I have now got my new computer, brief specs Asus P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 Motherboard, Intel Sandybridge i7-2600K Unlocked Core i7 Quad-Core Processor, 16g Ram, Windows 7 Home premium. I use DNS pro, 11.5. I was having a few problems with the mic (unacceptable quality, but it did work the few times I used it), there isn’t, that I can find, a device manager similar to that in XP and the Philips speech mic which worked well. in XP, but when it did work in 7, there was a horrendous hollow sound on playback, notwithstanding my adaptation, that worked very well in XP (no echo). Then the computer crashed 2-4 times, and screwed up DNS, the sound and picture. On the crash I had to reboot via F1 because the CPU had overheated (a regular feature on a reboot when being used). Separately, Yet again I have not been able to transfer the speech files (third time) and macros, even though I copied the files and backup, hence all my macros gone. When I did get DNS loaded nd after the crashes, it reported that the user file was corrupted, requiring a new user etc. More to the point, the mic is no allegedly being used by another component. I uninstalled and reloaded but now the mic is being used by something else and there is no device manager I can find to reset. After some fiddling (after the crashes and losing all sound, I have that back, with the mic sounding fine, no hollowness, and Skype but I don't quite know how). I also had a squashed view on the screen, that too resolved, when the computer finally accepted the driver for the graphics card. For some reason, and I made no changes, the CPU set up is working to the margin of cool/overheating and over the last 24 hours has crashed 3 times, and all settings have gone haywire and DNS reports a fault on loading requiring a new user. The CPU on the F1 boot always shows overheating, even when off all night. The CPU seems to be running on the borderline between cool, blue, and red, over heating, which only kicks on a reboot. The CPU is set on manual (in tweaking) (and that is the way it loaded)?. Do I switch that to auto, and/or scale back the power to the CPU, perhaps change a BIOS? What and which to be changed and to what? I was also looking for up to date software that would work the buttons etc on the speech mic. I have now downloaded from a Philips referred site which talked about Windows 7, but yet to be tested. Also, have you, Lunis, yet run any tests on WordPerfect X6 (home and student) working with DNS? Results? Initially my main problem is the resetting of the CPU so that the shut down (or reboots following up dates) /boot up do not give the overheating message. This computer is not used for gaming requiring intensive use of the CPU, and probably the most demanding use will be DNS. I have incredibly slow download speeds from the internet (0.22 Mbps download and , 020 Mbps upload), but that is a TalkTalk issue/ failure to provide the service being paid for and demands for total freedom, going so far as to require that I follow their policies, adopt any user name they choose and that I do not do or say anything which causes inconvenience or distress to anyone and things along those lines, and not to contravene their policies. I couldn't believe what I was reading. And this from a company that demands their fees and has had be cut off for over 4 weeks in the last 18 months- years. As for the CPU, HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!

We haven't tested WordPerfect 16 but suspect it doesn't work. This information should be available on the Nuance website but we seem to have lost that link.
However, it sounds like you've got a much bigger problem on your hands, which is your computer. It may be something as simple as the main cooling fan not running but you should probably have it checked out. -------------------------

Thanks Lunis. The CPU fan is running, as are the other three, power supply, top vent and one I added at the front to impel air into the casing.
I suspect, but am asking for confirmation, that if I change manual to auto in tweaking it may well resolve the overheating the problem, but should something else be tweaked down, perhaps the power to the CPUwhich will take down the speed of the processor, usually increased for gaming. |

Problem resolved, I think. Temps way down even with a couple reboots within a minute, 100f/38c

Having resolve the problem with the computer overheating, I can now report that the Phillips microphone, with my adaptation (a small tube made from the toilet paper roll tube, cotton wool inside and stuck over the microphone of the Phillip) is working well, the Echo has gone and DNS was quite happy with the sound test. I did manage to get an update driver for the Phillips, but unfortunately, unless somebody is able to assist in this regard and this is the real question, how do I get the buttons to work? The buttons that I used previously, F 11 as the on-off merely prints F 11 rather than turning on or off the microphone. Previously I had used the page up and page down or the fast forward or fast backwards. If anybody is able to assist, it would be greatly appreciated. by the way, I am impressed by the increased accuracy with the faster machine. |

snoekie, Just FYI. There are a couple of points to keep in mind with regard to overclocking your CPU:1. Your other case fans do not have any impact on CPU temperatures. 2. Only the CPU heatsink and fan controls the CPU temperature. If you're going to overclock your 2600K, then you need to purchase the CPU fan and heatsink that will handle overclocking your Core™ i7 2600K. Otherwise, it will overheat. The fan that is provided is simply insufficient for overclocking. You might want to take a look at watercooled CPU heatsink/fans. Take a look at Thermaltake for an idea of what you need. Otherwise, with your current heatsink and CPU fan you simply cannot overclock your CPU without taking a significant temperature hit, and at the high temperatures you were reporting, your CPU wouldn't last very long. This is one of the reasons why Intel no longer provides CPU heatsink and fan with their latest and greatest processors. Intel also recommends that you not overclock without sufficient heatsink and fan combinations. They also will warn you that doing so with the heatsink and fan provided with the 2600K, you will void your warranty if the CPU overheats to the point of self-destructing. You should be able to download the latest SpeechMike application from the Philips website. The SpeechMike Exec application needs to be running in order to program the buttons. They do not work independently of the application.

Snoekie, The latest software for the PDCC is 2.9.270.10. I don't know which SpeechMike you are using, so you will have to choose the relevant one from this page http://www.dictation.philips.com/gb/support-contact/product-support/ You appear to have programmed your button with a Text Command to give you F11 typed out. Try a HotKey command instead. The on screen Manual is by no means bad. Read it (....RTFM!), and all will become plain. In an effort to help I attach my personal exported button commands. Try importing them and then editing them. I am now having no trouble with Win 7 Pro 64-bit, although initially I could not get more than the outline of the window to display: that turned out to need a reinstall of my graphics driver, so I have no reason to suppose you will suffer the same difficulty.

Thanks Lunis, I tried the hotkey route, but it will not accept the key, although the key on the keyboard works to turn the mike on and off, and in XP it worked. I have tried to input a number of times pressing the F11 key, but no joy. It is possible that it is also a keyboard issue, the board is no longer valid in W7, no supporting software, although a Microsoft product, a Microsoft Natural Multimedia keyboard 1.0A. It is a Philips Speech Mike pro, 6274 and I recently down loaded software from the Philips but it it didn't 'take', for the buttons, but works well with DNS as an input from the keyboard. |

The Philips SpeechMike Pro 6274 (and other 6xxx models) are not supported with the Philips Device Control Center program. You'll need a copy of the much-older SpeechMike Driver Utility which has less functionality if you wish to continue using the buttons on that microphone. Contact me off-line if you'd like a copy of that program. The microphone and mouse devices use Windows drivers so having them work immediately is normal for what you describe that you've done.

Thanks Larry, I have tried to load the driver that I had for the microphone from the disk that came with it but it is rejected by Windows 7 when I try to load it. I did manage to download from the Philips driver centre an apparent update, but wasn't able to find it again yesterday when I made a search. I did have trouble in finding it in the first place, but it did download and register on the machine. The F11 key selected is a spare one in the WP11 scheme, and works for turning the microphone on and off from the key board, but it will not register in the choice given in the speech mike control panel when I try to use it as the hotkey. I designated the record button on the microphone as the on/off awitch. |

Apologies Ed, I should have addressed my response to you. I will look at the manual, but an afterthought, the trackball works, as do the 'wing switches'/flappers. I will go back and look again. Referring back to what Lunis said, the speech mike software is running. |
