So I understand the electronic concepts of full/half duplex but I am confused to how they apply to the sound pods.

I see that the Andrea half-duplex has two inputs and the full duplex also has two inputs. I tried to read Chucker's explanation here http://www.knowbrainer.com/pubforum/index.cfm/product/63_6/www.sff.net/people/www.dellmoser.com/index.cfm?page=viewForumTopic&topicId=8488&pageNo=1 but it just made it more confusing.

By definition of full/half duplex the half duplex pod can be used for input (mic) or output (headphones) but not both at the same time. Is this correct? Why does it have also the speaker output than? I suppose someone could be use it just for headphones?

Also the half duples Andrea, I have found two model numbers P-C1-1016600-4 and C96-1019300-1, but also P-C1-1021450-1  , P-C1-1024200-1  .

Could someone please clarify this for me?

thanks!

xxtraloud,

Sometimes we make assumptions about our explanations with regard to the end-user understanding of such. Here is the simpler explanation.

Full duplex USB SoundPods can function as stand-alone and independent soundcards. That is the microphone input and the audio output are controlled by the internal DSP chip and function entirely through the USB port. Simply put, you can completely disable your internal soundcard and use a full duplex USB SoundPod as your only soundcard.

A half duplex USB SoundPod, of which the Andréa half duplex is the only one that I'm aware of, is defined as half duplex because only the mic input is handled via the USB sound port. In this case, if you want to have your audio output through the Andrea half duplex USB SoundPod, then you have to connect the green cable to the back of the SoundPod and plug it into the audio output of your internal soundcard. In short, I have duplex USB SoundPod uses the USB port for the microphone input and the internal soundcard for the audio output.

Hopefully, that clears it up.

thanks for the exlanation. I am still puzzled by this part though.

"In this case, if you want to have your audio output through the Andrea half duplex USB SoundPod, then you have to connect the green cable to the back of the SoundPod and plug it into the audio output of your internal soundcard"

If I do that, then where is the sound coming out from, you are suggest to connect the output of my internal sound card to the input of the soundpod. How would that produce any sound?

And can anybody clarify those Andrea model numbers please? What is the USBD-2A?

thanks again chucker

xxtraloud,

With the Andrea half duplex USB SoundPod, the output is coming from your internal soundcard by virtue of connecting the half duplex to your internal soundcard (PC soundcard) using the green cable that is provided with the Andrea half duplex USB SoundPod. Therefore, in order to use the headphones output from the Andréa half duplex, you have to connect it to your PC soundcard. Again, only the mic input is connected to the USB port.

There are only slight differences between the various models of the Andrea PureAudio USB-SA and the Andrea PureAudio USBD-2A. You can go to the Andréa website and research it for yourself, but I'll let Lunis explain any differences on the forum.

A word of caution about attaching the patch cord with green plugs to the output of your soundcard and into the pass-through of the Andrea 1\2 duplex USB soundcard… DON'T do it. Although this technique will work, it tends to leak sound into the microphone output which can lower the overall quality of your dictation. If you are using a 1\2 duplex USB soundcard with a headset microphone that includes a speaker, it's better to plug the speaker output directly into your computer soundcard output and just use the 1\2 duplex adapter for speech recognition sound input.

As Chuck noted, the
ANC USB Pod is probably the last 1\2 duplex USB soundcard in the world and is in its end-of-life cycle meaning that Andrea Electronics will be discontinuing this item for popularity reasons. USB soundcard manufacturers believe that the market only wants full-duplex USB adapters.
