Best way to improve copy editing skills for a job interview?

Here is my situation. I'm a recent graduate, I've been looking for a job for a while. I suspect that I will be receiving a second interview for a position that I would be a great fit for. The one problem is that the position involves copy editing and I have been told it will be part of the second interview.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can improve my copyediting skills over the next few days? I know that I cannot become a master copy editor in such a short period of time but, I will take any bit of improvement I can get.

I have done some googling but it really has not provided me with anything worthwhile. I figured this forum would be the perfect place to find advice because so many people here use Dragon to help with the writing process.

Any advice would be appreciated. If anyone has any ideas on how to address my lackluster skills during the interview I would be open to hearing that as well.

I have had intermittent problems with dragon, and recently uninstalled and reinstalled DNS 11.5.

Hi all,

I'm new here, so please forgive me if this question has been asked multiple times. I have not found a thread for this.

I need help figuring out if it is possible to "convert" an MP3, MP4 or .wav file to text. I have been manually transcribing (good old foot pedal version) these files and would really like to free up some time. These are podcasts and class lectures that I have recorded. So the voices are not my own, but multiple people. The audio quality on most is relatively average. I don't mind editing the text, but would like to know if there is a way to save time by uploading the audio file I already have into some software or system. As long as it's relatively reliable, that's probably better than my current system. I have been doing a lot of Google searches lately and it looks like unless it's my own voice I'm out of luck. Does anyone here know of something different?

Thanks so much!

I have been using the "Getting Things Done" productivity/workflow system by David Allen for a year or so. I find it really helps me stay organized and keep my ideas from wandering away unfinished. But I'm challenged to find a platform that allows me to execute this system without hurting my hands. I can't type and I can't really press more than a few buttons on my iPhone, and I can write for maybe about 15 minutes at a time before I need to stop.

Up until now, I've been using Outlook for email related things, an old-fashioned paper calendar, and a little notebook. I'm now finding that the notebook where I put all my tasks and projects, is becoming too taxing on my hands and arms. Any recommendations for capturing notes and ideas on the go hands-free, as well as any specific organizational tools that you found helpful that are hands-free?

Thanks,
Dan

Lots of Questions! Could Really Use Some Help.

I will try to be as brief as possible with this, because there is a lot of info I need to give in order to receive the help necessary!

Basically, I am trying to find a speech to text solution that will work for me. I am in a rather difficult situation in that I am disabled, but the government (United States) refuses to recognize it. I am on my third appeal, but the grounds for dismissal of my disability claim is that all of my medical records disagree with the government doctors findings. This doctor, very literally, didnt even look at me during the single exam (she was staring at the ceiling the entire time, which I still find very strange). She also took no imaging (xrays, MRI, etc). So, despite all medical records showing otherwise, I am not considered disabled.

My issue is that I have severe early onset osteoporosis, which has resulted in breaking my hip (twice in the last year), and several vertabrae in my back along with herniations in other areas. The stress from this has precipitated into epilepsy as well. Obviously, there is a lot more to the story, but to the point;

I am looking for something that I can use without being limited to which software packages I can use it with. The most important being the Adobe Suite (mainly dreamweaver). There is SO much information out there, that even after weeks of study, I still feel completely lost.

I plan on using a programmable pad (Logitech G13) in conjunction with the speech to text software to hopefully bring in some sort of income so I can continue my much needed treatment (we still do not know what is wrong, I am 28). I also am in dire need of income so I can get a service dog. Moving my hands laterally (even the slight movement needed for typing) is very, very painful after about thirty minutes total in one day.

I would also like it to work with things like video games. As far as I know, it seems that the Dragon software is the closest fit, but I cant find anything that says how "open" the software is to being used with programs like Adobe Dreamweaver much less something like Guild Wars 2.

I am hoping to get back to as normal of a life as possible. But, to do so, I need the speech to text software to work with Dreamweaver (I am a website designer, amongst many other hats I wear).

What software is out there that will work with dreamweaver specifically? I plan on using the G13 pad for specific commands and commonly used cuts. For content, I plan on using some type of speech to text software, but cant find any information on how well this will work. I am very comfortable with computers and programming, so even doing something myself isnt too out of the question, as long as I can do it with the speech to text software itself. My limit of typing in one sitting is about the length of this post (roughly five minutes, I type at ~100wpm).

I can answer any questions that are needed to help you help me. Is there anything out there that can fit my needs? I am essentially looking for speech to text software that will simply input what I say into -ANY- text box I select, in ANY program I use. I do not need it to serve the functionality of a mouse, or open programs, or anything like that. Just put what I say into any text box I have selected, regardless of program or software package (though Dreamweaver CS5 is the important one). I am very limited on funds as well, so some multi thousand dollar custom software and system is not possible.

Thank you in advance. And apologies if this seems disjointed, I am trying to cover as much ground as possible!

Hi,

My name is Lyanne and I study Graphic Design at the art academy in Utrecht. Currently, i am doing my final exam. For this I started a research on silence and the different effects that silence can have on people.

