I've been a user for some time, and I just lost my Naturally Speaking Preferred Ver 9 install disk. I only use Naturally Speaking occasionally since I have discovered I can't dictate grammatically correct sentences worth a damn. I mostly used it in the past for matters where I could read from one document and place the information in another program (i.e. populating databases, Excel, etc.) where I have had very good success.

My question: Do I buy Naturally Speaking Preferred Ver 9/9.5 (Preferred) now, or is version 10 just around the corner? I usually get a discount from Nuance for upgrades and I don't want to spend full price now, then have to update in a couple of months.  Any advice?

JRM,

First, if you have your serial number, and if you need help locating it on your system, we can help you find it, you can download the full install version (i.e., this is not an upgrade, it is a full version that does not require any previous version be installed) of DNS 9.5 Preferred by simply going to:

http://www.nuance.com/vista/

and follow the instructions.  This will solve your immediate problem and give you a full working version of DNS 9.5 Preferred.  This is a free update/upgrade to all registered users of DNS 9.  Only your serial number is required.  You will receive an e-mail notification and the location for downloading DNS 9.5 Preferred.  However, read the instructions carefully.

Second, don't wait for DNS 10.  It is not around the corner.  If very likely will not be released until the end of the year or beginning of 2009.  The earliest you will see DNS 10 is likely just before Christmas, but the most likely release date will be February of 2009.  If you hold your breath, you probably won't last long enough to see it.  ;-)

Nevertheless, forget about DNS 10.  It isn't even a glint in its mother's eye yet.

Lastly, DNS 10 is very likely going to up the ante on system requirements.  Therefore, if you're not running at least the Core2™ Duo 2.0 GHz or better with at least 3 GB of RAM, you are very likely not going to be able to take advantage of some of the new features projected for DNS 10.  Under these conditions, DNS 10 may not function any better on older systems then DNS 9.5 does currently.

Just continuing with Chuck's excellent advice...

If you still have an installation of NaturallySpeaking on any computer, even if it isn't working, there is a good chance that you can find your serial number. You'll find a step-by-step on locating your Ver. 9 serial number when you look up “serial” in our Quick Tips. If you are unable to locate your disk 1 of 2 CD or a computer with an installation of DNS on it, you're only recourse will be to contact Nuance Technical Support (407) 241-1822.
