How would one use a handheld mic like Samson Q7 - hold it in your hand all day?

Is there any way to make things more convenient?

supee,

You can get a desktop microphone stand, like the one that Lunis sells, or you can get the spring-loaded boom that allows you to move the microphone up and out of your way, reposition it easily and get it closer to your mouth when you need it. The desktop stands can be a tad awkward in terms of getting close enough to the microphone without blocking your screen, yada yada yada. On the other hand, the spring bloom requires a place where you can attach it to your desk (clamp it). I use the spring-loaded boom with my Sennheiser MD 431 II, which is similar to the Samson Q7.

The only time I hold my Sennheiser MD 431 II in my hand is when I'm giving demonstrations before a large audience and I need the ability to move around using my 15 foot XLR cable, as well as being able to use the slide switch, which the Samson Q7 doesn't have. Sometimes I do hold it in my hand because with this 15 foot cable I can stand up and walk around if I wish. However, if you're just going to be sitting at a desk all day, then the spring-loaded boom is the best way to go if you got a place to mount it.

supee, you might find this video on YouTube informative. Personally, I think this is an excellent way of cheaply creating a desktop microphone stand. However, you may prefer this more professional looking setup.

I have used a number of microphone stands over the years with my Sennheiser MD 431 II.  I found most were too cumbersome and ended up in the garbage.  A microphone stand that I settled on was the Apex Heavy Duty Telescopic.  It was cheap, sturdy, easily adjustable and its footprint allows you set it outside the monitor area making it an ease to dictate effectively without any inteference or obstruction. The other thing if you go to out-of-office meetings or travel it can be easily be thown into a luggage-like brief case, which handy unlike some of the other microphone stands.

Nelson,

Thank you for that recommendation. I have never seen the Apex Heavy Duty Telescopic microphone stand, but it looks like a very good solution for someone who can't use the mounted spring bloom and who also has limited desktop space.

Very utilitarian microphone stand. I will keep that in mind for clients who are using handheld microphones like the Sennheiser MD 431 II, Samson Q7, or Audix OM7/Audix OM2.
