I've been using Dragon Preferred 9 with Windows XP for several years and just got a new microphone. Do I need to do all the training all over or shouldn't I be able to just export my language patterns and custom vocabulary, etc. to the new microphone? I can't find it in the usual places I look, like the manual. Thanks.

Don't know if this is right, but I copied my user file for the old microphone and renamed them with the name of the new microphone and all I had to do was run the setup for the volume on the new microphone. Now it seems to be working just like the old microphone (only better).

JohnG, Provided that both microphones are of the same device type, such as USB, and both are about the same quality or sound characteristics, this is usually all you would have to do in order to proceed. Technically, it wasn't really necessary to rename the old profile, but it's always a good idea to name the profile to according to the device you are using them with. In addition to that, if you're still using version 9.1, you should minimally upgrade to version 9.5, which is free for you, or just as well directly upgrade to version 10.1, for which you would have to pay however. I'm sure you Lunis will provide you the links for both ways. Thanks Rüdiger, I looked into upgrading to version 9.5 but the site seems to indicate this is for Vista and my software tells me I'm running the latest version when I check for updates. I looked into upgrading to version 10 a while back, but the user reviews at Amazon were terrible and scared me away. I take it you like version 10? ------------------------- Naturally Speaking Preferred 9.10 Windows XP Professional |

JohnG, it looks like there are three things worth pointing out. 1. Even though the site says "Vista Support", you can run Ver. 9.5 as well on Windows XP, and I won't bother to list all the variations on that theme. 2. The update to Ver. 9.5 isn't considered via the built-in update search, which is why you are told that there are no updates available for you, while in fact you would be much better off using 9.5 over 9.1. 3. I wouldn't trust any Amazon reviews, not in my life, and most of all not as regards Dragon NaturallySpeaking. If you found this place, you are where the beef is. It's not just me who likes Ver. 10-10.1. In the not so distant future, Ver. 11 will be around. Basically, you are about two years behind, but such things happen if you don't mix with the team. Stick to it. Rüdiger

Our NaturallySpeaking 10 Review compares Ver. 9.5 to Ver. 10.0. We're now at Ver. 10.1 but the review is about 18 months old.

I just read Lunis' installation instructions for 10.1. He mentions uninstalling 9.5 before installing 10.1but then doesn't mention converting 9.5 user files and just describes how to set up a new user. Does this mean he thinks we should start over in 10.1 creating new users and throwing out our old user profiles or is this an ommission in his guide? Thanks.

On page 1 of Chapter 1 in KnowBrainer Installation/Training Guide, which we include a hard copy of for DNS upgrades, it specifically states to export your previous commands and vocabulary before uninstalling the previous version of DNS. Although we recommend creating a new user from scratch (to take full advantage of the newer algorithms), there's no reason to throw away your vocabulary or commands.

Point taken. Version 9.5 loaded and version 10.1 ordered. Thank you both for your help.
