InSync, the manufacturers of the famous Buddy Desktop line of microphones and soundcards sent us their latest microphone to test last week. It's called the Buddy Desktop DSP USB TableMike and is essentially an upgraded version of the Buddy Desktop microphone. The primary difference between the Buddy Desktop and the Buddy Desktop DSP is the introduction of a process called FilteredAudio. Perhaps the easiest approach to appreciating the subtlety of FilteredAudio is to run the Audio Setup Wizard, which you should do with any new microphone. During the last stage of the Audio Setup Wizard (Check Microphone in DNS 11) you will see a notable change in the yellow versus green meter. Although the meter looks perfectly healthy on a standard Buddy Desktop microphone, which typically scores about 21 in DNS 10, the yellow is all but absent when testing the Buddy Desktop DSP, resulting in a DNS 10 score of 30. Note that DNS 11 no longer supports numerical scoring because it's too easy to fool the system.
If you're wondering how this new technology translates into speech recognition accuracy… the visuals are more impressive than the actual performance and even though we couldn't verify higher accuracy and only found the noise cancellation to be slightly improved over the previous model, we were extremely impressed with the new 12 inch usable vocal range. The standard Buddy Desktop is limited to about a 4 inch range and works best from around 2 inches while the new DSP unit is extremely accurate from as far away as 8 inches. Our biggest complaint about desktop microphones is the typical short range which forces end users to lock their bodies into a rigid uncomfortable position. In our opinion, the most important aspect of the new Buddy Desktop DSP is not having to lock your body into some form of a hunched over position and additionally having enough flexibility to turn your head away from the microphone while dictating; facing another monitor or reading notes. If you're a fan of Buddy Desktop microphones (and why wouldn't you be considering they introduced us to the concept) you'll find the Buddy Desktop DSP to be slightly more expensive but well worth the price. And… at the time of this posting, it would appear that KnowBrainer Inc is currently the only source for this gem
