Hello, I added a list of custom words to my recorder profile, but the "train" button in the vocabulary editor is grayed-out, presumably because the microphone is turned off. I assume I need to turn the microphone on in order to train these words, but I don't know how to do it. The procedure has been posted here a million times, but I haven't been able to track it down. Could you post it again? Thanks. I'm still using Dragon v10.1 on Windows XP SP3. Recorder is a DS5000id. ------------------------- Compaq 6730b laptop Intel Core 2 Duo p8400 2.26 Ghz 1.93 G RAM (available) Intel Wireless Wifi Link 5100 adapter / Windows XP SP3 / Knowbrainer purchases: Philips 9600 DPM, Knowbrainer headset microphone, Samson Airline 77, Olympus DS5000id, DNS 10.1, Knowbrainer 2008, Parrott Half Duplex VXI USB Sound Pod |

In Windows XP, search for:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking11\Users\ (Your User Name)\current\options.ini and open the file in Notepad. Locate the line: dictation source=8 and replace the "8" for a "2". Save and close the file. Also run the Audio Setup Wizard on the microphone. You should know that Nuance disables microphone input on a digital recorder profile specifically to prevent you from training because of the differences between a microphone profile and recorder profile. We additionally don't recommend training imported vocabulary because for the most part, you're just making a lot of extra unnecessary work for yourself. NaturallySpeaking is normally pretty good at guessing but having made the previous warnings, we think the end-user should be able to make their own choice and completely agree with hacking the ini file so that you can toggle your microphone on and off -------------------------

Thanks.
Unfortunately, Dragon doesn't recognize a lot of the words I use. For example, I'm constantly swearing when I dictate and Dragon is a total prude and refuses to transcribe my filth correctly. Also, I dictate a lot of fiction and nonfiction with strange character names and slang and so on, most of which gets mangled. I'd like to upgrade to 11.5, but at the moment I can't afford the hardware upgrades that would be required to use it. My laptop's OK, but I'm pushing it as it is with v10.1. The one part of training custom vocabulary for a recorder profile that I don't understand is how you do the actual training. I assume you would use the desktop microphone to train the words, but does that work with a recorder profile? ------------------------- Compaq 6730b laptop Intel Core 2 Duo p8400 2.26 Ghz 1.93 G RAM (available) Intel Wireless Wifi Link 5100 adapter / Windows XP SP3 / Knowbrainer purchases: Philips 9600 DPM, Knowbrainer headset microphone, Samson Airline 77, Olympus DS5000id, DNS 10.1, Knowbrainer 2008, Parrott Half Duplex VXI USB Sound Pod |

Under the circumstances, you probably don't have any other recourse but to train some of your vocabulary although other parts of your vocabulary could possibly be combined with additional words which is another bulletproof approach. We hear you loud and clear about transcribing swearing. The Big Haired Lady spends a good deal of time training 4 letter words. -------------------------
