dear person(s) my dad's just bought an Olympus DS-4000 for work. he wants to use it to walk round schools and talk into a lapel microphone - so that then, when he gets home, he can transcribe whatever he's said during the day into text, via DragonNaturallySpeaking the thing is, whilst i was looking for information about lapel mic's i came across a post some guy had written about the Olympus ME-15 (the mic i'd pretty much decided to get). the guy said.... Quote: Not for use with speech recognition software I bought this because it was recommended from the Dragon NaturallySpeaking software page. This was a mistake, the microphone is not compatible with the PC audio input. Do not buy this if you plan to connect it up to a PC. now I'm no expert, but I thought you were supposed to plug this (lapel) mic into the voice recorder, NOT the PC. & then transcribe whatever you've said into your voice recorder into your pc using dragon AFTER THAT in which case, the issue of the mic being incompatible with PC audio input isn't an issue, right??? because the microphone isn't actually connected to the PC anyway???? in which case, the Olympus ME-15 lapel mic might be ok for speech-2-text transcription using Dragon????
clarification on this thing much appreciated ( ideally, clarification on what lapel mic i should buy. the ME-15??? or another one??? bearing in mind it's to be used with Dragon)
cheers, david

David: I do believe that Lunis is busy mailing out upgrades and that is why he hasn't answered your posting. He is the "mic guru" and I am only trying to offer some small suggestions until he gets finished mailing out upgrades! I searched (top of screen) for the ME15 and found several postings regarding it. You might like to try that while waiting for Lunis. There is also an ME12 mic that is similar to the ME15. Also, have you thought about the ME52? Try a search for that and you will find many postings about that mic! David, For me, the ME-15 worked well as a microphone in my Olympus recorder, but not as a microphone plugged directly into the computer. The ME-52W, however, has worked very well for both. I get good accuracy with it as a lapel microphone, although not as good as when using a headset mic. If you dad is going to be walking around dictating into a voice recorder with a lapel mic, he will probably also pick up a lot of ambient noise that will adversely affect the transcription results. He would do better to plug the mic directly into the recorder, set sensitivity to low, and hold the mic close to his mouth while talking. Or, if he didn't mind wearing a headset, he could get a good headset and plug it directly into the voice recorder. |

Welcome to the KnowBrainer Forums
Sorry to keep you waiting but Dana's assumption was right on the money. We shipped out about 150 orders of Pro 10 upgrades today (beginning at 3 AM in the morning) and will be shipping out all the Legal 10 upgrade orders tomorrow; or should we say later today. We should be caught up for about a week or so until the Medical 10 upgrades hit and then the fun will begin all over again. We like the ME52W combo lapel/snubnose microphone looks almost exactly like the ME12 and ME15 (identical twin brother) but is slightly higher quality and includes a removable cord so that you can utilize it as a lapel microphone and a snub nose microphone. We like the snub nose aspect because we typically carry the DS-4000 and now, the Olympus DS-5000, in our top shirt pocket. Although you may not care, the ME52W microphone also works reasonably well for speech recognition in a very quiet environment. We also include an extra heavily shielded removable 6 foot extension cord for computer use. HOWEVER, if you're planning on transcribing your DS-4000 recordings into NaturallySpeaking we don't recommend using the conference setting even though it's a temptation. The conference setting simply picks up too much environmental noise. We recommend utilizing the close mic setting because the ME52W microphone extends your pickup range to about 10 inches; as opposed to the usual 2 to 4 inches. Also note that the digital recorder conference setting is almost completely unacceptable when attempting to transcribe in NaturallySpeaking. -------------------------
