Greetings KnowBrainers.

Today MS Word (still using Word 2007...) is completely unusable - Word documents open, but I cannot enter any text, or edit existing text in existing documents.

I reinsatlalled Word, but, surprisingly, to no avail.

I initially thought that it was because of adding DNS app to Word, but re-installing Word didn't remedy the problem. Strange.

I know that there have been verious problems reported of this sort, but unable to find a solution.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You mean not able to enter any text with the keyboard, or just unable to dictate text with Dragon?

You can try to disable the Dragon Add-in in MS Word Settings to see what happens. BTW it's very unsafe to use such an old Office version as it doesn't have any security updates anymore and you will be an easy prey for hackers.

I would consider getting a more recent office version like MS Office 2016 (a lot of interesting offers on the Internet for that version) which is very compatible with Dragon. On the other hand you may run into the Jumping Cursor problem, so it may also be a good idea to check out the free Apache Open Office which supports both .doc and .xml and has full Select-and-Say control.

Thanks dilligence. I agree. But I'll be using Libre Office Writer, rather than engaging with Microsoft's business model... (That is, I'm assuming that it's not possible to buy a legit version of Office 2016 or whatever. And also assuming that I can simply transfer documents from Dragon Pad to Libre Office.)

I mean not being able to type into an open/existing Word document. I can open existing documents, but all menus are greyed out.

I seem to remember another issue with Word 2007. Maybe it went in restricted mode somehow?

There should be a tab named "Developer" somewhere and then you should have an option to disable Document Protection.

When it comes to Libre Office, it's almost exactly the same as Apache Open Office but Libre doesn't support Select and Say while Apache does.

Dilligence,

We are running the latest version of OpenOffice Writer, which is 4.1.7 and we do not have Select-&-Say on either of our 2 test computers. Can you verify your version number under Help/About OpenOffice. We only have pseudo-Select-&-Say with the KnowBrainer commands

Apache OpenOffice 4.1.6 was Dragon compatible. 4.1.7 is not. I have no idea why. Jarte Word Processor is compatible. You just have to make two minor adjustments to make it work. It is been compatible for at least five years now. If you are interested in these, let me know.

I hope this helps.

I didn't know that, strange that this was changed (obviously I'm still running version 4.1.6).

I recommend Dragon users who don't want to use MS Office to download version Apache 4.1.6 while it's still downloadable.

Personally I think it works better with Dragon then MS Word.

George,

Since it seems like you have been using Jarte Plus for some time, can you tell us how you prevent the cursor from jumping into the middle of your previous dictation when dictating your 2nd phrase? Other than that, it appears to be very Dragon friendly

This is an oddity but it apparently has nothing to do with Dragon. Under the circumstances, you might have better luck on the Microsoft Office Forum

Word 2007 is not officially supported by DPI 15.3. You might have better luck with Word 2010, 2013 or 2016. Note that DPI 15.3 is not compatible with Word 2019.

You may only need to reenable the NatSpeak Word Addin. If you're unfamiliar with this process, you will find details when you search for “What to Do When You Lose Select-&-Say in Microsoft Word 2007” under the Quick Tips button at the top of this page. Don't forget that you will need to re-launch Microsoft Word before the change will take effect because Dragon must be launched before NatSpeak add-in dependent applications such as Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel. If you don't see the green • in the DragonBar, double check your Manage COM Add-ins to make certain that Microsoft Word is saving the NatSpeak add-in. If this doesn't work, you may need to open Microsoft Word via the Run as Administrator right click option.

Lunis, I can understand DNS not being compatible with Word 2007, and that that would mean that it might cause problems with DNS, but would you expect that incompatibility to render Word unusable, even without DNS being open? (I should hasten to add that I'm only using DNS for transcription purposes; nothing else.)

Hi Lunis,

I have never had that happen. I have used Jarte Plus, Microsoft Word 2010, Apache OpenOffice and Atlantis d Processor. I don't even know what the jumping cursor looks like. Sorry I couldn't help with more. A long time ago, I corresponded with both Lindsay Adam and Bob Flora of Jarte. Out of those discussions came the simple changes which need to make Jarte Dragon friendly.

Are these the two tweaks?

"Close Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
Find a file named C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking12\nsapps.ini in your Dragon NaturallySpeaking installation folder and edit it (change the "12" to match the version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking you are using).
Find section [.Global\Global Enable Class Names] in the file.
Add the following line to the end of that section: RichEdit20=4
Save the the change and close the file.
In Jarte, go to Help > System Information > Edit Settings
Find setting "Class Name" and change it to: Class Name=RichEdit20
Restart both Dragon NaturallySpeaking and Jarte."

Edit:  Seems to solve the jumping cursor issue and enables select and say.
