list and opened one of the XML files that I had exported, it causes Dragon to completely shut down without any type of error message whatsoever.

This is trying to import in the new profile and not the old one that has some corruption in it. Any ideas? Has anyone tried doing this in 12.5 yet to see if they get the same results?

Thanks.

The 2 big reviews I will look forward to are:

1) the knowbrainer review

2) Mark (MDH)

Cant wait. If its anything like V12 premium then it must be good.V11 was good........but then there were problems. Ive got the UK med version and I can't fault it, but reckon with the V12 engine that it might be quite good.

Mark if you can do a first date/second date with DMPE(v12) etc that would be cool as we were able to work out over time what your feelings were with V11.

Lunis as always will look forward to the KB review. It can't be long now for Med 12. Maybe 8 weeks at the most

I support the usage of Dragon Medical Enterprise (and now Dragon Medical 10.1) for our Pathology Department, which uses the commercial CoPathPlus pathology system. The CoPathPlus system uses PowerBuilder to provide its user interface and Word as its text editor.

The CoPathPlus windows have a tab interface as well as labeled buttons and a windows-like menu bar.

We have used successfully used Windows XP Pro for years and are now in the process of switching to Windows 7.

In the past, with previous version of Dragon Medical and CoPathPlus, we have been able to say the label of the tabs shown in the CoPathPlus windows and Dragon clicks the tab.

With the latest version of CoPathPlus, Office 2010, Dragon Medical 10.1 and Windows XP, this capability continues. Saying the Tab label clicks the Tab in CoPathPlus.

All of the above programs are supposed to be compatible with Windows 7.

I have recently received a test Windows 7 PC with the same versions of the above programs, and I have found that Dragon now no longer clicks the CoPathPlus tabs when their label name is uttered. Instead, Dragon sends the uttered text to the CoPathPlus application.

As far as I know, the only change is that now the above suite of programs is running on Windows 7 instead of Windows XP.

Does anyone know have any ideas why Dragon Medical 10.1 now does not “see” the tab names in the PowerBuilder application window (CoPathPlus) when running under Windows 7 rather than Windows XP?

This is significant to my suite of Dragon macros, since some of them use the Heardword command to click particular Tabs. Now those Heardword commands don’t work.

Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks.

Yesterday, Adobe made their expected announcement about the upgrade to Creative Suite, following their annual upgrade cycle of recent years. The announcement was that there will be no more outright purchase perpetual licence versions of Adobe Creative Suite. For now, Creative Suite 6 (released a year ago) will remain on sale and will receive security updates.

In recent years, there's been a dual model for the Creative Suite applications - outright purchase or subscription. From now on, Adobe are only going to take the CS applications - now renamed CC - forwards on the subscription Creative Cloud model. The Creative Cloud pricing is roughly in line with the recent prices for a one-off upgrade of Creative Suite Master Collection this year, but has steadily risen since first introduced. Once customers start to use CC only features, they're locked into paying if they want access to their files, so Adobe can hike the price considerably, especially as they have few competitors (there are alternatives for desktop publishing, video and sound work, but nobody else has such an all-encompassing offering). I believe Creative Cloud is an 'all or nothing' product - you cannot subscribe to just PhotoShop at a lower price, for example, which will lock out many 'prosumers' who have historically bought one or two Creative Suite applications.

I've no idea whether Acrobat and Lightroom will remain available as standalone products, or whether Acrobat XI and Lightroom 4 are the last outright purchase versions.

I detest subscription software. I can see the attraction, in that the company has a steady revenue stream, the up-front cost is lower and customers always have the latest version (which may be incrementally upgraded, rather than a big new version every year or two). Any copies of subscription software found on sale must be pirated.

The main problem with subscription software is that you lose access to the software when you stop paying. This is more an issue with something like Creative Cloud, where you lose access to your files in the CC file formats when you stop paying, than with something like Dragon NaturallySpeaking, which isn't the gatekeeper to any of your data. There's also accounting issues for companies, which may or may not be positive: purchased software is an asset, whilst subscription software is a service.

There seems to be a steady move to dual model (subscription and outright purchase) for desktop software, followed by the outright purchase option being dropped. Mindjet (formerly MindManager) went dual model then onto an outrageously expensive subscription. Microsoft Office is now dual model, but I wonder if Office 2013 is the last outright purchase edition of Office. Microsoft developer tools, server versions of Windows and Microsoft server applications are dual model, as the choice is between outright purchase and licence arrangements - but in most cases the subscription option is the only one that makes economic sense because you have very limited upgrade options outside an ongoing licence with upgrades included. If desktop Windows moves towards smaller incremental updates, as seems possible with talk of Windows 8.1 being released this summer, it may go to a de-facto subscription model (like Mac OS X, where each update is relatively inexpensive, but software and peripheral vendors drop support for older OS versions fairly quickly).

