The Apple iPod is convenient for me.  I have an Olympus 3000, and it is great, even if I still have to fiddle with the output of running it through DNS Pro.  But I am starting to carry my iPod with me.  At a conference last week, they used iPods to recod the speakers.  I looked it up, and Belkin, has a couple of mic adapters, one with adjustable gain, and another with 3 gain settings.  I would still probably use my senheiser mic with the adapter.  I was just wondering if anyone had figured this out?

Hi Jim!

What a clever idea... an iPod to record things and use that with DNS. You mentioned Belkin and adjustable gain adapters in your post. Do you have a link for that? I'd really appreciate that and also hearing how well iPod works with DNS.

Thanks for sharing!

Belkin offers 2 mic adapters.

The one I saw used at the conference was:

The one with the adjustable gain was:

If I remember correctly, the iPod only does 8-bit recording, and DNS requires a 16-bit recording.

certainly,  ipod firmware  used to be limitedto 8-bit recording.  I believe that more recent firmware may have improved on this, though.

Many versions of the ipod can also be hacked to improve their recording capilities1.  See for example http://ipod.hackaday.com/2004/12/30/how-to-record-on-your-ipod-for-free/  There was also talk of the rock box firmware offering improved recording capabilities, though I am not sure if this was ever done.

So, I guess it depends on what version of the eye point you have, and how much effort you want to put in.  (I did look at using one of the ipods for recording lectures - which is why I have this info -- but ended up deciding will be easier to buy an archos :-) )

I think that I am still intrigued by the idea of a dual purpose device.  The Olympus is great, but the thought of having an iPod or Archos with me for music needing only to carry a microphone seems nice.

Tell me more about the archose set-up that you have.  It seems that the video ones are too big to carry easily on your belt (which defeats the purpose of the the convenience of carrying one..

1The forum seems to have lost my last post :-( so this one will be brief. I use an Archos jukebox multimedia, which is a bit bulky but does fit on (my) belt. I bought it because it was cheap second-hand, and also works as a camera, video camera and card reader.

I have tried recording onto this using my RadioShack microphone. While it has been okay for lectures (using an omnidirectional microphone) with the RadioShack it does add a high-pitched noise, which may be a problem for speech recognition. It also records as an MP3 file -- I'm not sure if this would be an issue for Dragon.

If you're looking for a flexible MP3 player, Archos do do a small MP3-only player, and the Cowen iaudio players also seem well thought of. I think both should allow recording, though obviously you would want to check before buying anything.1
