I am shopping for a new laptop. I am leaning toward a Dell XPS 17 which has USB-C only ports. How are people connecting USB-3 microphones to USB-C? Anything to look out for? Does it work well to simply use an adapter?

Do you know if there are noticeable recognition differences between using a USB sound card dongle directly into a port on a laptop, vs a USB-C dongle, vs a docking station? In other words the more remote the connection the more problematic or it does not really matter? I suspect few have tested this. I just don't want to spend a ton of money and then it does not work well.

I started using Dragon Pro at version 3 years ago and I believe I was forced out of Dragon by our hospital's EHR at around Dragon 11. More recently I have used the networked versions and was impressed by the improvements in accuracy and vocabulary. Some of my colleagues were horrible dictators with thick foreign accents and Dragon did great! So I am probably fretting over nothing but that is a hobby.

The USB-C adapter does not detract from your USB Microphone's quality.

OK, thanks Lunis. I found out that currently Dell XPS 17's are delivering 4 weeks out! Not sure I can wait that long.

In our opinion,  M-Tech (231) 547-5562 makes the best notebook computers and they are the only notebook computers made in the United States but we are not certain about their ETAs.

Right now we have the M8650 in stock. It is our most popular Dragon platform. Time frames are taking a little bit longer. So it's not all of our workers have opted to come back to work yet.

I cannot say anything specific about the Dell XPS 17 or using a wired USB headset, whether USB-C or USB [23] --> converted USB-C

but I *can* at a cautionary note about Dell computers and USB-C from my own recent experience:

A few months ago I purchased a Dell 7591 in a hurry, because my prior laptop had just failed.

The Dell 7591 comes with a Thunderbolt/USB-C port. However, this did not work with the Thunderbolt/USB-C doc that I already had (Plugable TBT3-UDV).

Googling finds many reports of compatibility problems between Dell laptops and Thunderbolt/USB-C docks - not just docks from other companies, but also from Dell's own docks. In my case, even after contortions involving driver updates from Dell and Plugable, I was never able too get this nor any other USB-C dock to work with my Dell machine. I have been able to survive without it because this machine has two USB A flat ports.

I recommend that a bit of research, googling, to see if there are any compatibility problems reported for the machine you are about to buy. Especially if you're considering a non-Dell dock.

I wonder if there are any USB-C audio cards yet?

Manufacturers are not eager to rush since so many computers still have standard USB 3 ports. USB ports are currently more or less irrelevant since USB-C converters are inexpensively available. There is no loss in quality and it will probably be a long time before we see dedicated USB-C devices because too many people would have to convert them back to standard USB.
