Quick Reply busted?

KnowBrainer tech support,

When I try to use the "quick reply" function, I get an error message upon submission that says "Message from Webpage: Message Titles must be between 1 and 255 characters long."

The "Quick Reply" has no title function. I think there's been a logic error here.

I need to know how to get back to a private message that I looked at today. After reading the message I went to another website and when I came back to the KB forum my message seems to have disappeared.

Is there a way to retrieve it?

Accessing "knowbrainer" forum

When I navigate to the knowbrainer forums, the knowbrainer forum is right at the top of the list, but after I login, it says I don't have access to the page I requested then when I click okay, the list of forums is different with Private Topics at the top.

The reason I wanted the knowbrainer forum was to find out why my Go to Website doesn't work.

Website does not work well when zoomed in

The new website layout does not work well when internet explorer is set to a zoom level higher then default. I can't read the right side of the text in posts. Even when I hide the left bar, it still does not work. Also the horizontal bar is missing.

Sharing Macros

As of yet, there's only one useful macro which is the popular Find Mouse Position in XML format. While XML isn't required, it is preferred. Please feel free to share and upload your favorite macros. In the future, we will attempt to keep all of those killer macros in one place so that they are easy to find.

Where do I find the URL for a specific post?

I have not figured out where to find the specific URL to an individual post so that I can refer to that specific post and paste that URL into a forum reply. every time I've tried it so far I end up with the URL to the entire thread of messages and not the specific message.

Perhaps I'm just using the wrong browser as I noticed that different browsers will render the forum differently. Where should I look?

When reading a multipage posts, unless I'm missing something, to go to page 2, etc., you have to scroll back to the top of the screen to click for the next page.

I suggest those links should also be at the bottom.

Knowbrainer Forums in Firefox and Feeddemon

The new forum is fine if I enter directly from Firefox (version 14 or 15). However, it fails to display properly in Feeddemon and shows only the left and top menus if I link from Feeddemon to any specific posting. The central part of the window in such links is black, with a Fusetalk error message "ERROR: The page you were accessing requires variables to be passed to it.

Error Code: 100 "

Effectively, I am unable to use Feeddemon as an RSS reader in this forum (and it is the only one of many that I follow). I think you have a problem - not my setup. Please fix it.

Signature problem

Hi folks, I have attempted at least seven different times to update my signature section which contains the version of DNS I'm using along with my system specifications.

When I tried to simply replace the motherboard and processor information within the signature that was there a dialogue box opened and said that I had exceeded the number of characters permitted. (Frankly, I have no idea how I managed to put all that information that is presently in the signature box there in the first place because it definitely exceeds 255 characters).

So I rewrote the entire signature with a total of 200 characters and once again when I clicked on the update button a box opened up stating that I had exceeded the 255 character limit. The following is what I have been trying to place into the signature box:

DNS premium 11.5

Corsair Carbide Series 500 R, Asrock Z 77 Extreme 4, 8 GB Ram 2x4, (Corsair 1666 MHz), OCZ 700w PSU, i7 2600K 3.4 GHz, ATI Radeon HD 5770, CPU cooling with Corsair H100, Windows 7 HP 64-bit

It was getting particularly frustrating because each time it failed, it would also remove the additional changes and updates I made on the same form. Please let me know what I can do about this. Even though it's not that big of a deal I'm sure you know the signature can help others quickly realize what system and version of DNS I have at a glance in order to help me.

Password problem

The first time I connected to the revamped Knowbrainer website, I found that it did not recognise my existing password for my username.
"ERROR: your login credentials were invalid" is the message.

So I clicked on "Forgot login details", a new one was sent to my e-mail address, and I logged in successfully with it. I carefully kept a record of it. Next time I logged in, with my username and the new password, same story. And the next time, and the next time, ad nauseam.

What must I do to get the website to retain my password? There is no prompt that says you have to change the artificially generated password.

Unable to update profile

I updated my profile and when I tried to save the changes, I received a message saying that my username has unallowed special characters--presumably the period after my initial. Apparently the period was acceptable in the old website, but is not okay in the new one. Is there any way to update my username? Or should I create a new user?

