Several years ago there was a comparison matrix on this site listing the multitude of recorders that were viable with DN. Unfortuanately this matirx is no longer available. Does someone have a list of the main criteria to look for in buying a digital recorder for DNS10 & DNS11? When buying a recorder is it mandnatory that the unit have software specifically for downloading to DN, or do they all havetghe software?

We created a digital recorder comparison guide several years ago but it's too out of date to keep using and we really need to create a new one but we can tell you what to look for:
In our opinion, the best digital recorders feature the Olympus DS2 algorithms which are available in 1 consumer unit and 5 professional units. Because we are in the digital recorder market, every digital recorder we offer, utilizes the DS2 algorithms. In other words we only sell the best. There are 2 models from Grundig that meet our criteria, 1 from Philips and 3 from Olympus. Nuance has a number of digital recorders they recommend for use with NaturallySpeaking but we recommend taking their recommendations with a grain of salt because they typically recommend mediocre recorders that come bundled with NaturallySpeaking. Nearly every digital recorder, including all those that we sell, include linking software that works directly with NaturallySpeaking. We prefer the Olympus consumer and professional DSS Player software and rank the Philips SpeechExec Pro in 2nd place. We give 1st place ratings to the Grundig 703 and 704 (Bluetooth) recorders because they include the latest technology but what we dislike about the Grundig units is that NaturallySpeaking has to be turned off before you can transcribe a recording. Since we use NaturallySpeaking for everything, this tends to turn us off a bit. Note that even if your digital recorder doesn't include linking software, you can always directly transcribe recordings in a number digital formats including MP3, .wav, DSS and DS2. We believe that you can also transcribe proprietary Sony records but we have forgotten the extension for that option. Note that all digital recorders that feature the DS2 algorithms are equal from a speech recognition accuracy point of view. Recordings made on an Olympus DS-5000 will not transcribe better than Olympus DS-2400 recordings. You simply have more options on the DS-5000 such as slider control, rechargeable battery pack, cradle, cue/review and seamless punch in. -------------------------

We have an Olympus DS-2300. It has not performed well and so we are looking to purchase a new recorder (unless there is a way to train it for better accuracy). Does the DS-2300 use the DS2 algorhythm? We don't want to spend a lot of money, but want something that does perform well. What Olympus and which Philips recorders would you recommend? Thank you. Also, we were looking at the Sony SX712 and wondered if you have any thoughts on that one.

If you have an iPhone you really should try out Dragon's own app "dragon recorder" and if you need something better than that, plunk down $15 for "Dictamus" which will allow you to actually "insert" more dictation or even overwrite your recording.

Thanks very much for the reply. Unfortunately we had looked into the iphone app and from what we were told, it doesn't offer the ability to do any significant amount of dictation.

All digital recorders, that utilize DS2 algorithms, can be found under the previous hyperlink. The DS-2300 does not utilize DS2 algorithms. The Olympus DS-2400 is the world's only consumer grade recorder that utilizes DS2 algorithms which are designed specifically for dictation. That's why we only carry digital recorders that utilize DS2 logarithms. The DS-2400 works great with NaturallySpeaking but the advantage that professional recorders have is the seamless slider control, built-in rechargeable battery, USB charging cradle and most importantly the ability to glitchlessly punch into the middle of recording for quick edits, cue and review and various other dictation specific amenities.
The Philips 9600 features DS2 algorithms but it is considerably more expensive than the DS-2400. No other Philips recorders use DS2 out rhythms. All Sony recorders are consumer quality which isn’t necessarily an issue but none of them utilize DS2 algorithms. The Sony ICD-SX712 is really only designed to record stereo high fidelity music. It is not well-suited to monophonic speech recognition. That's not to say that it won't work with DNS but you may have to correct twice as many errors. -------------------------

Lunis, thank you so much for the reply. We really appreciate it and we're going to look into the recorders in your post. I'm really glad we didn't get the Sony as it looks like the DS2 algorhythm is the way to go to get good accuracy with DNS.
