Question From ScanSoft Forum

Quote:
Version: DNS V9.5 Pro (full version)

OS: Windows XP ProOffice Suite: Office XP Small Business

(80GB HD; 2MB RAM; 1.67GHZ processor)

I installed V 9.5 several months ago, and it seemed to be working fine for awhile, with the usual repairs here and there to keep it in shape. I got a virus and had to recover my OS. Before this, Dragon already would appear to launch, but then wouldn't load the files or initialize dictation--the toolbar disappeared after saying it was initializing, etc. If it did launch, the drop-down menus were different, too, e.g., it said "Close Dragon Bar" when it used to say "Exit Dragon.." Fewer options in the Help menu, etc. After recovery/clean slate it still won't launch and it doesn't show up in my processes as even running. I am wondering if it is some sort of software compatibility/windows issue, but I really am at a loss.

It sounds like you ran Windows System Restore which is well-known to destroy user files. Anytime you feel the need to run System Restore, you need to move your user files to a safe location such as a thumb drive. From the information you've given us, it sounds like your user files didn't load because they are corrupted and if this is the case, you'll need to switch to your backup user files. You'll find a step by step on this process when you look up “switching” (as in switching to backup user files) in our Quick Tips. If you would like to prevent this problem in the future you might consider permanently moving your files to a thumb drive which will also make them portable. You will find a step-by-step on this process when you look up “thumb” in the previously mentioned Quick Tips.

Hi Lunis,
Thank you for writing back and directing me to the right forum. I read the answer, but I'm not sure I explained the problem properly. Can you help clarify?

Unfortunately I was not able to move my user files before recovery because the program wouldn't launch and I couldn't export them. I don't think I have any back up user files, either. (Even more ufortunate.) I am trying to just start from scratch again.

I was able to create a new user/voice profile upon reinstall both prior to and after the recovery. But when I would double click on the application, it would start initializing everything, and then disappear. Again, this was pre and post recovery. So I am able to create a user and a voice profile, I just can't launch it and use the program in any meaningful way. If it opens at all it drags and deteriorates quickly.

I had read about deactivating the built-in speech in Office XP, or that there is some sort of process that runs in the background in Windows, some sort of .exe thing, which needs to be removed, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts?

Thanks so much!

Although normally this indicates that your user profile is corrupted, the bottom line is that DNS disappears because of an RPC_server unavailable error when executing DNS' ActiveX controls, which are what are known as COM programs.

In order to assist you with this problem, you need to post your Dragon log.  However, do not post it as Dragon.log.  If you post it in that format, no one will be able to open or read it.  When you open the Dragon log, save it as Dragon.txt.  It is a standard ASCII text file and if you store it as Dragon.txt and then post that file, we will be able to view it.  Based on what it contains, I can probably tell you what's happening and why.

Thanks for all your replies.

I think the problem appears to be resolved for the moment. Fingers crossed! I went ahead and changed/deactivated the features in Office XP and now it seems to be working just fine. I updated the registry to get rid of that ctfmon.exe thing as well. Thanks so much to everyone for all your help.

For my future reference, how do I find the log? Thanks.

My problems appear to be resolved, but I am having a heck of a time in IE; I can't execute any commands until the page has loaded, which seems to take ages, and then my computer freezes. But Mozilla is really lacking in terms of usability.

You might consider substituting Ace Explorer for Internet Explorer. You will still have Select-&-Say capability because it uses the Internet Explorer browser engine but it's like IE 7 lite.

We don't recommend trying the voice recognition software in Office XP because you probably won't be pleased with its functionality or accuracy. Chuck's recommendation to attach your user log as a text file sounds like the appropriate next move.

You may be refering to the CTFMON.EXE REMOVER which is recommended by both Chucker and KnowBrainer (Lunis).

Click the link and get the remover. It works great.

EDIT: this was just to answer your quote above and not to solve your larger more pressing isues of just getting things to work at all.