Phew what a performance.

I have been unable to access http://www.knowbrainer.com for months. IE 9 comes up the message "website not found" when I put it in the address bar. Same thing happens if I try to pick it up Google or Bing search. The network support contractor at work told me blithely that it is because the site is using multiple addresses or some such reason. (They are uninterested in helping as I am the only person at work needing to access Knowbrainer.) That was months ago. Every now and then I check, because I figure I cannot be the only person in the world with this problem so maybe it's been solved, but there's no change.

With this borrowed 3G card it's fine.

I used to check up on Knowbrainer frequently from work so I want to be able to access the site. Please spell out in really simple language what changes I need to make to my PC settings and whether any network settings/group policies need to be relaxed or otherwise changed on my PC for me to be able to connecting from the office.

Inserting images in Signature and changing background colour

Possible RSS feed improvements

The new forums look great! One request: the RSS feeds for the individual forums are not including the date of each posting, which makes it difficult for RSS readers to properly include new items and exclude old ones. For example:

New Forums

At approximately 6 pm (EDT) we shut down the old KnowBrainer forums and, roughly three and half hourse later, launched the new forums you're seeing now. The old messages, threads, user records, etc. were moved over to these new forums. This has been a long process and there will likely be some bugs that we will work out over the next few days.

For those that are curious, we migrated to a new forum application as the existing KnowBrainer forums application was no longer supported from the developer and we were experiencing bandwidth/scaling issues with the application. The new application is more robust and has a few more features. A few features, such as 'posts since last visit' are missing and we will look to add these as soon as possible.

A list of topic tags is displayed at the bottom of the 'Create Topic' form but it's not clear how they work. There doesn't seem to be a way to select individual tags, even a new one which you add to the list, and the list of topic tags is very diverse. Are all the topic tags listed used for the current topic?

KnowBrainer Pending Service Outage - Please Read

Please be advised that the KnowBrainer website will be offline starting Friday, February 10th at 5pm Pacific / 8pm Eastern. Services should be restored by early Saturday (the 11th) morning. However, we are also updating our DNS (Domain Name System - not Dragon Naturally Speaking) records with a new IP address. It may take a while for that DNS record change to propagate to servers across the Web, so the site may appear to be offline until Sunday or even Monday (depending on how long your local ISP caching DNS records).

So why the change? Well here is the deal: we are moving our hosting facility. Orcutt Labs hosts the KnowBrainer website, but the hosting has been an in-house operation. As a result, we haven't been able to offer all of the redundancy that other facilities can offer. With the facility change, we'll be collocating all of our servers, including the KnowBrainer servers, to a new facility. The new facility has redundant cooling, redundant power, and is fed by six ISP Internet backbones. We will be using a large range of new IP addresses that will be broadcasted (BGP) across all six ISPs so a failure of any ISP will have no effect on our services.

Ultimately this will yield much-improved reliability for all of our Websites, including KnowBrainer.

Search Function Deficiencies

The search function has a "Search Again" button if one is not satisfied with the search results. If I edit the search in the box which shows the query, and click "Search Again", the button is numb and nothing happen. It is necessary to return to start and the beginning by going to the "Search" link at the top of the page. So the illusory button should be eliminated.

Also, the Search results are displayed in reverse date order, but there is drop down arrow at the top of the Search results which gives a purported option to sort by relevance. However, if I choose the sort order to change to relevance, it also does nothing and is non-functional. So that illusory purported option should also be eliminated.

The last time that I logged in to the forums, I changed my login info, so I thought. Today I had to login with the old info and tried to change it again. The Registration Details window froze after I clicked Update, so I refreshed and had the same problems, again by clicking KnowBr4ain Speech Recognition Forums > My Options > Registration Detail.

Forum Systems Upgrade Notice

Everyone, please be advised that the KnowBrainer website will be offline for several hours this weekend (Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th) - the exact time hasn't been set yet. The reason for the shutdown is an upgrade to the ColdFusion application server software. This is a stepping stone so that we can later, in a few weeks, release new forum software for all of you. The bad news is that this will change the user interface and functionality of the forums. The good news is that this will change the user interface and functionality of the forums. It just depends on how you look at it...

