I am really at the point of losing my patience with DNS 11.5 Professional (and perhaps with KB ver. D as well). Just a few short weeks ago I resolved to have a new computer system built because I was experiencing so many freeze-ups with DNS that I was barely getting work done. So I went out with an IT tech acquaintance of mine and we configured and built a new system that would be able to handle the “resource” demands of DNS and KB.The new system (a desktop) has an Intel i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4 Ghz Quad core CPU, an Asus P8Z68-V Pro/GEN3 LGA 1155 mobo, Corsair Vengence 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 RSDRAM, an Intel 80GB SSD (as boot drive), a Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB, SATA III, 7200 RPM, 64MB Cache internal hard drive, a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus heatsink and fan, Logitech mouse and keyboard, and the Samson Airline 77 wireless microphone and ANC Half-Duplex USB soundcard.Windows 7 Professional 64 bit is installed. As is MS Office 2010 Home and Business. As is DNS and KB.AND already I am starting to experience problems. ONLY with the DNS and KB combination or with DNS solely. Can’t tell exactly. First, a had a freeze-up and could not even close DNS or KB. Had to eventually power down because nothing was working to close these programs. Even tried to close Word and couldn’t do that. So I pressed the “save” icon on Word (thinking that I was at least saving what I had done). I then powered down. About a half hour later I came back to the computer, booted up, and attempted to access the document I had been working on. Well, a complete save had not been done and I lost some work. NOT ONLY THAT but I received the following message: “Word has experienced a serious problem with the ‘natspeak word addin’ add-in. If you have seen this message several times, you should disable this add-in and check to see if an update is available. Do you want to disable this add-in?I “clicked” No and decided to write this request for help to the Forum. Anyone have any ideas of what the *&^%$%^ is going on?Regards, neuropsy

Welcome to the World’s Most Popular Speech Recognition Forum
1. So far you've made all the right moves including not disabling the DNS add-in. Unfortunately Windows 7 has a couple of features that may be getting in your way. The most important change, which we have added to the KnowBrainer manual, is disabling the UAC which can cause you all kinds of grief, if left in the default setting. You'll find a step-by-step on 86ing this miserable utility in the NaturallySpeaking Quick Tips (at the top of this page) when you look up UAC. 2. Although this is minor, we would additionally recommend disabling Windows page file. You'll find a step-by-step on this procedure when you look up “virtual” in the previously mentioned Quick Tips. After performing these 2 steps, reboot and please report back. -------------------------

Thanks for the reply, Lunis. I've made the two suggested changes you note below. Will have to see how DNS, KB and Word behave over the week. Will keep you and the forum posted.
Thanks again. |