During my research I discovered that in the typography we currently have, you can not read silence. There are of course comma's, wordspaces, returns, but not much more than that. And that while using silence you can cause many good effects like creating a focuspoint and let people think about what they just have heard or read, this makes them being able to remember and comprehend the person telling the story. The speeches of Obama are a good example of this. He plays his audience with the silences that he drops into his story.

What I would like to do for my graduation project is to make sure that these silences that people use during a speech, also are readable in typography. My question therefore is if its possible to dictate silences. So if, for example, if there is three seconds of silence, I connect these seconds to a character.

Hi,

A long time agoo (in a previous life, somewhere in the early 199?) I bought the Belgian Lernout & Hauspie VoiceXPress which worked extremely well for the Dutch language. I also downloaded the free Software Development Kits (SDK) 4.5 and 4.52. I developped different text-to-speech and voice-recognition applications in Visual Basic (VB). The SDK itself (or VB) was very unstable but when it runs it work a 100%. Unfortunately it only operates on Win98.

So I contacted Nuance for a development kit. You have to sign a non-disclosure agreement plus pay a 4500 dollar for the development kit.

I discovered that Virtual PC 2007 supports a virtual Win98 machine and runs well on WinXP/Win7 and Win8. My speech applications also run fairly well on these virtual machines.

Now I would like to (re-)develop the applications in my favourite development language C++ (Borland Builder 5). Using the serial port as a communication channel. So received plain ASCII text received by the comport is spoken out and recognized spoken text is send through the serial port.

Unfortunately the ActiveX interface (to be able to develop in C++) seems not to work as it should. The documentation also is not up to date.

My question is: is anybody else interrested in speech applications, C++ and L&H?

Just let me know,

Thanks

SimSim : A Low power Synthesizable Speech Recognition Core

Speech based MMI (Man Machine Interface) is becoming a reality in everyday devices.
Though the technology has great potential for enhancing user experience, it hasn’t been
able to gain due traction because of heavy processing power requirement and power
consumption.

To address these issues we at 3iLogic-Designs are pleased to introduce
a Synthesizable HW solution for speech recognition. Being an end-to-end solution this
one of a kind IP can offload the entire speech recognition task leaving very little to the host
processor resulting in a very small foot-print and power optimized solution for localized Speech
recognition in embedded systems making truly “Always Listening” systems a reality.

The solution is FPGA proven and is also well suited to make FPGA based speech recognition systems with fast time to market.

We have posted a demo video at youtube

Microsoft SR Macros vs Dragon 12 Premium Macros

What is the differance between MS SR Macros and Dragon 12 Premium Macros? ( I am using Windows 8)

I want to learn SR and or use macros for voice command in Windows 8.

First, I don't understand the difference on using MS SR or Dragon 12 Premium SR by themselves to voice command the PC or why I would need to use Macros for this at all.

( I assume using Macros is easier or creates a shortcutted streamlined way to set up voice command but I don't know if thats a fact)

That said, If I do need to use Macros, whats the difference between the functionality / limitations between Microsoft's marco's and Dragon 12 premiums macros?

I am looking to set up voice command and incorperate some type of avaitar, be it a chat bot or Rainmeter theme such as the popular Jarvis theme and or have some type of limited AI such as Alice incorperated if possible. I don't know that either MS SR, Dragon 12 Premium or the Macros features of either program can help me with this at all - but I'm on a fact finding mission.

I do not use Knowbrainer software.. don't even know what that is, but I joind here because it said it was the best SR forum on the net.

Greetings,

I'm curious if anybody has any experience using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12 premium and KnowBrainer 2012 revision D where the main system drive, the entire drive is encrypted? Currently, I'm using BitLocker full disk encryption without TPM (using a USB with startup key code). It would also be interested if anybody is using DiskCryptor which does transparent encryption which if I recall correctly engages the upper filters instead of the lower filters.

Reason I am asking is that I installed KnowBrainer 2012 revision D this afternoon and encountered quite a bit more CPU usage than noted with the earlier version of revision B. I was suspicious, so I suspended BitLocker (a feature which is available in the control panel for BitLocker where one can suspend or decrypt the drive) I uninstalled revision D. Rebooted back into the main system drive, suspended firewall and anti-malware activity and Malwarebytes, proceeded to do a repair on Dragon NaturallySpeaking premium 12 SP1, rebooted The noted suspensions above, repaired office installation then rebooted. Reinstalled KnowBrainer 2012 revision D. Unsuspended the BitLocker encryption and I did notice is the CPU out put was back to normal (nominal output) closer to the prior state I had founded after installing KnowBrainer 2012 revision B with BitLocker not suspended.

If anybody else uses encryption noticed anything such as what I'm describing or had any difficulties with encryption disks? Any checklists from anyone using encryption would be appreciated.

Prior to final notation, have also experienced mild hanging with the DNS premium 12 and KnowBrainer 2012 with Malwarebytes installed. This disappeared after I put both program folders in the exclusion section of Malwarebytes.

Postscript, the crucial M4 solid-state drive has provided me with considerable speed gains in both speech recognition processing and video audio etc. stuff that I work on. I suspect anyone with a machine older than two years (even I should have taken my machine into a technician for SSD install) may experience some complications more than what I encountered ( the ACHI drivers for installation) even though I've read in some sections that they're not needed. I would have an expereinced person save me some headache installing the solid-state drive, and not have to do multiple drive reimaging headaches.

