Here is one crazy experiment. It all began when I had to purchase a new cell phone and decided to include Bluetooth capability and a Bluetooth microphone for hands-free driving. The telephone I purchased was a Samsung SGH-E380 and a Bluetooth microphone that could be bought as an accessory with the telephone.

Just before I did this, there was discussion on the forum about possible Bluetooth devices that showed promise for use with DNS 9.0. It immediately occurred to me that such a device would be ideal for use with my laptop, so I queried Lunis privately regarding the device he himself mentioned. Then, this weekend, I decided to try the Samsung device with my laptop and create a Bluetooth user profile. I am using this device with that profile to dictate this message, and the accuracy is stunning even though I trained the profile with only one piece (the Kennedy speech). Naturally, the total talk time for the battery in the mic is not anywhere near the 8-10 hours Lunis mentioned for the device he will be testing. At least, the booklet coming with Samsung Bluetooth mic states that the talk time is 3.5 hours.  There may be other drawbacks since I have no facilities to test the mic or, for that matter, any experience in testing microphones at all. Nevertheless, the results are so surprising and positive that I thought it was worth sharing.

Best regards,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

just curious as I need to get a Bluetooth for my mobile anyway - do you have any further details on the exact microphone? Browsing through the web I found the one below for the Samsung SGH-E380 on a German site. Unfortunately no further details either. Does yours look similar?

Cheers

Hans

Hi Hans,

No, that isn't the Bluetooth mic that I have. I have never figured out how to insert pictures into this forum, but if you go to the following link:

http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/12199.htm

you will find a pretty good picture my mic. Don't be fooled by the different model number.  See my comments and Martin Markhoe's at:

I still use this Bluetooth mic whenever I am working at home on my laptop.

Best regards,

Daniel

Daniel,

In the link you provided you wrote:

"Here are the results: the passage read consisted of 140 words, and for the first two tests, the accuracy was 98.5% (138/140). The third test could not be carried out because the background music resulted in too many words being added to even conduct a test. Given these results, I very much doubt that this mic would be viable in a normal office environment. However, for me dictating using my laptop mostly at home, this mic is a gem."

Your testing results are exactly what we would expect to find with a good Bluetooth headset designed for a telephone. Even the Andrea NC-91 supplied with some versions of Dragon NaturallySpeaking will work just fine in a quiet home environment.

Our experience over the years has shown that even in quiet environments, a better noise canceling microphone will provide higher accuracy. This better accuracy rate may only be 1% and for many people this increase in accuracy may be irrelevant. We have always said that a more expensive microphone will pay for itself in reduced correction time for professionals dictating thousands of words a day.

Thank you for testing and confirming your results.