As is DNS and KB.AND already I am starting to experience problems. neuropsy, Well, your hardware is certainly up to snuff and you shouldn't be having any resource issues, or performance issues. However, I have a couple questions and suggestions in addition to those provided by Lunis: 1. The problem may not be with DNS or KB. Nor, because you have installed Microsoft Office 2010, with Microsoft Office itself. However, did you import your user profile from your previous system? Also, what microphone were you using previously? I assume that the Samson Airline 77 wireless microphone is new. Have you rerun the Audio Setup Wizard (Check Microphone - DNS 11) if you imported your previous user profile and the Samson Airline 77 wireless microphone is a new addition relative to that profile? The reason that I ask these questions is that the problem may be coming from your user profile if you simply imported what you were previously using on your other system. 2. All things considered, you might try rerunning the Audio Setup Wizard (Check Microphone - DNS 11) and also performing another General training (i.e., if your user profile was created using another microphone – dictation source). However, if you have done all these things and you're still having problems, then you might try creating a brand-new user profile, skipping training, don't add any custom words or custom commands, and try using the new user profile for short period of time to see if the problem persists with the new user. If it does, consider attaching a copy of your Dragon log. However, remember that you can't attach it as Dragon.log. You must change the extension from Dragon.log to Dragon.txt. You can't have the word "log" anywhere after a period in the filename. It must be only Dragon.txt. Otherwise, we won't be able to read it (access it). 3. Did you install everything clean on your new system, or did you simply restore a backup image? 4. I'm not sure that eliminating the pagefile is a viable solution (i.e., setting virtual memory to "No paging file". Despite the total amount of RAM that you have (16 GB), sometimes eliminating the pagefile can be problematic, though this is rare. However, another option is setting the virtual memory to static vs. dynamic. By default, virtual memory is set up to allow Windows to control the size of the pagefile Quote: ONLY with the DNS and KB combination or with DNS solely. Can’t tell exactly. Do you want to disable this add-in?I “clicked” No and decided to write this request for help to the Forum. Anyone have any ideas of what the *&^%$%^ is going on? Just to check and see whether there is a conflict between Dragon and KnowBrainer, try running Dragon by itself for a while. Then try running both together. This will test whether or not there's a conflict and under what conditions. If you have a condition under which your entire system freezes, this is seldom caused by either Dragon or KnowBrainer, particularly if you are not able to close anything. Also, under that condition clicking on the Save icon won't save your file. When you reopen Microsoft Word under this condition, it will recover what it's saved automatically, but you will lose whatever you had dictated into Microsoft Word after that point. Never assume that under the condition that Microsoft Word has frozen that you can save your document. If word is frozen, clicking on the save button won't save your document. Also, make sure that all of your drivers, particularly your video and soundcard drivers are up to date. Soundcard drivers are necessary for playback given that you're using the Andrea half duplex USB SoundPod, but very often the problem with your entire system freezes is a video issue. If you have installed Microsoft Office 2010 64-bit, make sure that the NatSpeak Word AddIn referred to in the error message is the correct add-in. For Microsoft Office 2010 64-bit, the NatSpeak Word AddIn must be the 64-bit NatSpeak Word AddIn (dgnword_x64.dll). Otherwise, the 32-bit version NatSpeak Word AddIn is simply dgnword.dll. If the NatSpeak Word AddIn is correct and you continue to get this particular error message, try running a Repair of Dragon from the Windows Control Panel | Programs and Features | Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 or Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11.5, if you have the full version of 11.5 Professional, then click on the Change option. Otherwise, if you have applied the DNS11ServicePack1.exe, then the Windows Control Panel | Programs and Features will show it as Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11. Don't be confused thinking that the wrong version is installed. The only way you can check that is by clicking on the Dragon Help | About NaturallySpeaking. Nevertheless, try repairing DNS by clicking on the Change option at the top of the Programs and Features dialog and select Repair when the Dragon NaturallySpeaking InstallShield Wizard is displayed giving you the options of: Modify, Repair, or Remove. If you are prompted to install the DVD (original source), or if you get a dialog box that indicates that the InstallShield Wizard is looking for a file that it cannot find, that file is Dragon NaturallySpeaking.msi, which you can only find on the original DVD. Under this condition, insert the DVD, click on the Browse button and locate that file on the DVD. The process will continue at that point. If you are still unsuccessful in getting DNS/KB to run properly and/or you continue to get the system hanging, then it might be helpful if you attach a full copy of your Dragon log to your reply on the forum. However, be aware of the following: How to attach the Dragon log to a KnowBrainer post: If you have access to DNS (i.e., it's active and running), simply say "open show Dragon log". If not, click on the Windows Start button | All Programs | Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 (11.5) | click on Show Dragon log. This will open Windows Explorer with the file Dragon.log highlighted. Press and hold the right mouse button and then drag and drop the file on to your Windows Desktop. You will be prompted to either Move or Copy. Select Copy. Go to your Windows Desktop and highlight the file. Click on the filename and rename it from Dragon.log to Dragon.txt. In ordered for us to be able to view your Dragon log as an attachment on the KnowBrainer forum, you cannot use *.log anywhere in the extension for that file. The only thing that can be in the extension is *.txt. Attach it to your reply making sure that after you do that, you edit your reply and make sure that the file listed is displayed as Dragon.txt. Some users make the mistake of inadvertently incorrectly renaming the file such that it ends up being Dragon.log.txt. As I've already pointed out, "log" can't be anywhere after the period that designates the extension. Hopefully, you will find a solution somewhere in the suggestions. If not, let us know and attach a copy of your Dragon log so that we can review it. If you hear the sound of hoofbeats, think horses not zebras. -------------------------

