Using DNS 9 Preferred. When "opening" or "saving as" a file in Dragon Pad a side bar is shown on the left. I am able to add my own selections to this sidebar in MS Word; is it possible to "customize" this sidebar in Dragon Pad?

The Nuance developers only intended DragonPad to be a down and dirty quick word processor with very limited functionality. DragonPad is basically a carbon copy of Microsoft WordPad without extended sidebar capabilities, a date function or even multiple undo capability. It was never intended to function as your main word processor and shouldn't be used for this purpose. If you have a real word processor, like Microsoft Word or WordPerfect, we recommend using it because this is what they are designed for. If you do not have a real word processor or simply prefer using a stripped-down word processor substitute WordPad for DragonPad. WordPad is a Windows accessory that is almost a carbon copy of DragonPad but with a few more amenities (including the ability to add items to the sidebar). Launching WordPad is as easy as launching DragonPad. Just say Start WordPad. However, another reason to avoid using DragonPad or even WordPad is that the default setting is Rich Text which is a very inefficient waste of space. A typical Microsoft Word document is about 10% of the size of a Rich Text document and when you try to open a Rich Text document it will open Microsoft Word anyway. Just food for thought...

Sorry, Lunis, but this is uncorrect. An empty Word document will use up as much as 11 kb hard drive space, at least on our system. I'd suggest you check this and report it, as I'm really interested. In my office, I've created all kinds of templates and scripts for my usual dictation using WordPad. Most of the times, when time is short, these documents only take up as much as 1 or 2 kb (1 page when printed). These files are saved as .rtf documents, of course. If you haven't changed the Windows default settings, they will be opened by WORD, which is not a good idea from the system, I suppose, since they were created by WordPad. I've noticed this time and again when talking to my coworkers in the office, most of them not really being interested in such details. But, from a puristic point of view, DragonPad is all a dragoneer can ask for, and anytime I'm just dictating right away, I'm using it! Rüdiger Wilke

We're not sure where we got that information from but we stand corrected and apologize for that boo boo.

Okay, well anyway, back to my original question since I can't customize the "Places Bar" in Word Pad either. I tried doing this with a registry edit, but it didn't work. Then I found a great link and download that allows you to do this. It can be done in common file dialog boxes in Windows as well as Microsoft Office applications. The download does work and it's a pleasure. You can always go back to the default settings if you'd like. |

We suspect you're using Windows XP and we didn't check Windows XP WordPad but it is easy to change the side bar settings in Vista WordPad. We're glad you found an alternative solution and thanks for sharing.
