Following reinstallation of DNS Pro 11.5, headset mike passed volume and quality tests, but I get the error 'The audio input device is not responding'. I've redone the testing a number of times, uninstalled and reinstalled the software, but continue to get the same error. Any suggestions?

Are you have any other problems with other USB devices? Are the rest of your USB ports working correctly?

Thank you for your response. I'm using a Dell notebook attached to a docking port. I've tried a number of different USB ports on the notebook and also on the docking port without success. However, I'm still able to use the same headset successfully on my second notebook at home – in fact I'm using it now . The two systems are not operating at the same time: the one at home is turned off when I'm at work and vice versa. Both systems run Windows 7.

Having more than 1 computer running NaturallySpeaking simultaneously is not an issue. In other words the 2 computers don't talk to each other.

When running the Audio Check, are you prompted to choose a sound system and do you see your USB soundcard on the list or does the Audio Check simply skip ahead to the Dragon adjust your volume menu? We know that your microphone is OK but you may have an issue with Windows finding the USB driver for your microphone. Have you tried disconnecting your Dell notebook computer from the docking port? Docking ports occasionally cause problems.

Thanks again for your suggestions. I've tried with the notebook disconnected from the docking port, but without success. It seems to recognise the USB headset, and allows me to check for volume and quality. Both passed, but when it attempts to 'initialise', I receive the same error as before.

It might be time to create a new user profile; at least for test purposes.

Thank you again! I've created a new profile and I'm now able to use DNS as before. Is there a problem having two profiles? My home based notebook now has the old one, and my work based notebook has the new one.

The only disadvantage of having more than one profile is that NaturallySpeaking makes you choose which profile to open and the additional required hard drive space. Note that you can always delete the corrupted profile via the Manage User Profiles menu. You can also create a shortcut that launches a specific user profile so that you don't have to choose.

Welcome to the World's Most Popular Speech Recognition Forum

Are you using a desktop or notebook computer? If you're using a desktop computer, don't trust USB splitters, front or side ports. Only use a dedicated rear USB port. If you're using a notebook computer, all of your USB ports are dedicated.

If the previous paragraph doesn't apply, it would appear that Windows is losing track of your USB soundcard and that would explain your error message or Windows found your USB soundcard and has relabeled it #2 and is looking for #1.

We recommend substituting a different USB port and rerunning the Audio Check. Verify that Windows only sees 1 USB soundcard and let us know if that works

PS: Note that if you're using the manufacturer USB microphone, it should be considered as more of a starter and not something you should use for serious work. If speech recognition plays a major role in workflow, you might want to check out our Microphone Comparison Matrix where you can view our latest test results which compare pricing, accuracy, noise cancellation, features and even comfort.
