I tried importing and exported (.top) vocabulary file from version 8 to my version 10 and got a error message that it was "invalid or incompatible".  Is it possible to import vocabularies from earlier versions into version 10?  Is there a workaround?  The PC that I exported version 8 vocabulary from is now dead.  Thanks.

Woody 999,

Unfortunately, exporting and importing vocabularies using the Manage Vocabularies option cannot be done across versions. Your vocabulary (top) from version 8 is not compatible with version 10. Vocabularies and their underlying code change from version to version and you simply cannot export from an earlier version and import into a new version.

The only way that you can even get close to that is to export your user profile and then import it into the new version. Even under that condition, it isn't recommended that you use a converted user profile because it tends to bring across all of the baggage and bugs in your user profile from the previous version. The only reason for importing and converting your user profile is so that you can access your custom commands and your custom words so that you can export them and then import them into a newly created version 10 user profile.

The long and the short of it is that version 8 vocabularies are not compatible with version 10.

If you still have access to DNS Pro 8 and your Ver. 8 user files, you can utilize the Words/Export menu to acquire your Ver. 8 vocabulary and reverse the process by using the Pro 10.1 Words/Import menu to import your Ver. 8 vocabulary into Ver. 10.

Note that our customers receive virtual on-site assistance and a hard copy of our pictorial step-by-step upgrade user guide which includes a step-by-step on importing your Ver. 8 vocabulary that doesn't include pronunciations but will allow you to import unique words, phrases and even supports the Vocabulary Editor’s Written Form/Spoken Form. You can download a PDF copy of our KnowBrainer Installation/Training Guide by clicking the previous link.
PS: Some Nuance-certified speech partners additionally give you an extra layer of technical support, a step-by-step upgrade/installation guide, a Neoprene Zippered Microphone Bag and a full copy of Pro 10.1 rather than a smart upgrade.
