Hi everyone,

We're looking to put together a number of short videos that would let our Professional Recorder users understand your devices better.  The subjects would range from:

  • What's the difference between a Mic Sense low, medium, high and auto & when should you use each?
  • What are the best setting for personal Dictation?
  • What are the best settings for conference recorders?
  • Which lapel mic works best?
  • How do you set up wifi on the DS-9500?
  • How can I maximize battery life?
  • How do I set up ODMS to work with Dragon for back end speech recognition?
  • What's the best way to record a telephone conversation?
Are there any other subjects you'd like us to cover?
As always, Lunis, I'd love your input.  Are there any questions you get a lot during the sales process that you would love to have a quick 30-45 second video that you could direct users to in order to see the solution?

The only default setting change we change is the Mic's sensitivity from Middle to Low because the average end-user is typically close to the microphone and may or may not be dictating in a noisy environment.

I absolutely agree with you that for personal dictation my go-to is low. But I have noticed I've been getting a lot of complaints from police officers lately. In general they aren't changing to conference room mode, or they have it on Dictation 1 but with a low mic sense, so that won't cut it if you're trying to record an interview. We're hoping to be able to educate everyone to make sure they're getting the most value out of our recorders as possible.

Thanks for the feedback. It's much appreciated.

Hi
Great idea. I'd like to know if I can enter different wifi access points with the 9500, and will the device automatically log into whichever one I am close to. So I can switch between using the recorder at the office and at home etc.

Thanks.

Hi El Terry,

That's a great suggestion for the video. It might take me a while to put together, so in the short term the answer is yes, you can save up to 10 wireless network profiles. Work, home, cell phone hotspot etc. and the system will connect automatically when you reach those locations. Let me know if you need help setting that up.

I use ODMS a lot with dragon pro. I use the 9500 and then email the file and let ODMS and dragon do the rest. The my sec does the corrections.

Hence all the recognition is done by background transcription. I need to know can I use fields this way?? Thsi would be a big help. I simply need to go to diffecrent part of a boilerplate doc or template. Many thanks

Because of the misrecognition risk, Nuance only permits a very small handful of Vocabulary Editor commands like new pargraph and cap that.

Thanks Alan. I'll give it a whirl. The last time I tried I spent 30 minutes with Olympus UK support to resolve the mess I was in. Proably my fault, and they were great.

Another snippet I'd like to know. Why does the 9500 show the message 'preparing update' for the last half dozen times I switched it off?

Is there something I'm missing?

It's tough to say with the description you provided alone, but in general it means that the device is trying to upgrade the firmware and something isn't working.  Can I ask you a few more questions?

(1) What firmware version does the DS-9500 has installed?

(2) Does this happen when disconnecting the device from the computer after downloading files and turning it off?

(3) Is the device connected to the computer via WiFi?

(4) Are you using the software in workgroup or standalone?

My question is what is the best way convert the DSS format to something universally usable, like mp3? I have an Olympus 7000, but I hate installing the Olympus bloatware only to convert the files to a format everyone uses. I can transcribe the DSS files directly into Dragon. Is there some way to have Dragon directly convert the recording to WAV or mp3?

Thanks for any help or ideas,
Jerry

Are you perhaps referring to DS2 algorithms rather than DSS? We're only asking because DSS recordings are outdated and limited to a 5 kHz ceiling. Your DS-7000 digital recorder defaults to DS2. You definitely don't want to transcribe DSS files through Dragon when you can use DS2.

We completely agree with Rüdiger's assessment.

Personally, if you already have the Olympus software, I wouldn't consider it to be bloatware. Natively, Dragon doesn't have the functionality you are looking for, but I have also created a utility which allows for converting DRA files to TXT and WAV files:

ConvertDRA

You can download the installer per the link above and start by creating a 30 days trial.

When run, it will look like this:

Currently, the UI is in German, but if it is of any interest, I could always create an English version without too much effort.

Thank you all very much for the replies.  I was out for a few days, and just got back. I had to use my iphone for recording an interview instead of the Olympus.

I will definitely try the conversion software, and switch to DS2 on the Olympus.

But, how do I get Dragon to keep the "raw" dra file it makes for the transcription to use for the conversion?  Is that an option somewhere?

Thanks,

Jerry

Start by clicking the Transcribe Recording dialogue from the Dragon Tools menu. It will look as below. Under the Output text file path according to your choice, Dragon will save a TXT file and a DRA file resulting from the transcription. Don't be surprised that the DragonBar will become inaccessible once transcription has been started, and it looks like Dragon does nothing until you are prompted to take the next action:

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a short video we just finished today that shows off how you can use the an Olympus Recorder with the included ODMS software in conjunction with Dragon to perform back-end speech recognition. If you don't have our software yet and you only want to see a short demo of the two programs working together, jump to the 2 minute mark.

Alan,

New 9500 user here with a puzzling hardware issue having symptoms not addressed by the usual suspects in Troubleshooting.

Part way into uneventful playback of an unencrypted DS2 file, I switched into Stop Mode, but never got the usual large white icon confirmation.  The device is still reading 75%.  None of the operational h/w controls have any effect, although I have purposely avoided Erase and New, or charging.  Any ideas?

Alan,

Problem solved. It was the new, OEM LI92B which I had substituted recently.  After it drained, I got the triple beeps and power supply error (outside the 4.4 to 5.5 Mamps) charging range warning / please disconnect plug alert.  Both USB and dock cables work fine.  The device responded as designed to a power supply malfunction.  No files were corrupted.

Puzzling now is that this was a fresh (Feb 2019), retail OEM model that appears genuine. Although it did get lost in shipping which took twelve days instead of overnight.

Hi Alan
a quick 9500 questoin. I updated my device with the latest 1.12 firmware, and at last the wifi is working better.
However, is is normally possible to install tbhe Olympus software on another mahcine and expect the wifi transfer to work. Bearing in mind the diffence in file paths etc.
Looking forward to some light on the subject.
Thanks
El Terry
