In 2010 I was using DNS 9.5 Legal and the Nuance salesman told me the update version of DNS 11 Legal would work so I bought the update CD-ROM. It wouldn't update 9.5, which is common knowledge, Nuance said in its response to my complaint. So Nuance gave me a new serial number that installed the full version from the update CD-ROM they sold me. With the new serial number, DNS 11 full version installed and activated just fine, and the initial install of the 11.5 update was also uneventful. Trouble arises, it appears, because Nuance will not allow full re-installs to re-activate with the same serial number. I have reformatted my HD and started from scratch - several times, because I like fiddling with my PC so it can be "slightly faster to the max" - and when DNS 11 is re-installed and activation (re-activation?) is attempted, the Nuance site says it's already activated. But what is activated? Not the re-install, which continues trying to activate. This is the problem, methinks. The activation issue becomes a real obstacle when I use the repair mode, which is something that I end up needing to use every so often, to clear up little hiccups in DNS functionality that inevitably occur over time with my heavy use. No can do with the 11.5 update. The original DNS 11.0 CD-ROM boots to the install / repair / uninstall screen and lets me choose repair and completes that operation without incident. After performing the DNS 11 repair install, and regardless of whether 11.5 update is a downloaded file on desktop or burned to CD-ROM, I get the error message "This utility could not find a qualified Dragon NaturallySpeaking product to patch." Screen shot JPEG file attached. Anyway, your thoughts, observations and perspectives will be most appreciated.

Our 1st recommendation would be for you to avoid Nuance salespeople because 99.9% of them do not use NaturallySpeaking and simply can't appreciate its functionality. Your Ver. 9.5 user profile should've upgraded but was likely not in the best of health. However, not being able to upgrade your 9.5 user profile was probably a blessing in disguise. There is a much better way to skin that cat. Under no circumstances, should you use an upgraded Ver. 9 profile. The proper procedure would've been to export the vocabulary and commands from your Ver. 9 profile and import them into a new Ver. 11.5 profile. You're just not going to get that kind of support from Nuance.
If you had come to us, we would have given you a pictorial step-by-step on how to upgrade the usable parts of your old Ver. 9.5 profile and a step-by-step on how to install your upgrade as a full copy. You will find all of this information in our KnowBrainer Installation/Training Guide. If you still have your Ver. 11.0 original upgrade disk, we can show you how to use that serial number to install it as a full copy but if you can't get the 11.5 upgrade to install (a fairly common issue) you can optionally obtain a full copy 11.5 Backup DVD which will avoid the issue entirely because it's not a patch. It's also a lot easier to install Legal 11.5 from a single disk as opposed to having to deal with an out of date disk and a patch which Nuance will only allow you to download 1 time. We find the entire service release system to be less than desirable and that is why we offer several workarounds. -------------------------

Lunis, Thanks for the response. I did a poor job of asking that question. Here is a letter that I wrote to Nuance that hopefully frames the issue more clearly: ... I paid hundreds of dollars for software, Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 Legal, which has proven marginally functional, at best. Inexplicably, your 11.5 Update seems to have removed some of the limited functionality in version 11. The functionality that I am referring to is the "Repair" function in the aptly named "Program Maintenance." Here is a screen shot of what I am talking about: Over time the software naturally develops minor glitches and malfunctions necessitating use of the "Repair" function in "Program Maintenance." Nothing wrong with that. Software isn't perfect and, more importantly, the "Repair" function was effective at resolving the minor glitches and malfunctions.Your 11.5 Update seems to have destroyed this essential function in Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 Legal. The original version 11 CD-ROM still allows "Program Maintenance" to perform the "Repair" function. It stands to reason that on completion of the version 11 "Repair" function at least some portions of the software must be out of date as compared to the same portions of software after installation of the version 11.5 Update. The obvious answer is to run 11.5 Update "Program Maintenance" to perform the "Repair" function and bring the software up to date. This is the resulting error message:
I believe this is my issue: because of the 11.5 update the repair function has been removed and replaced by completely uninstalling and then reinstalling all of the software. I do not think that this is what Nuance intended to do. But it is what Nuance in fact did. If anyone has knowledge to share on this point, please let me know. ------------------------- Intel Core i7 CPU 3770 @ 3.4 GHz (3.9 turbo, quad core, hyperthreading), 8MB L3 cache, 32 GB DDR3 @ 1600 MHz RAM, OCZ Vertex 4 120 GB SSD, Sennheiser BW900, Win7 Pro 64-bit SP 1, DNS Legal 11.5, MS Office 2010 32-bit SP 1, and Adobe Pro X. |

We misunderstood your original question but suspect that our answer would still work because our backup DVD is a Ver. 11.5 disk; no patches no secondary disk required. However, simply reinstalling should accomplish the same thing as a Repair.
We don't believe there is an issue with the NaturallySpeaking reminder that you only have 5 Activations left because Legal 11 includes 5 activations and that message would be normal because when you uninstall DNS, you gain back an activation. When you reinstall DNS, you lose an activation. Note that there may be some confusion because the Nuance developers probably didn't factor in that you might have to uninstall your software after having registered but you can completely ignore that message. -------------------------
