Has anyone had any experience, or done any testing, of the Sennheiser BW900 Bluetooth? In particular, how does it compare to the Samson Airline 77 for accuracy? Thanks. |

We have not yet tested this microphone but we will order one tomorrow to test. However, we think it is extremely unlikely that it will hold up against the Hybrid Samson Airline 77 and it very well may not work out as a speech recognition microphone. We have not yet experienced a Bluetooth microphone that we are completely satisfied with and the microphone element on the BW900 is quite small which makes us a bit nervous. However, the BW900 doubles as a wireless headset for your cell phone, landline and even VoIP. It also has noise cancellation so it's certainly worth testing and we will post our results.

Thanks for the info. How long will the test cycle be and roughly when -- roughly, approximately -- is it reasonable to look for the results post?

This microphone is so new that the first distributor we called, didn't have it in stock but a backup distributor did. We should have the microphone next week and we will hopefully be able to give a preliminary report just before Christmas. In theory, we really like the idea of a low-profile wireless microphone that will work on a cell phone, landline and hopefully a computer. We also talked with a couple of people who were already using the system and they seem to be very happy with the BW900’s comfort and how it works on a cell phone and landline but we haven't heard of anyone using it with speech recognition software. But of course, that's our job and we will use any excuse to justify purchasing a new toy J

I've been testing the Sennheiser BW900 off and on for the last two months or so and find it extremely impressive with speech recognition. The BW900 is lightweight, comfortable, and has absolutely phenomenal accuracy. In my opinion it's every bit the rival of the Sennheiser ME3 and Samson Airline 77 in terms of accuracy, and more noise canceling than the Airline 77. I've had a number of folks email with questions about the BW900 versus the Airline 77 and the Plantronics CS55, the two other top-performing wireless microphones. In many respects the BW900 offers the best of both: it has the accuracy of the Airline 77 and the comfort and convenience of the CS55. Like the CS55, the base unit has modular telephone output so to connect it to a PC you must use it with a rocker switch such as the one used with the CS55. Although Sennheiser lists a PC cable as an accessory, it does not appear they're actually making this available yet. The BW900 can pair directly with a bluetooth equipped PC and also with a cell phone. I have it paired with my iPhone and it works great. I have not yet tested this microphone when paired via bluetooth to a PC. Since it's it's already paired to the base and requires this for charging, connecting the base directly to the PC seems the simplest way to go. Like the CS55, the BW900 provides a very "crisp" sound and I have found it best to create a new user profile when using this microphone. It becomes readily apparent that is well worth this small investment in time to get the pay-off in performance. Unlike many bluetooth microphones, the BW900 has a boom that extends all the way to your mouth and uses a highly accurate, noise cancelling microphone element. Unlike the airline 77, it includes a rechargeable battery that has a 70 hour standby time and 4-5 hr talk time. The battery can be pulled out and "hot swapped" in a few seconds and there's a slot in the base unit for charging your back-up battery. The headset has a range of about 100 meters. The BW900 hosts some interesting technology, including Sennheiser's Adaptive Intelligence™ technology, which allows the BW900 to adjust the dynamic volume and the mic sensitivity to compensate for the ambient noise in the user's environment. Are there downsides to the BW900? It's not cheap, but certainly no more expensive than the CS55 or Airline 77. The base station is smaller than that of the CS55 and overall footprint is markedly smaller than that of the Airline 77. Again, the real value of this microphone is it's quality performance with speech recognition and comfort. I predict you'll be hearing a lot more about this gem ... and look forward to hearing a review by Lunis. ------------------------- Jon Wahrenberger, MD