Sincerely, David

I am attempting to investigate for my local museum and archives if a speech recognition programme, such as Dragon, would be a useful tool for us to use.

We are gathering a small team of volunteer interviewers to gather the memories of residents in the community who were here in the 70's & 80's. Information our archives are sadly lacking.

I am toying with the thought of having the interviewers tape record the interview and then repeat what is heard on the tape into Dragon, or from notes.

Nuance website is dramatically positive about Dragon, but I am looking for advice here. I understand that it takes time for Dragon to learn a single person's speech patterns. How easy is it for it to unlearn and learn a new voice? Thinking that after 6 months or so we may have some volunteer turnover.

Thinking too of installing on a laptop, for portability, but should it be pc or mac? Currently searching availability of grant money for this community project which if we are succesful would enable us to purchase more Dragon's and laptops. There is a bit of urgency on this as the people we are trying to interview are in their 70's now and many are having to leave the community to be closer to medical services and family.

All your comments, suggestions, how to's, versions, hardware will be most appreciated.

With Dragon NaturallySpeaking, the advice was always given that one should speak in complete sentences or at least long phrases to capitalize on the program's ability to use context to help decipher what one is saying versus being totally dependent upon just the acoustic model.

Does Siri, Dictation (as built in to iOS6) and the Dragon Dictation app on an iPad all work the same way in that if one can speak in sentences or at least phrases, the recognition accuracy should be better than if one just dictates "word by word" or two or so words at a time?
I know that Dragon 360 medical uses LDAP to direct a user to their own profile, and makes optimization and backups possible without locking a profile. So this seems like it would be a good fit.

We've been told since forever that humanoid accuracy in VR was imminent. With quad cores and the like the Singularity surely can't be far off. Before forums as this likely are redundant could you clear up something which has long perplexed me.

I regard the original Dragon Dictate (Windows) as, in its time and place, the most powerful program written. Ignoring specific applications and mind -sets what I mean is, it touched humanity's consciousness.
The strongpoint was the underlying scripting language. However this contained a 'flaw'. The 'Listenfromgroup' command did not natively implement itself. It required a workaround. Even more oddly, even though there may have been a technical solution, my own solution came about through sheer tenacity. Countless computers ALWAYS required the same procedure. When implemented however its effect was transformational. I even used it to 'cull' potential VR candidates because as I'm sure you and others realise not everyone's style suits voice.

The question remains. Why did Dragon (the Bakers?) nobble such a powerful feature -or did they have a vendetta against Oceanic Australia?

Thnx in anticipation. PS: I realise the deal of effort that you and others invested in the 'advancement' of Naturally Speaking. Please regard me as an elderly relative locked in the past (you likely do anyhow) and humour me. Resist the temptation to digress into areas (like continuous speech) obviously beyond my ken.

I recently graduated from a state university last August. I started my job search last November. I use a power wheelchair and Dragon NaturallySpeaking to avoid typing. Those are the only accommodation/different things I would need when compared to the typical job searcher.

I have had a few decent interviews and some interviews I would call "interesting" I can't say for certain that my wheelchair had anything to do with it but, I can't say for certain that it didn't either.

I would appreciate any job advice Anyone Would Be Able to Throw My Way. Whether It Be Looking for a Job with a Disability, Dealing with a Disability or looking for a job in general.

I've installed DMPE 11 on a Windows 2008 R2 Standard on Terminal Server mode (Remote Desktop). As I peruse around the possible menus I stumbled upon an error whenever I click on "Read text to improve accuracy":

"The program can't start because ctxsmcapi.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

I attempted to google ctxsmcapi.dll but could not get relevant results but only about from Citrix's SDK installation has this dll file when installed.

Now, I don;t use Citrix, this is pure Windows with Remote Desktop services enabled. Why is DMPE complaining about a Citrix component ? Is it because their (DMPE) developer was using their DMPE installation on a Citrix Terminal server (instead of Windows native Terminal server) and has compiled DMPE 11 with it ?

Has anyone seen this problem before ? Please let me know.

(I did search for this on KB, I thought it would be in one of the forums!)

I Google searched for "best tablets with voice recognition", etc. for a while, with mixed results, mostly no clear results.

I find especially this summer, I'm going to need portability on a computer, but I can't even text without arm consequences.

My guess is that the best speech recognition out there is some app (android being the best?) where you dictate into a box and then you have to transfer it over.

I also researched, or tried to, "best styluses with tablets". Nothing really clear there either. My fear is that with a lot of tapping on the screen, no, I won't be able to use it. Like, I read on here somewhere, the technology hasn't caught up yet. :-O

I have looked up keyboard shortcuts which are very useful but many of them require the user to press the Windows key in conjunction with one or more keys. So I'm looking for a voice command to press that key using DNS 10.1 Professional.

Also, I have a Toshiba satellite laptop and it has several keys on the keyboard for useful functions such as muting sound and I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is any way to "train" DNS to press these keys verbally.