I'm not trying to give Nuance ideas, but I wonder if the professional editions of the next version of Dragon will go subscription only - including the yet to be released Medical edition of Dragon 12.

I have already boycotted Mindjet - I don't get enough value from their product to pay the outrageous sum asked. I've yet to find a replacement that meets my requirements amongst other outright purchase or free software, but my existing perpetual licence version is fine for now. I suspect I'll eventually lose the ability to use their cloud storage, which will also stop me using their Android app, but I can live with that. Most of my mind maps are too large to use effectively on a phone or tablet anyway. Once I finish my degree, I won't mind too much if I lose access to my existing suite of maps.

I shall boycott Adobe for as long as possible. Now that I'm freed from having to upgrade each year to keep my upgrade entitlement active, I see no reason to start paying and start creating files I can't access with software I own. I may upgrade my standalone copy of Acrobat to a perpetual Acrobat XI Pro licence.

Creative Suite 6 does everything I need at the moment, and will work on Windows 7 and 8. It will be compatibility that will likely force my hand in the end - Adobe don't update obsolete versions of Camera Raw for new cameras, so once I upgrade my digital SLR to a camera that isn't supported by the Creative Suite 6 / Lightroom 4 version of Camera Raw, I will likely have to upgrade. At some point in the future, a new version of Windows will break Creative Suite 6, but it will only be viable to keep using Windows 8 for a few years because of an eventual lack of Windows 8 drivers for new hardware.

I fully expect Adobe to drop compatibility options in the CC applications - removing options to save files compatible with older versions of their applications, and stop issuing updates to the free DNG converter (which allows you to convert files from newer cameras to an intermediate that older versions of Camera Raw will understand).

What do others think? Is subscription software a positive development, or do others fear being locked into paying to retain access to your files as much as I do? As many users with more complex needs on limited budgets rely on the Advanced Scripting features of the Professional edition of Dragon NaturallySpeaking to use their computers, I can foresee major issues with access to computing if professional editions of Dragon go subscription only.

If the move to expensive subscription software continues, I can see many home users boycotting Windows completely. With an external keyboard, and simple word processor and spreadsheet apps, a 10 inch tablet will suffice for many users. If the majority of your use is web and social media, you don't need a Windows machine any more.

All,

Wordpress is one of my favorite platforms. I use it for my blog, and one of the reasons I choose to do so is that the core development team has a commitment to making their platform accessibile. Recently I conducted a usability test for the WordPress Accessibility team. A key feature of a usability test is to have the user narrate their experience. As such, I used a switch to control the microphone rather than "go to sleep" -- didn't want to disrupt the video with extra voice commands.

There's not a lot of context here. Since usability tests are about stream of consciousness, I'm rarely precise in desribing the on-screen interaction. But if you've ever wanted a video of a Dragon user on the web, here's one.

There may be more bits to come, or the whole hour long test might be released. Please let me know if you're going to reproduce or repurpose it, and if you're going to share please link back to my blog or this thread.

Isn't it maddening to be kept waiting for Dragon to finish typing before you can move the cursor to correct its errors? Dragon is trying to insert text at the point where the cursor is, instead of where the cursor was. Yet it is straightforward programming to separate those two locations. Let's say it is just for DragonPad, with the microphone keyed to off.

The audio file has time markers in it, so it is straightforward to calculate exactly when a syllable was spoken. At the same time it is routine programming to record a new position of the cursor and the exact time when you clicked its new position. So these are two separate locations -- the moving position where Dragon is typing its carefully considered dictation, and the other where you are busy punching at the keyboard to edit the existing text.

It is true that any editing you do while you're waiting for Dragon to get on with its job can change the character map. However it is again routine programming for Dragon to repeatedly access the character map for any updates.

Similarly Dragon could be left to continue with its output while you go off to check your email, for example. We don't want to be kept waiting by a tool we should be able to take for granted. It is supposed to speed up our work, not delay it. What do you think?

(I have 16 GB RAM, 2 procs at 2.66 GHz, bluetooth mike, DNS for about six years, now version 12.5, and I am working on both Win7 and Win8 machines)

Question #1. In the command to select a field I say "box". What often comes up is a dialogue asking if I would like the secure version of the web-page or the unsecure version, "yes" or "no". If I choose "yes", I get a written form of the numbers Choose 1" -"Choose X " with a box around it that often obscures the website itself. If I choose "no", which I almost always do, because I just get the little number surrounded by a little box that is colored red or green and is usually beside the box I want to choose.

Is there anyway to make Dragon always choose "no"?

Question #2. I often have the command "Page Down" not employ because it hears "-based sound" or "base down". Now I know my voice is often uninteligable, yet Dragon understands me most of the time. In this instance, it does not and I often need to turn to using the keyboard, which is quite difficult for me.

Does anybody have an idea on why this is happening and how to fix it, other than the obvious 'Dragon is just not understanding you'?