Hi Chucker! Thanks for your response. I did inaugurate the changes suggested by Lunis. To answer your questions,No, I did not import my user profile (or anything else) from the older computer. I was too fearful that I might be re-introducing corrupted or otherwise problematic files to the new computer. I did a fresh install of DNS (from the disc) and the new copy of KnowBrainer (ver. D) that I received from Lunis. I was previously using a Shure wireless mic but again, nothing was imported from the old system so that older microphone should not be relevant. The Samson Airline 77 is new and purchased from KnowBrainer about a month ago. Not used on any system but the new system.I ran the Audio Set-up after I installed Dragon and KnowBrainer onto the new build. There were no problems with that or the subsequent training. Again, did not do any importing of old files or profiles to the new system.Prior to writing this response to you I HAD ANOTHER FREEZE. Got the same message as last time. Plus Microsoft Word was then not responding. Outlook was not responding. I received a message when I tried to shut down MS Word that it was “not responding.” It seems that I was able to close DNS BUT NOT KnowBrainer. I also got a message that KB was not allowing Windows to shut down when I eventually opted to close the system as things seemed to be lying in limbo. I am not a happy camper. I am now going to try to run MS Word and DNS together without KB to see what happens. Will get back to you and the forum with a report of results. SEE BELOW I tried MS Word with DNS only and still eventually (like after 7-10 minutes) became frozen. Was able to open Outlook and IE and close them also. But was not able to close Word or DNS. Finally had to choose the option to close with a Hail Mary thrown in regarding saving the work I had done. The problem still persists. Will again read your suggestions to see if I might be able to effect any other changes. And will try to see if I can submit that DragonLog in text form. |

We connected virtually to Neuropsy’s computer earlier today and made a few minor changes including disabling the Dragon Sidebar which were found to be a stability problem in some computers. We are waiting to see how everything pans out.

After Lunis took some actions with my computer via a virtual “visit”, I did not use the computer for the remainder of the day. However, this morning I booted her up and started working on a document I had started a few days ago. Within 5 minutes after starting, and using DNS and KB and the mic, etc., I heard a “boing” and received the following message in a small pane:“DNS for Windows has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.” It then gave the option to “CLOSE PROGRAM” and I pressed that button. When that pane disappeared there was another pane behind it stating the following:“Microsoft Visual++ Runtime LibraryX Runtime Error!Program C…This application has requested the RUNTIME to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application’s support team for more information.”The program then closed and restarted and Word was able to recover what I had done up to that point. DNS also closed but did not restart. I have just booted it up again (with not minor trepidation I might add). I will try to see if I can get any work done.Anyone have a clue what’s going on? And more importantly, how to fix? |

NaturallySpeaking doesn't have a recovering reboot sequence built into it like Microsoft Word. It cannot re-launch on its own and probably shouldn't because you would have to close and re-launch Microsoft Word before you could use it. NaturallySpeaking must ALWAYS be launched before Full Text Control applications such as Microsoft Word.
You might want to wait to see if this problem reoccurs but at this point, we suspect it will. It sounds like you have a stability issue which could be caused by a partially corrupted installation of DNS. With that in mind, our 1st recommendation would be to perform a Repair of DNS which is as easy as re-inserting the original DNS DVD into the disk drive and letting it reinstall the application. -------------------------
