Hello!

This is my first spot so hope there's enough info and it's okay!

I have just been offered a laptop for work and travel purposes.  They have offered me a Toshiba Satellite R830-1E2 and I can't negotiate the model.  However, I already have Dragon premium 11.5 and I don't know if this is compatible or not.  I am not very techsavvy and thought somebody mgiht be able to help?  I am currently running DNS 11.5 on my desktop: PACKARD BELL - IMEDIA D3527 Desktop PC.

Thanks!

Welcome to the World’s Most Popular Speech Recognition Forum

This model has a 13.3 inch screen, adequate display, excellent battery life, nice anodized aluminum shell and is light. On the downside it is only a dual core i3 which will work but we would never recommend it because the system will likely timeout from time to time. Additionally, these units come stock with 2 Gb of RAM which really isn't enough to handle Windows 7 let alone other applications; especially Premium 11.5. It's unfortunate that some manufacturers still insist on putting anything less than 4 Gb of RAM in a notebook computer. Since your company is not giving you a choice on your computer, perhaps they will allow you to upgrade the RAM to minimally 4 Gb but preferably 8 Gb. If they're going to give you a stock 2 Gb Windows 7 64-bit machine, it won't likely be worth installing NaturallySpeaking because you will be spending all of your time waiting for everything to feed through virtual memory.

PS: If you do install NaturallySpeaking on this system, we recommend creating a Best Match III user profile rather than Best Match IV which is what NaturallySpeaking will default to. Best Match III will be easier on the system and we haven't really seen any evidence that Best Match IV is any more accurate so you might as well go for speed. Speaking of speed, you'll also probably need to set the accuracy slider to Fastest Response.

Thanks for your reply! I am currently running in on this pc withthese specs:

and it operates perfectly fine   The laptop will be my support for travelling, not for full-time use.

How much would it cost to upgrade RAM on a machine in the future?

 Thanks!

RAM has gotten pretty inexpensive so we tend to recommend contacting the manufacturer directly rather than searching for matching third-party RAM. Luckily, our Lenovo W520 came with 8 Gb of RAM in 2 out of 4 available slots and although we really didn't need an extra 8 Gb of RAM, when we discovered that the price was only $79, we couldn't resist. It wasn't until we found out that we had to remove the keyboard, to install 1\2 of the RAM, that we briefly regretted that decision but after a few choice words, 1 or 2 tantrums, some general fussing and a little crying it all ended fine when the Big Haired Lady (spouse) took over the RAM installation project.

Your Toshiba only has 2 slots total so you may have to throw away 2 Gb of RAM before adding a pair of 4 Gb Simms but before doing anything, you might just flip your computer upside down and remove the RAM cover to see if you have an empty slot available.

My wife has a similar model and with 4g ram it works great with medical edition. You should be fine.