The new forums, powered by software from FuseTalk are meant to eliminate several problems we currently face, as well as add new functionality. First and foremost, we're adding basic functionality that has been oddly missing for some time, such as the ability to preview your posting before it is actually posted, improving the RSS and Section 508 compliance, etc. Also, the FuseTalk forums will add powerful documentation and email functionality. New email services will add features such as the ability to respond to a post via email, with your e-mailed reponse posted into the forums. The new documentation feature allows the integration of blogs and wikis. This allows forum administrators to post new (or move existing) information into areas other than forum postings, provide better information and documentation support for everything from notices about what is going on the speech recognition world, to online documentation and knowledge base of KnowBrainer products.

These new forums will take several weeks to launch as we migrate all of the existing user accounts and postings from these forums to the new forums and as we allocate time for testing. A cursory review shows that we shouldn't be losing any functionality from the migration to the new forums and, instead, should be solving some long term problems that have plagued these forums (including slow responsiveness and complete server crashes).

I was doing a search for the Buddy G7 pod external USB sound card. When I did a search for Buddy G7, nothing came up. When I did a search for Buddy I got all kinds of Buddy results for November of 2010 but no Buddy G7. I later discovered that in the main NaturallySpeaking Speech Recognition forum page, someone had posted a question about the Buddy G7 on 2/11/2011, which never showed up in my search results.

Trouble Using Internet Explorer to Post

I am having trouble using the dictation box with Internet Explorer to post in this forum. When I try to transfer nothing goes across and it is not stored on the clipboard for pasting so it is lost. I also can't enter anything into the quick search facility via voice. I also have the same problem when trying to transfer instant messages into Facebook. All the above works with Firefox so I was just wondering is there anything I can do.

Suggestion: title of the thread in the page title of the browser

It would be helpful if the title of the thread was also in the page title browser. This is the default for many forms on the web, and I believe it is built into most forum software. Currently it only displays "KnowBrainer forums". this might actually help for SEO purposes as well.

This is important if people want to collect resources and topics can save them in their favorites folders. I actually left an active forums on the Internet I was heavily involved in, because this was eliminated. The extra keyboard work and the pain involved because of my disability made it not worth the time if I have to relabel every single bookmark/favorite.

How to select from forum drop-down list

I know that this is rather obtuse of me having been a member of this forum for so long but I would like to know how to navigate the forum drop-down lists by voice. I can of course make a selection using the mouse and I presume that with using MouseGrid commands I can ultimately hone in on the selection, but I was wondering if there was a simple way of doing it purely by voice.

Topic search problem

I am having a problem with the topic search function when trying to search between a date range.

When entering a date range the search results in the first page and the drop-down list also shows a number of pages.

However, when selecting the next page it does not go to the next page but goes to the forum home page.

Is this problem unique to my particular situation and set up or is there a problem with the webpage search function for a date range?

Problems with Forum website

I am experiencing problems with the forum website and taking an inordinately long time to fully display the webpage.

For example, the forum home page does not display at all initially even though it says it has downloaded (done)

In the case of the forum posting page the menu bar only arrives several seconds after the page has appeared and only then is it select and say enabled.

Pages at other website locations seem to appear normally.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem or is it because I am so far away?

Navigation in IE 8

Up until this point in time I have not really made use of voice commands to navigate around webpages in IE 8.

I have had a sudden change in circumstances that has temporarily limited my dexterity with my hand and I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction regarding navigation within webpages and providing explanations of what the various commands will do.

I am aware of the command click link and to select them from the numbers provided. My problem is how to select links on pages that are not highlighted.

IE8 64 bit and Adobe Flash Player

I had problems with IE8 running on my WIN7 64bit system suddenly not working properly and the next thing was that I was running IE8 64 bit version.

The problem now is that Adobe Flash Player is still playing catch up as far as a 64 bit version is concerned with the result that each time I open this forum's web page it keeps asking me to install the Adobe Flash Player Installer, which obviously does not work. The web page also no longer displays properly.

My question is how can I revert back to the 32bit version of IE8 or how can I uninstall/repair IE8?
